- │ Word_Challenge! now supports COMPort speeds of 300 to 115,200 │
- └────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
- Now for Home or Classroom use as well as Bulletin Boards !
-
-
- This Docfile is Set to 64 lines, Please set your Printer accordingly.
-
-
-
- ┌──────────────────────────────┐
- │What kind of Game is this?: ──┤
- └──────────────────────────────┘
-
- The game is simple, you are presented with a MAIN word, and you are
- asked to make other words out of the letters contained in the MAIN
- word. Simple right? Ok, give it your best shot!
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- ┌───────────────┐
- │Upgrading: ────┤
- └───────────────┘
-
- If you are already running a Registered version of Word_Challenge!
- Then you will need the .CFG, Wordc.Exe, Maintain.Exe, and Rules!
- files in this package.
- Be sure to re-do the new .CFG file. and as always: If all else fails,
- Start over..
-
- If you are running an Un-Registered copy then you will have to start
- the game over from scratch. This version does not recognize the word
- list from earlier Un-Registered Shareware versions.
-
- ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────-
- ┌──────────────────────┐
- │CLASSROOM setting: ───┤
- └──────────────────────┘
-
- This Version is now fully "Universal" in that it is not only
- a BBS Door game ready for On-Line use, it can also be used
- in a HOME or CLASSROOM Environment as an Educational Tool !
-
- Please refer to "LOCAL Set-Up" for more info on how to use
- Word_Challenge! in a Home or Classroom setting. The INSTALL
- instructions below apply to both Bbs and Home/Classroom
- installation.
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- ┌────────────┐
- │ INSTALL: ──┤ FOLLOW EACH 4 STEPS
- └────────────┘
-
- Word_Challenge MUST be installed to your Hard Drive.
-
- 1. Create the Directory you will use for this Game on your Hard Drive.
-
- 2. * If you received this game on a diskette then copy ALL the files
- into the Directory you created.
-
- * If you received this game in a ZIPfile then put the ZIPfile in your
- new directory and unZIP all contents of ZIP into it.
-
- 3. Edit the WORDC.CFG (Configuration file) to your Exact set-up.
- 4. Run Maintain.Exe (this is also a first time INSTALL program)
-
- -This will Create 3 other directories and copy the Words?.?? files-
- -into the WORDS directory. The first game will be initializd at -
- -this time as well, so will the proper Data files and other files -
-
- Maintain.Exe is a dual purpose program, it initiates and installs
- the game, and Maintains weekly maintenance and updating through your
- Bbs's "Event" options.
-
- If your Bbs does not support "Events" or you are using this program
- in a Home or Classroom environment then you will have to perform
- the Maintenance yourself by Running Maintain.Exe on a weekly basis,
- or whatever you decide is best .
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
-
- ┌──────────┐
- │TO RUN: ──┤ (ON A BULLETIN BOARD SYSTEM)
- └──────────┘
- Your .BAT file should read as follows:
-
-
- CD C:\Sf\Doors\Door-A ;Switch to Door Directory
- Copy C:\Sf\Door.Sys ;Copy Door.Sys into Door Directory
- Wordc ;RUN the Game
- Erase Door.Sys ;Delete Door.Sys after game is over
-
- Thats it..
-
- ┌──────────┐
- │TO RUN: ──┤ (HOME or in a CLASSROOM) see below
- └──────────┘
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────-
- ┌────────────────┐
- │LOCAL Set-Up:───┤ (AT HOME OR IN A CLASSROOM)
- └────────────────┘
-
- For use in the home or classroom setting you must be sure you have
- "edited" the above Configuration file, following the instructions in
- INSTALL instructions (above). Those "settings" in the config file that
- do not pertain to you just leave "As Is".
-
- You are now ready to RUN the program. There are two ways:
-
- 1)
- Make sure you are in the WORDC directory,
- then type:
- WORDC LOCAL
-
- You will be presented with a Logon Screen, type your name
- and a password (to distinguish You from others who may play
- the game). This first time you will be recognized as a NEW
- Player and asked if you would like to have your name added
- to the list, type Y of course and RETURN. You are now ready
- play.
-
- 2) (This is the BETTER way).
-
-
- Create a Batch file in the Game directory for each person who will
- be playing the game, call them anything you want, any rendition of
- the person actual name is advisable. This would be the best way for
- a Classroom setting. I created mine and called it "Jim-S.Bat".
- This way the Student can simply type their Batch filename and the
- game will start without having to go through the tedious rituals of
- the Local Screen all the time.
-
- In the BATCH file put: (all on ONE line!)
-
- WORDC Local -P=Yourpass -N=Yourname
-
- LOCAL means to load in Local Mode
- -N= Tells the program your Name
- -P= Tells the program your Password
-
- ────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
-
- ┌───────────────────────────┐
- │WEEKLY MAINTENANCE !: ─────┤ Home or Classroom
- └───────────────────────────┘
-
-
- Whenever you are ready to CHANGE the word in the game, and I recommend
- this be done once a week (you may do it daily if you wish!). Once a
- week gives Everybody a fair chance at the game..
-
- Make sure you are in the WORDC directory then type:
-
- MAINTAIN
-
- This will change the word and create the High Score Statistics.
-
-
- ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────-
- ┌───────────────────────────┐
- │WEEKLY MAINTENANCE !: ─────┤ BBS Operations
- └───────────────────────────┘
-
- You will want to Change the WORDlist at least once per week.
- You can do this manually OR through an 'EVENT'.
-
- I set mine up as an EVENT for Sunday morning 00:001am.
