  12.          PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
  13.  
  14.               THE ZIP TERMINUS(c) is a SHELL utility for PKZIP V1.1x
  15.          and it's associated files. THE ZIP TERMINUS(c) features easy
  16.          flat archive menu driven compression and extraction routines.
  17.          It's ideal for the everyday user who is interested in 'getting
  18.          the job done'. However, TERMINUS does accept custom parameters
  19.          and allows for user tailoring of most operations.
  20.  
  21.               TERMINUS uses an easy system of flexible defaults which are
  22.          auto-configured when the program is first run to help speed up program
  23.          installation. A path pick list is used to store frequently selected
  24.          paths and provide the user with quick selection of source and target
  25.          directories.

  27.               ZIP TERMINUS was designed to run from a hard disk but will
  28.          work satisfactorily if installed on a high capacity floppy. It
  29.          caters to the low-end of the video standard spectrum  by
  30.          offering compatibility with IBM MDA monochrome, IBM CGA Color
  31.          and those systems that utilize the IBM CGA standard but employ
  32.          a money saving green, amber or white monochrome display device.
  33.          TERMINUS may be worked from the keyboard or by a Microsoft
  34.          compatibile mouse.
  35.  
  36.               Hands-free toggled virus detection is provided for both
  37.          compress and extraction operations. McAfee's VIRUSCAN program
  38.          is called up to scan all files extracted and those files
  39.          which have been tagged for compression.
  40.  
  41.               This version of The ZIP TERMINUS features full submenu SUPPORT
  42.          for McAfee Associates' virus detector program SCAN.EXE . Virus scans
  43.          of entire subdirectories and/or logical drives are now provided for
  44.          user convenience.

  46.               ALL virus scan functions now include increased visual / audible
  47.          alarms which are issued upon virus detection. Password entry is
  48.          needed to proceed from the alarm point. Options are given to allow
  49.          continued program operation or immediate program halt after correct
  50.          entry of the password.

  52.               This program does not attempt to incorporate every possible
  53.          archive option offered by PKZIP. Instead, it offers a modest selection
  54.          of menu powered options that can be used with ease in today's computer
  55.          and telecommunication environments which demand user competence in
  56.          the areas of file compression, extraction and computer virus infection
  57.          prevention.

  84.          The ZIP TERMINUS(c) is a SHELL and needs the following programs
  85.          for FULL access to ALL functions:

  89.              VIRUSCAN(tm) v85, v86 or higher by McAfee Associates (see note)

  92.          Make sure you have the following files from each(* see below *) of the
  93.          above in the same subdirectory for hard disk installation or on the
  94.          same (* see note *) floppy for quick start and access to ALL TERMINUS
  95.          functions.

  97.               PKZIP(tm) files needed are  : PKZIP.EXE; PKUNZIP.EXE;

  112.             **  FLOPPY START:
  113.  
  114.             NOTE: Copy ZT61A.EXE, ZTCF1.EXE, ZTCF2.EXE, PKZIP.EXE, PKUNZIP.EXE
  115.                        SCAN.EXE and COMMAND.COM to your floppy disk. DO NOT
  116.                        PLACE these files into a subdirectory. PUT them into
  117.                        the ROOT directory of your work floppy.(You MUST
  118.                        copy COMMAND.COM to the floppy!)

  121.             Start THE ZIP TERMINUS by typing each line followed by <ENTER>:

  135.             Assuming you have placed the required files on DRIVE #C in a
  136.             subdirectory named terminus you may start TERMINUS by typing
  137.             each line followed by <ENTER>

  141.                                   ZT61B.EXE

  143.             Change the line C: to D: or whatever the drive letter designation
  144.             you installed TERMINUS on. Change the line cd\terminus to
  145.             cd\whatever where 'whatever' is the subdirectory you placed the
  146.             TERMINUS programs.
  147.  
  148.                        Press F5- CHANGE DEFAULTS at the MAIN menu
  149.                        and define the location of all needed programs
  150.                        and further define operating parameters where
  151.                        necessary.

