-
- PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
-
- THE ZIP TERMINUS(c) is a SHELL utility for PKZIP V1.1x
- and it's associated files. THE ZIP TERMINUS(c) features easy
- flat archive menu driven compression and extraction routines.
- It's ideal for the everyday user who is interested in 'getting
- the job done'. However, TERMINUS does accept custom parameters
- and allows for user tailoring of most operations.
-
- TERMINUS uses an easy system of flexible defaults which are
- auto-configured when the program is first run to help speed up program
- installation. A path pick list is used to store frequently selected
- paths and provide the user with quick selection of source and target
- directories.
-
- ZIP TERMINUS was designed to run from a hard disk but will
- work satisfactorily if installed on a high capacity floppy. It
- caters to the low-end of the video standard spectrum by
- offering compatibility with IBM MDA monochrome, IBM CGA Color
- and those systems that utilize the IBM CGA standard but employ
- a money saving green, amber or white monochrome display device.
- TERMINUS may be worked from the keyboard or by a Microsoft
- compatibile mouse.
-
- Hands-free toggled virus detection is provided for both
- compress and extraction operations. McAfee's VIRUSCAN program
- is called up to scan all files extracted and those files
- which have been tagged for compression.
-
- This version of The ZIP TERMINUS features full submenu SUPPORT
- for McAfee Associates' virus detector program SCAN.EXE . Virus scans
- of entire subdirectories and/or logical drives are now provided for
- user convenience.
-
- ALL virus scan functions now include increased visual / audible
- alarms which are issued upon virus detection. Password entry is
- needed to proceed from the alarm point. Options are given to allow
- continued program operation or immediate program halt after correct
- entry of the password.
-
- This program does not attempt to incorporate every possible
- archive option offered by PKZIP. Instead, it offers a modest selection
- of menu powered options that can be used with ease in today's computer
- and telecommunication environments which demand user competence in
- the areas of file compression, extraction and computer virus infection
- prevention.
-
- THE ZIP TERMINUS(c) is simple, easy to use, it gets the job done!
-

- same (* see note *) floppy for quick start and access to ALL TERMINUS
- functions.
-
- PKZIP(tm) files needed are : PKZIP.EXE; PKUNZIP.EXE;
- ZIP2EXE.EXE;
-
- McAfee VIRUSCAN files needed: SCAN.EXE
-
- ZIP TERMINUS files needed : ZT61B.EXE; ZTCF1.EXE;
- ZTCF2.EXE;
-
- MS/PC DOS files required : COMMAND.COM (floppy installation)
-
-
-
-
- *****************************************************************
-
- ** FLOPPY START:
-
- NOTE: Copy ZT61A.EXE, ZTCF1.EXE, ZTCF2.EXE, PKZIP.EXE, PKUNZIP.EXE
- SCAN.EXE and COMMAND.COM to your floppy disk. DO NOT
- PLACE these files into a subdirectory. PUT them into
- the ROOT directory of your work floppy.(You MUST
- copy COMMAND.COM to the floppy!)
-
-
- Start THE ZIP TERMINUS by typing each line followed by <ENTER>:
-
- A: B:
- cd\ or cd\
- ZT61B.EXE ZT61B.EXE
-
- Press F5- CHANGE DEFAULTS at the MAIN menu
- and define the location of all needed programs
- and further define operating parameters where
- necessary.
-
-
- ** HARD DISK START:
-
- Assuming you have placed the required files on DRIVE #C in a
- subdirectory named terminus you may start TERMINUS by typing
- each line followed by <ENTER>
-
- c:
- cd\terminus
- ZT61B.EXE
-
- Change the line C: to D: or whatever the drive letter designation
- you installed TERMINUS on. Change the line cd\terminus to
- cd\whatever where 'whatever' is the subdirectory you placed the
- TERMINUS programs.
-
- Press F5- CHANGE DEFAULTS at the MAIN menu
- and define the location of all needed programs
- and further define operating parameters where
- necessary.
-
-
- ** NOTE #1:
-
- Floppy installation requires that you MUST place COMMAND.COM
- in the TERMINUS disk ROOT directory. It also requires that you
- put all needed files in the ROOT directory. Systems with 720K,
- 1.4MEG, or 1.2MEG drives will be able to place all of the
- above files on one disk. This version of The Zip Terminus will
- also function on a 360Kb floppy.