-
- In Your EVENT .Bat file simply:
-
-
- CD C:\Sf\Doors\Door-A (change to directory containg the game)
- Maintain (Run the Maintain.Exe program)
-
-
- When the maintenance program is run the following is performed:
-
- - HighScr?.Dat file is read and the Weekly winner is proclaimed.
- the winners Data list is made into a bulletin so that ALL can see howmany
- words s/he was able to guess correctly. An asterisk is placed next to each
- word correctly guessed and the ones without an asterisk are the words not
- guessed by the winner.
-
- - Players List is recorded and made into a bulletin to show WHO played the
- game, and their coorosponding scores.
-
- - The NEW word is then selected and Data files, and new Players list are
- created for the next game.
- ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
-
-
- ┌──────────────────────┐
- │THE CONFIG FILE: ─────┤ (Whats in it?))
- └──────────────────────┘
-
-
- Item #1: Your KEY Registration, Leave "0" if unregistered.
- #2: Your/Sysop First name
- #3: Your/Sysop Last name
- #4: Full Path to Word_Challenge (Trailing Backslash-)
- #5: Full Path to your Callers.Log (is optional \ )
- #6: Time limit in minutes per log in.
- * I have found 15 to 20 minutes to be more than fair.
- * If used on a Bbs and the caller has less than the configured
- time limit then THAT is what will be reflected in the game.
-
- #7: If you LOCK your COMport at any certain speed answer "Y"
- If you run your Bbs at speeds ABOVE 9600 baud then you MUST
- Lock your Port! (I hope that goes without saying)
-
- #8 Local side gets a few Beeps now and then. Not as many as the User!
- I dont mind them, It lets me know when a user is playing.
- You may not want to listen to it - you can turn them off...
-
- This option lets you tell the game what TIME to turn off the
- Local Beeps,
- If you want the Beeps ON all day enter 2400-2400,
- If you want the Beeps OFF all day put 0000-2400,
- If you want the beeps off from 10pm till 8:am put 2000-0800.
-
- Uses Military Time, 0000 to 2400. Do Not use colons ":" (Ie:20:00)
- You can specify any increment such as 2045-0830, which means
- to turn off the local beeps from 10:45pm till 8:30am .
- MUST BE IN FORM OF 0000-0000 No Spaces
-
- 4 characters each xxxx-xxxx
- └────────── with a dash (-) seperator
-
- (NOTE: F1 allows you to toggle Beeps on/off during gameplay also)
-
- #9 Number of times the player is allowed to enter the game per day..
- * Once the player enters a Game their TIMER begins, If the player
- decides to "Log Off" before their allocated Time Limit ends
- then the remainder of time for that game is forfieted.
-
- If the player does not enter a game, IE: just looks at the daily
- Scores and leaves, then they are not "Docked" a turn.
-
- #10 If your using a FOSSIL Driver then be sure to set this to Y ...
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- ┌──────────────────────────────────┐
- │ F-Keys of interest: ─────────────┤
- └──────────────────────────────────┘
-
- BBS AND LOCAL USE:
- F1 = Toggle Local Beeps On/Off during gameplay. Local or Online
-
- BBS USE ONLY:
- F5 = Chatmode. (esc to exit), the caller is reimbersed the amount of
- time the sysop keeps the caller in chat! so keep in short..
- F10 = Return Caller to Bbs. Ends and Saves Game..
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────-
-
-
- ┌───────────────────────────────────┐
- │WHY is this Game Educational ?: ───┤
- └───────────────────────────────────┘
-
- During the course of the game (in Competition) the players
- of Word_Challenge build confidence in their Spelling, Reasoning,
- Competetivness and Typing each time they Play the Game.
-
- Not only do they learn new words, but they actually teach
- themselves MORE words, and, Since this game does not give
- a dictionary definition of the Main Word, you will find the
- Player eager to look it up in the dictionary on their own.
-
- I have personally seen a 9 year olds vocabulary Grow tremen-
- dously after several months of playing this game. Within a year
- he was able to maintain competition with the adults that play,
- winning on several occasions, and his typing abilitys grew at
- the same pace.
-
- This game started out 8 years ago as a Bulletin Board On-Line
- Game. After seeing so many people benefit from it's use I
- decided to rewrite portions to allow for what is called LOCAL
- use (in home use), or a Classroom Setting.
-
- Once you have SET UP this game and have tested it out yourself
- you will understand it's benefits. Both in a Classroom OR
- on a Bulletin Board..
-

- ┌─────────────────────────────────────────────┐
- │WHY aren't ALL the words on the list ?!?! ───┤
- └─────────────────────────────────────────────┘
-
- Answer 1:
- My Dictionary only contains 35,434 words, I am well
- aware that it does not contain ALL the possible words.
- in fact, i'm sure I missed even some of the most Simple
- ones ! - Nevertheless, 35,434 words is a LOT of words !!
-
- Answer 2:
- This simply -Is Not- a Thesaurus, it's a game ...
-
-
- Still, there will be very few games in which the player will guess
- ALL the words on the list! (if any)
-
- And PLEASE, advise your players to Play Fair, the use of
- Electronic Spell Checkers may help them Win a game or two,
- but this game is NOT about "Winning", this game is meant
- for those who enjoy -Brain Games-.
-
- This is not an Arcade Game where cunning is part of the game
- this is a self IQ tester, played by those who feel they have
- as much intelligence as the next person .. And Can Prove It!
-
-
-
-
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- This program was NOT tossed together in a few days OR weeks. To date this
- program has been in operation for 8 years, modifications and rewrites
- have pretty much found all the hidden bugs, but Never say Never!
