  19.    THE INCREDIBLE MUSICAL KEYBOARD

  22.   With the power of the MUSIC
  23.  
  24. PROCESSOR, you can choose from 99
  25.  
  26. preset instrument definitions.  With
  27.  
  28. the INCREDIBLE KEYBOARD, which sits
  29.  
  30. atop your C-64, you can play just like
  31.  
  32. a piano.
  33.  
  34.   One of the strongest attributes of
  35.  
  36. this system is the editing facility.
  37.  
  38. When you play off of the keyboard
  39.  
  40. (the C-64 or the INCREDIBLE KEYBOARD),
  41.  
  42. the MUSIC PROCESSOR creates a program-
  43.  
  44. like coding of what you play.  When
  45.  
  46. in the editing mode, you can use the
  47.  
  48. built-in screen editing power of your
  49.  
  50. C-64.  For example, you can use the
  51.  
  52. cursor keys to move up to any line you
  53.  
  54. wish to change.  If you want to delete
  55.  
  56. a line, just type in the line number
  57.  
  58. and press <return>.  When in the
  59.  
  60. editing mode, you can 'place' lyrics
  61.  
  62. into your song.  What this does is
  63.  
  64. display the words to the song at the
  65.  
  66. appropriate time.  You can also
  67.  
  68. highlight the current lyrics.  This
  69.  
  70. produces a type of 'bouncing ball'
  71.  
  72. effect!  As I said, the power of this
  73.  
  74. system really lies in the editing
  75.  
  76. features which include AUTO line
  77.  
  78. numbering, DIRectory, DISk access,
  79.  
  80. Fast forward, Insert, Jukebox, MERge,
  81.  
  82. RECord, REnumber, Instrument, Save,
  83.  
  84. Load, etc...   All in all, there are
  85.  
  86. more than 50 commands which can be
  87.  
  88. accessed from within EDIT mode.
  89.  
  90.   The sound produced by this system
  91.  
  92. is excellent.  The documentation is
  93.  
  94. very good.  All concepts are explained
  95.  
  96. thoroughly and an example of how to
  97.  
  98. use the technique is given almost
  99.  
  100. every time.  As a bonus, more than 12
  101.  
  102. pages of the handbook are dedicated to
  103.  
  104. explaining some of the SID chip's
  105.  
  106. capabilities such as ADSR, SYNC, and
  107.  
  108. RING MOD.
  109.  
  110.   As with all systems which use a
  111.  
  112. keyboard, one problem is that you need
  113.  
  114. to know how to play a piano and read
  115.  
  116. sheet music to tap into all of the
  117.  
  118. MUSIC PROCESSOR'S capabilities.  But,
  119.  
  120. with this system, all 'boo-boos' can
  121.  
  122. be easily corrected using the EDIT
  123.  
  124. feature.

  126.  
  127.  The KAWASAKI SYNTHESIZER is just what
  128.  
  129. the name implies, a synthesizer
  130.  
  131. developed by the great Ryo Kawasaki.
  132.  
  133. This package contains two disks --
  134.  
  135. THE PERFORMER and THE COMPOSER.
  136.  
  137. THE PERFORMER allows you to play
  138.  
  139. around with the extraordinary
  140.  
  141. capabilities of the C-64.  You can
  142.  
  143. choose from over 10 preset
  144.  
  145. instrument definitions including
  146.  
  147. harpsichord, mystery, waves, piano,
  148.  
  149. outer-space, and explosion.  All of
  150.  
  151. the instrument definitions really
  152.  
  153. sound like the real thing.  Using a
  154.  
  155. keyboard (C-64 or INCREDIBLE KEYBOARD)
  156.  
  157. you can create a virtual galaxy of
  158.  
  159. sounds.  The possibilities are only
  160.  
  161. limited by your imagination.
  162.  
  163.   THE COMPOSER actually allows you to
  164.  
  165. record what you play.  You can play
  166.  
  167. with over 20 different settings.
  168.  
  169. For example, you can choose any
  170.  
  171. combination of ADSR, pulse width,
  172.  
  173. resonance, octave, 'wah-wah', vibrato,
  174.  
  175. and all filter settings.  You can SAVE
  176.  
  177. and LOAD your compositions to disk for
  178.  
  179. later use.
  180.  
  181.   To actually compose a song, you
  182.  
  183. usually 'lay-down' your song one track
  184.  
  185. at a time.  What you play off of the
  186.  
  187. keyboard is encoded in a form that the
  188.  
  189. SYNTHESIZER understands.  The notes
  190.  
  191. are represented by 255 'dots' across
  192.  
  193. the screen.  As you press a key, the
  194.  
  195. next dot changes to that note.  Sharps
  196.  
  197. and flats are represented in reverse
  198.  
  199. video.  With this system, editing is
  200.  
  201. very easy.  You just use the cursor
  202.  
  203. keys to go to the note you want to
  204.  
  205. change and change it!
  206.  
  207.   The documentation is very good.
  208.  
  209. The concept used is very interesting.
  210.  
  211. Ryo Kawasaki presents everything in
  212.  
  213. a type of 'space travel' theme.  He
  214.  
  215. speaks of entering 'a most magical
  216.  
  217. place.  From this place, you are
  218.  
  219. transported to other domains of
  220.  
  221. sensory delights.'  Overall, the
  222.  
  223. documentation is very complete in
  224.  
  225. explaining some of the intricate parts
  226.  
  227. of his systems.
  228.  
  229.  
  230.   3001 SOUND ODYSSEY is a complete
  231.  
  232. musical system itself.  It is also
  233.  
  234. a wonderfully thought-out tutorial on
  235.  
  236. the capabilities of the SID chip.
  237.  
  238. You can choose from 'SHOW ME' and
  239.  
  240. 'TRY ME' modes in each lesson.  The
  241.  
  242. capabilities of the SID chip are
  243.  
  244. explained in easy to understand
  245.  
  246. terms and the graphics which are used
  247.  
  248. help reinforce the concept.  This
  249.  
  250. type of tutorial makes learning about
  251.  
  252. music synthesis fun.  For example,
  253.  
  254. in your adventure you meet such
  255.  
  256. people as 'Point Dexter' and 'Micro
  257.  
  258. Jaxxon'.
  259.  
  260.   The actual music creation system is
  261.  
  262. called MICROSYNTH.  When composing
  263.  
  264. a song, you are presented with a
  265.  
  266. screen which is literally filled with
  267.  
  268. options.  You can change such things
  269.  
  270. as filters, waveforms, ADSR, presets,
  271.  
  272. SYNC, RING MOD, etc...  One great
  273.  
  274. thing about this 'on-screen editing'
  275.  
  276. is that you can hear the changes as
  277.  
  278. they are being made.  For example,
  279.  
  280. when sliding the filter cutoff slowly
  281.  
  282. up, you can instantly hear the effect.
  283.  
  284.   The sound produced with MICROSYNTH
  285.  
  286. is very good.  Another plus is that
  287.  
  288. you can acutally 'see' what your
  289.  
  290. computer is playing.  With the options
  291.  
  292. screen displayed when you play back
  293.  
  294. your songs, all the controls change
  295.  
  296. to indicate what your music is doing.
  297.  
  298. By watching these controls, you can
  299.  
  300. tell where you might want to change
  301.  
  302. something.
