  6.  MUSICALC is a bit intimidating to the
  7.  
  8. first-time user, but with experience,
  9.  
  10. all of the fear disappears.  The
  11.  
  12. overall sound created with MUSICALC
  13.  
  14. is very good.  You can choose from
  15.  
  16. 32 preset sounds and 32 preset scores,
  17.  
  18. or create and save your own.
  19.  
  20. Various functions of the SID chip are
  21.  
  22. controlled via sliders or switches.
  23.  
  24. At first, all of these are a bit
  25.  
  26. confusing, but the documentation,
  27.  
  28. which is excellent, dispels all
  29.  
  30. confusion.  When dealing with the
  31.  
  32. sliders and/or switches, you can hear
  33.  
  34. instantly what the effect is. You
  35.  
  36. control all functions from the
  37.  
  38. keyboard.  You can also choose a
  39.  
  40. 'keyboard mode' which allows you to
  41.  
  42. play your keyboard as a piano.  One
  43.  
  44. drawback of this is that you can only
  45.  
  46. have one voice playing at a time.
  47.  
  48. The keyboard defaults to a major
  49.  
  50. scale, but can be reprogrammed for
  51.  
  52. other types of scales.  As you play
  53.  
  54. the keyboard, you can select a voice
  55.  
  56. to 'record.'  This will allow you to
  57.  
  58. play-back what you have just played.
  59.  
  60. With MUSICALC, you are able to SAVE
  61.  
  62. your own songs and LOAD them back in
  63.  
  64. later for editing.
  65.  
  66.   MUSICALC also has a 'score screen
  67.  
  68. mode.'  In this mode, you can input
  69.  
  70. notes via the cursor and function
  71.  
  72. keys.  You have to input both note
  73.  
  74. (C,C#,E,etc...) and octave (0,1,2..).
  75.  
  76. This type of entering is considered
  77.  
  78. a sequencer.  This method is a bit
  79.  
  80. slow and tedious in entering, but
  81.  
  82. makes editing a breeze.  One drawback
  83.  
  84. is that if you want to enter some
  85.  
  86. sheet music, you have to be able to
  87.  
  88. read music to transpose your sheet
  89.  
  90. music onto the screen.  You also have
  91.  
  92. to have an understanding of how
  93.  
  94. octaves are arranged on the C-64 to be
  95.  
  96. able to to choose the correct one. 
  97.  
  98. But, as I have said, editing is a
  99.  
  100. breeze.  If you make a mistake, don't
  101.  
  102. worry.  By the way, MUSICALC does
  103.  
  104. allow ties and they are very easy to
  105.  
  106. place in your music. MUSICALC also
  107.  
  108. allows you to play any combination of
  109.  
  110. the C-64's three voices at once.
  111.  
  112.   The documentation is very, very,
  113.  
  114. well written.  Everything is presented
  115.  
  116. in an easy to understand format.  In
  117.  
  118. addition, almost half of the 72 page
  119.  
  120. manual is dedicated to defining terms
  121.  
  122. and features used in MUSICALC.
