- Introduction
- ------------
-
- VPID has been in the making and in use on my own BBS for some time.
- Recently I fixed a major bug and when I first started using VPID on
- my own BBS, I had a few visisting SysOps who wanted a copy. I don't
- like to release low quality software (i.e. when major bugs haven't
- been squashed) so VPID was an Alpha version for about 2 years.
-
- You'd think after all that testing VPID would be a heck of a piece
- of software. Well it's not. It's a very crude piece of software
- that essentially "gets the job done". At least on my BBS it does.
-
- VPID is written using the Opendoors programming toolkit. Most of
- the major functionality built into Opendoors will obviously then
- be present in VPID (i.e. status screens, chat, etc.).
-
- Included in the archive is a DORINFO1.DEF file that will allow the
- door to be run in local mode. Simply run VPID.EXE and see how it
- looks.
-
- DSZ.EXE (or GSZ renamed to DSZ.EXE) is required when you set it up
- on your BBS.
-
- Sorry for the crudeness, but this program was written to serve my
- own system and it does just what I need it to.

- Instructions
- ------------
-
- VPID is very rudimentary. It simply allows the PLAYERx.RST and
- PLAYERx.TRN files to be uploaded and downloaded by users. The
- BBS SysOp must take care of configuring VGA Planets, running
- HOST.EXE, etc. This program does not have feature-itis. :-)
-
- o VPID doesn't take any command line parameters.
-
- o VPID expects to find a door information file in the current
- working directory (most supported types such as DORINFOx.DEF,
- DOOR.SYS, etc.).
-
- o DSZ.EXE is the expected for file transfers. This part of the
- code is the weakest. It simply tries to transfer the PLAYERx
- files with either Xmodem, Ymodem or Zmodem. The file transfer
- command uses the following format:
-
- DSZ.EXE port <COM port> <protocol> <filename>
-
- An example download of PLAYER1.RST would then be:
-
- DSZ.EXE port 1 sz PLAYER1.RST
-
-
- Files used by VPID if present:
-
- VPID.ASC, VPID.ANS, or VPID.RIP
- Appropriate version (depending on user's terminal emulation)
- will be displayed at startup.
-
- VPID.DAT
- Binary data file that contains player information. Delete
- to reset.
-
- VPID.MSG
- Rudimentary user messages file. ASCII format.
-
- VPIDHELP.ASC, VPIDHELP.ANS, or VPIDHELP.RIP
- Help file.
-
- VPIDSCOR.ASC, VPIDSCOR.ANS, VPIDSCOR.RIP
- Score file.
-
- SCORE.LOG
- VGA Planets score file (displayed if present if VPIDSCOR.*
- isn't).
-
- VPID.EXE
- The door interface program.

-
- VPID is free for use, abuse or misuse. I require no registration
- fee, I don't want you to drink a beer, and you don't have to send me
- an e-mail telling me that you're using this program.
-
- The bad news is, you get what you pay for. Use this software at
- your own risk and don't expect any upgrades from me.
-
- However, I'm certainly open to getting an e-mail about the software.