  154.          ** NOTE #1:
  155.  
  156.          Floppy installation requires that you MUST place COMMAND.COM
  157.          in the TERMINUS disk ROOT directory. It also requires that you
  158.          put all needed files in the ROOT directory. Systems with 720K,
  159.          1.4MEG, or 1.2MEG drives will be able to place all of the
  160.          above files on one disk. This version of The Zip Terminus will
  161.          also function on a 360Kb floppy.

  165.          ** NOTE #2
  166.  
  167.                You MUST start zt61B.exe from the directory where it is
  168.                located at. You must switch the active subdirectory
  169.                and drive to the TERMINUS files location before running
  170.                zt61B.exe so that your previously saved CFG file can be
  171.                loaded in. TERMINUS assumes that the CFG file is in the
  172.                startup directory and drive.
  173.  
  174.               Please take the time to read the INSTALLATION procedures found
  175.         in ZT61B.DOC . The TERMINUS is error trapped for MISSING program
  176.         files(ZIP2EXE.EXE, SCAN.EXE, etc.) and will refuse to perform functions
  177.         associated with the required files if they don't exist in the DEFAULT
  178.         specified subdirectories. REMEMBER: TERMINUS is not a stand alone
  179.         utility, it is a SHELL for PKZIP and VIRUSCAN.
  180.  
  181.               The first time you run ZT61B.EXE make sure you go no further
  182.          than the MAIN MENU before you press F5 and make the needed additions
  183.          or corrections to the DEFAULT TABLE.

  186.               IF you have IBM CGA C80 mode compatibility(you can run programs
  187.          which require color 80 column text IBM CGA mode) but utilize a money
  188.          saving green, amber, white etc. monochrome display, start TERMINUS
  189.          like this:

  193.          This will eliminate window background colors and adjust certain other
  194.          textcolors so you may be able to SEE all menu selects, prompts, etc.
  195.          The mouse will still function if you have one. NOTE: TRUE IBM MDA
  196.          monochrome display cards are auto-detected and there is no need for
  197.          the extra parameter when starting TERMINUS.

  201.               If you have an older cga adapter and experience "snow" during
  202.          screen updates you may invoke the /S command line parameter:

  207.          The /S and /M commmands may be combined. Don't put a space between
  208.          the two characters:

  215.               Version 6.1B has TWO HELP keys, F10 which is displayed
  216.          in the lower function menu bar and F1. Each key produces the same
  217.          result.

  222.          v6.0   1. Increased visual and audible signals were added to the
  223.                    virus detection functions. Password entry is required to

  252.                    AUTOSCAN in compress and extract submenu. Also, the /A SCAN
  253.                    option is forced on for ALL virus scan functions, both
  254.                    manual and autoscan. /A is no longer a user option.

  262.                 2. All Zip Terminus EXE files are now distributed in
  263.                    compressed executable form. Users should be able to
  264.                    satisfactorily run the Zip Terminus from a 360Kb floppy.
  265.                    COMMAND.COM must be placed on the TERMINUS disk. The ZIP
  266.                    TERMINUS checks for the location of COMMAND.COM by the
  267.                    drive spec for the location of TERMINUS files in the
  268.                    default table - entry #1 - when running from a floppy.
  269.                    Operation from floppy drive #A or #B is allowed. DO NOT
  270.                    WRITE PROTECT your floppy. Doing so will eliminate the
  271.                    ability of the ZIP Terminus to use list files and tag
  272.                    within archives for the purpose of selective extracts.
  273.                    However, *.* compress and extracts will still work. HARD
  274.                    DISK installation is preferred.

  279.      3. Changed the MEMORY AVAILABLE message displayed when a user presses
  280.         <CTRL-F> at any menu/submenu to read "LARGEST CONTIGUOUS RAM BLOCK
  281.         AVAILABLE" .  The figure displayed is only a guide to help users
  282.         determine if their shell or other utility will have enough space
  283.         to operate. It does not necessarily refer to the total conventional
  284.         memory(i.e. 640Kb, 512Kb, etc.) minus the sum of memory all programs
  285.         you are running actually occupy. The number of KB FREE refers to the
  286.         largest contiguous or adjacent set of RAM locations available and
  287.         therefore in a general sense also refers to the size of the largest
  288.         executable program that may be launched from the ZIP Terminus.

