- STUDIO-64 REVIEW
-
-
-
-
- STUDIO-64 is a totally keyboard
-
- oriented musical system. All musical
-
- coding is done via the C-64's own
-
- keyboard; no external musical
-
- keyboards are necessary for this
-
- system. The middle two rows of keys
-
- (A-equal and W-up arrow) are used
-
- for entering musical notes. At the
-
- top of the screen is an indicator
-
- which shows what waveform you are
-
- presently using. Using the function
-
- keys, you can switch between any of
-
- the four basic waveforms.
-
- You can enter music in two different
-
- ways. The first way is by entering
-
- the notes one at a time. When you
-
- press a musical key using this method,
-
- a sixteenth note appears upon the
-
- staff. Pressing the key once more
-
- changes the note to an eighth note.
-
- Another keypress on the same key will
-
- lengthen the note again. Tied notes
-
- are easy to use as well. Rests are
-
- treated in the same way. By pressing
-
- the space bar repeatedly, the rest
-
- grows in duration. The other method
-
- of entering your music is to play it
-
- in 'real time'. In this mode,
-
- STUDIO-64 updates the duration of a
-
- note simply if you hold the key down.
-
- In this mode, there is no need to
-
- press a key more than once.
-
- Waveforms and octaves can be changed
-
- for every note. You can change from
-
- one waveform to another by using the
-
- function keys. You can change the
-
- octave you are playing in by pressing
-
- the number keys 1 through 8. ADSR
-
- can be set to any desired settings for
-
- each note. Again, the function keys
-
- are used to change the settings.
-
- STUDIO-64 can also make use of the
-
- C-64's filters. Each voice can be
-
- filtered and you can select which
-
- type of filter to use (band, high, or
-
- low pass). You can also adjust the
-
- cutoff frequency very easily.
-
- Resonance is also very easily altered.
-
- As an added feature, you can adjust
-
- the pitch so that you can tune your
-
- C-64 to a tuning fork or other tuning
-
- device. The tempo of playback is
-
- also very easy to alter.
-
- Editing a song is very easy with
-
- STUDIO-64. You can delete and insert
-
- notes very easily. You can also
-
- duplicate portions of your music.
-
- The commands used in STUDIO-64 are
-
- very easy to understand and remember.
-
- For example, to alter the filter
-
- settings, simply press CTRL-F. To
-
- alter ADSR, press CTRL-A. STUDIO-64
-
- includes a HELP key. It calls up a
-
- reference screen.
-
- The documentation for STUDIO-64 is
-
- good. All concepts are explained
-
- fully and an example is almost always
-
- given. The instruction booklet also
-
- contains approximately five pages
-
- of tips and information on how to code
-
- music.