-
-
-
- ** NOTE #2
-
- You MUST start zt61B.exe from the directory where it is
- located at. You must switch the active subdirectory
- and drive to the TERMINUS files location before running
- zt61B.exe so that your previously saved CFG file can be
- loaded in. TERMINUS assumes that the CFG file is in the
- startup directory and drive.
-
- Please take the time to read the INSTALLATION procedures found
- in ZT61B.DOC . The TERMINUS is error trapped for MISSING program
- files(ZIP2EXE.EXE, SCAN.EXE, etc.) and will refuse to perform functions
- associated with the required files if they don't exist in the DEFAULT
- specified subdirectories. REMEMBER: TERMINUS is not a stand alone
- utility, it is a SHELL for PKZIP and VIRUSCAN.
-
- The first time you run ZT61B.EXE make sure you go no further
- than the MAIN MENU before you press F5 and make the needed additions
- or corrections to the DEFAULT TABLE.
-
- *****
- IF you have IBM CGA C80 mode compatibility(you can run programs
- which require color 80 column text IBM CGA mode) but utilize a money
- saving green, amber, white etc. monochrome display, start TERMINUS
- like this:
-
- A> ZT61B.EXE M (press return)
-
- This will eliminate window background colors and adjust certain other
- textcolors so you may be able to SEE all menu selects, prompts, etc.
- The mouse will still function if you have one. NOTE: TRUE IBM MDA
- monochrome display cards are auto-detected and there is no need for
- the extra parameter when starting TERMINUS.
-
- *****
-
- If you have an older cga adapter and experience "snow" during
- screen updates you may invoke the /S command line parameter:
-
-
- A> ZT61B.EXE S (press return)
-
- The /S and /M commmands may be combined. Don't put a space between
- the two characters:
-
-
- A> ZT61B.EXE MS (press return)
-
- *****
-
- Version 6.1B has TWO HELP keys, F10 which is displayed
- in the lower function menu bar and F1. Each key produces the same
- result.
-
-
- ***** RECENT PROGRAM CHANGES
-
- v6.0 1. Increased visual and audible signals were added to the
- virus detection functions. Password entry is required to
- continue pass the point of alarm. Options are then given
- for continued program operation or immediate program halt.
- Read ZT61B.DOC for more information.
-
- 2. ZIPfile list capacity etc. increased to 512 files. Larger
- file count capacity procedures outlined in DOCS & HELP
-
- 3. Instant upgrade/update procedure for REGISTERED users
- added.
-
- 4. Insufficient RAM memory check/warning added to opening
- program sequence.
-
- 5. Selected submenu function operations simplified for ease of
- operation.
-
- 6. Save Defaults? prompt now activates every time when leaving
- the default submenu. Previously the prompt was issued only
- when a change was made to the existing default values.
-
- 7. Directory display for file selection now shows file size -
- date/time - attributes of individual files, total bytes
- selected, and total bytes free on target disk.
-
- 8. Command line options expanded. Previously checksnow was set
- to true and now is offered as an option.
-
- 9. Code added to force disable memory checks during virus
- AUTOSCAN in compress and extract submenu. Also, the /A SCAN
- option is forced on for ALL virus scan functions, both
- manual and autoscan. /A is no longer a user option.
-
- v6.1A 1. Registered user support increased to include an online BBS.
- Telephone 908-206-1386 6PM to 6AM EST 7 days a week. A
- variety of different Shareware files as well as the most
- recent updates for The ZIP Terminus are available. Voice
- support available 9AM to 5PM EST Mon. - Fri. 908-206-1386
-
- 2. All Zip Terminus EXE files are now distributed in
- compressed executable form. Users should be able to
- satisfactorily run the Zip Terminus from a 360Kb floppy.
- COMMAND.COM must be placed on the TERMINUS disk. The ZIP
- TERMINUS checks for the location of COMMAND.COM by the
- drive spec for the location of TERMINUS files in the
- default table - entry #1 - when running from a floppy.