  291.                 4. Added further error traps for program Floppy operations and
  292.                    installation.
  293.  
  294.                 5. Renamed the main program file from ZTEC61A.EXE to ZT61A.EXE
  295.                    Also renamed ZTECHELP.EXE and ZTECDPF.EXE to ZTCF1.EXE and
  296.                    ZTCF2.EXE respectively.

  298.                 6. Support for PKZIPFIX.EXE and the Authenticate/Verify
  299.                    compress option of PKZIP.EXE has been dropped.

  301.                 7. Virus scan of of files before compress and after extract was
  302.                    changed to ENTIRE subdirectory/disk rather than individual
  303.                    files. This change provides a faster virus check for floppy
  304.                    users. Hard disk users will also note the improved
  305.                    performance.

  309.                 1. /A /M /CHKHI options now forced ON for all virus scan
  310.                    functions. (Check ALL file extension types, check memory
  311.                    for ALL resident type virus innfections, check to
  312.                    1024Kb (1088) on machines so expanded.) Previously the
  313.                    /M and /CHKHI were user options implemented by default
  314.                    table entry.

  316.                    Users should make every effort to use only the most recent
  317.                    version of McAfee Associates SCAN.EXE .
  318.  
  319.                 2. Changed message "This program needs TERMINUS" to "ACCESS
  320.                    DENIED! Please run ZT61B.EXE" . This string is displayed
  321.                    when ZTCF1.EXE and/or ZTCF2.EXE are run from the command
  322.                    line and not from within the main program ZT61B.EXE .

  324.                 3. The PRINTDOC.BAT was changed to print ZT61B.DOC * AND *
  325.                    README.1ST files.
  326.  
  327.                 4. Added start-up error message for "COMMAND.COM Not Found".
  328.                    Floppy installation requires that the user place a copy
  329.                    of COMMAND.COM on the Terminus disk. Terminus assumes you
  330.                    are using floppy installation if the first two characters
  331.                    of default table entry #1 are either "A:" or "B:" and will
  332.                    look ONLY in the floppy ROOT directory for COMMAND.COM if
  333.

  337.                    COMSPEC fails to reveal the location of COMMAND.COM .
  338.                    In the event that COMSPEC returns null (and you are using a
  339.                    hard disk installation) because no PATH statement was used
  340.                    in your AUTOEXEC.BAT (or SHELL statement in CONFIG.SYS) etc.
  341.                    it will assume COMMAND.COM is in the C: ROOT directory.
  342.  
  343.                    COMMAND.COM is necessary to insure FULL access to certain
  344.                    ZIP TERMINUS program functions.
  345.  
  346.                 5. Corrections and additions were made to the program
  347.                    documentation files.
  348.  
  349.              DO NOT use the ZIP Terminus virus scan functions in any
  350.         environment or on any machine where another virus disinfector utility
  351.         is or has been run. This includes but is not limited to TSR virus
  352.         utilities. No claim is made herein or otherwise as to compatibility
  353.         with other author/program virus disinfector & detector utilities.
  354.  
  355.    ***** NOTE: The ZIP Terminus virus scan functions SHOULD NOT be
  356.                used with any other virus detection or disinfection software.
  357.                Certain other anit-virus programs do not utilize encrypted
  358.                search strings and other advanced techniques which may cause
  359.                false alarms either with Terminus or during their own operation.
  360.                This warning extends but is not limited to TSR type detectors.
  361.                Use The ZIP Terminus in concert with the McAfee Associates
  362.                anti-virus programs ONLY for best results.(Read VT40B.DOC)

  364.                The use of non-encrypted search strings is in direct contrast
  365.                to current accepted industry standards and suggested CVIA