- Operation from floppy drive #A or #B is allowed. DO NOT
- WRITE PROTECT your floppy. Doing so will eliminate the
- ability of the ZIP Terminus to use list files and tag
- within archives for the purpose of selective extracts.
- However, *.* compress and extracts will still work. HARD
- DISK installation is preferred.
-
-
-
-
- 3. Changed the MEMORY AVAILABLE message displayed when a user presses
- <CTRL-F> at any menu/submenu to read "LARGEST CONTIGUOUS RAM BLOCK
- AVAILABLE" . The figure displayed is only a guide to help users
- determine if their shell or other utility will have enough space
- to operate. It does not necessarily refer to the total conventional
- memory(i.e. 640Kb, 512Kb, etc.) minus the sum of memory all programs
- you are running actually occupy. The number of KB FREE refers to the
- largest contiguous or adjacent set of RAM locations available and
- therefore in a general sense also refers to the size of the largest
- executable program that may be launched from the ZIP Terminus.
- (code, data, etc.) Read ZT61B.DOC for more information.
-
- 4. Added further error traps for program Floppy operations and
- installation.
-
- 5. Renamed the main program file from ZTEC61A.EXE to ZT61A.EXE
- Also renamed ZTECHELP.EXE and ZTECDPF.EXE to ZTCF1.EXE and
- ZTCF2.EXE respectively.
-
- 6. Support for PKZIPFIX.EXE and the Authenticate/Verify
- compress option of PKZIP.EXE has been dropped.
-
- 7. Virus scan of of files before compress and after extract was
- changed to ENTIRE subdirectory/disk rather than individual
- files. This change provides a faster virus check for floppy
- users. Hard disk users will also note the improved
- performance.
-
- ZTEC61B
-
- 1. /A /M /CHKHI options now forced ON for all virus scan
- functions. (Check ALL file extension types, check memory
- for ALL resident type virus innfections, check to
- 1024Kb (1088) on machines so expanded.) Previously the
- /M and /CHKHI were user options implemented by default
- table entry.
-
- Users should make every effort to use only the most recent
- version of McAfee Associates SCAN.EXE .
-
- 2. Changed message "This program needs TERMINUS" to "ACCESS
- DENIED! Please run ZT61B.EXE" . This string is displayed
- when ZTCF1.EXE and/or ZTCF2.EXE are run from the command
- line and not from within the main program ZT61B.EXE .
-
- 3. The PRINTDOC.BAT was changed to print ZT61B.DOC * AND *
- README.1ST files.
-
- 4. Added start-up error message for "COMMAND.COM Not Found".
- Floppy installation requires that the user place a copy
- of COMMAND.COM on the Terminus disk. Terminus assumes you
- are using floppy installation if the first two characters
- of default table entry #1 are either "A:" or "B:" and will
- look ONLY in the floppy ROOT directory for COMMAND.COM if
-
-
-
-
- COMSPEC fails to reveal the location of COMMAND.COM .
- In the event that COMSPEC returns null (and you are using a
- hard disk installation) because no PATH statement was used
- in your AUTOEXEC.BAT (or SHELL statement in CONFIG.SYS) etc.
- it will assume COMMAND.COM is in the C: ROOT directory.
-
- COMMAND.COM is necessary to insure FULL access to certain
- ZIP TERMINUS program functions.
-
- 5. Corrections and additions were made to the program
- documentation files.
-
- DO NOT use the ZIP Terminus virus scan functions in any
- environment or on any machine where another virus disinfector utility
- is or has been run. This includes but is not limited to TSR virus
- utilities. No claim is made herein or otherwise as to compatibility
- with other author/program virus disinfector & detector utilities.
-
- ***** NOTE: The ZIP Terminus virus scan functions SHOULD NOT be
- used with any other virus detection or disinfection software.
- Certain other anit-virus programs do not utilize encrypted
- search strings and other advanced techniques which may cause
- false alarms either with Terminus or during their own operation.
- This warning extends but is not limited to TSR type detectors.
- Use The ZIP Terminus in concert with the McAfee Associates
- anti-virus programs ONLY for best results.(Read VT40B.DOC)
-
- The use of non-encrypted search strings is in direct contrast
- to current accepted industry standards and suggested CVIA
- guidelines. (Computer Virus Industry Association)
