- The Easy to Use, Versatile
- BBS News Bulletin Generator.

- Documentation by Jeremy Gaither and Michael Gedeon
-
-
- -=■[ What is VNewz? ]■=-
-
- VNewz is a highly configurable News Bulletin Generator. It
- allows the SysOp to enter news bulletins as if they were messages,
- like they should be. VNewz includes an internal editor, and
- requires no strange, cryptic control files to generate the news.
- VNewz also supports configuration of character colors based on Case
- or Type. In registered mode, VNews is even more versatile. It
- supports message expiration, so your news will only run however long
- you want it to run, and allows configuration of the news border
- colors and styles.
-
- Features:
-
- ■ Easy to set up!
- ■ Easy to use!
- ■ Full screen internal message editor with word wrap
- ■ Automatic sorting of messages, newest to oldest
- ■ Move forward or backward in message viewing
- ■ See messages as they will appear to the user
- ■ Select text colors
- ■ Select frame styles and colors (Reg'd Only)
- ■ Set automatic message expiration (Reg'd Only)
-
-

-
- 1) VNEWZ is copyrighted by Jeremy Gaither, and may only be used
- in accordance with the conditions set forth in this document.
-
- 2) VNEWZ is "SHAREWARE". You may use this software for a period
- NOT to exceed 30 calendar days. After that time, you must STOP
- using this software, or register it.
-
- 3) VNEWZ is provided as-is, without any warranties or guarantees
- of any kind, either expressed or implied. In no event, shall
- Jeremy Gaither be liable for you or to anyone else for any type
- of damages or costs incurred from the use or inability to use

-
-
-
- 4) At no time may compensation for distribution of VNEWZ be
- charged, without prior written permission of Jeremy Gaither.
-
- 5) VNEWZ may not be altered, or modified in any way. Only the
- original, unaltered VNEWZ archive may be distributed.
-
-
- -=■[ Registration ]■=-
-
- VNewz is distributed as Shareware, and as such requires
- registration to obtain the extra features. VNewz is also
- affordable compared to other news generators, even with its high
- level of abilities. Registration of VNewz is only $8.00 (US).
- Registration may be sent to the following address:
-
- Vision Systems
- c/o Jeremy Gaither
- 1200 The Meadows Pkwy
- DeSoto, TX 75115-3516
-
- Included in the archive is a file called 'VREG.DOC'. This is
- the registration form that should be used when registering VNewz.
- Upon registration, you will receive a KEY file which you must put in
- the same directory as VNewz. More information about this keyfile
- will be given to you upon registration.
-
- Registration will enable you to do the following:
-
- 1) Optional disable for the loader screen in the beginning of
- VNewz.
- 2) Configuration of the border styles and colors.
- 3) Enables expiration support.
- 4) Removes *UNREGISTERED* messages and closing delay.
-
-
- -=■[ StartUp ]■=-
-
- The first part of setting up VNewz is to unzip the archive,
- which you have probably already done if you are reading this. You
- may put it (VNewz) in a seperate directory or wherever you like.
- VNewz only maintains the executable and a data file, so it will not
- clutter the directory with files.
- {By the next release, ANSi routing for screen display should be
- optional.}
- VNewz requires that an ANSi driver such as ANSI.SYS be loaded
- before the program will run. If one is not loaded, then it needs to
- be loaded in the CONFIG.SYS file (for most systems). For
- information on how to do this, consult your Operating System Manual.
- The next step is to load VNewz. If the data file is not found,
- the configuration program is started. From here you can configure
-
-
- -2-
-
-
-
-
-
- the options that you will use to run VNewz. The options are mostly
- self explanatory, but here is some explanation if needed.
-
- 1) Path to NEWS files w/o extension:
- This tells VNewz where to put the news files it generates.
- Here's an example: C:\BBS\TEXT\NEWS
- Do NOT include the extension. VNewz will tag on the
- extension based on what type of file it is.
- (ANS, ASC, AVT, PCB, or BBS for example)
-
- 2) Pause String:
- This string is something like:
- Press Enter To Continue:
- followed by whatever control code is used to make your BBS
- stop and wait for enter. (ex: Ctrl-A) To enter control
- characters, you must press Ctrl-P before the control
- character you wish to type. (Ctrl-P, Ctrl-A)
-
- 3) Reset w/ defaults:
- This is used to re-install all the color defaults.
-
- 4) Edit Colors:
- This is used to edit the colors of the text. The menu
- following it is pretty much self explanatory.
-
- 5) Edit Border:
- This is where you edit the border configuration. This is a
- registered only option. The sub menu allows you to edit the
- colors of the border, the type of border, the lines used
- to draw the border, the brackets, the bracket colors, and
- subject dithering. Also included is a quick sample message
- so you can see what your setup looks like easier. The best
- way to understand this menu is experimentation.
-
- 1,2,3 - Allows you to change the colors of the High, Medium,
- and Low color dithering of the border.
-
- 4 - Changes the color of the brackets
-
- 5 - Dither Subject Area - This allows for a nicer color
- distribution for the subject.
-
- 6 - Changes the border format. Currently there are three
- formats : Plain, Random, and Alternate #1.
-
- 7 - Changes the line format. There are several selectable
- formats that you have to choose from, and they are all
- displayed on the screen.
-
- 8,9 - Allows you to change the character used for the left
-
-
- -3-
-
-
-
-
-
- and right brackets.
-
- P - Previews what a sample VNEWZ message would look like
- according to the configuration you have set up.
-
- Q - Quits the Border and line configuration menu
-
- There are three different border styles, and four
- different line types, for a total of 12 different borders.
- This does not include the number of possibilities with the
- three different colors within the border itself.
-
- 6) Sysop Name:
- When you get your key, this is the field where you need to
- enter your name.
-
- 7) ANSi loader:
- This is a toggle. If VNewz is registered, then this will
- allow you to turn the ANSi loader off and on at your
- discretion.
-
- 8) File Extensions:
- In this sub-menu, you are allowed to define the extensions
- for the different file types. The file types supported are
- as follows: ANSi, ASCii, AVaTar, PCBoard, WildCat!. The
- default extensions are entered when you turn them on. To
- turn the generation of that screen type OFF, delete the
- extension. 'Inactive' will replace it.
-
-
- -=■[ Operation ]■=-
-
- Now that VNews is all set up, the program will take you to the
- main menu. Selecting '1' will allow you to read existing messages
- much like a message base, with forward and backward commands. Here
- is also where you can toggle the Active/Inactivity of a message.
- You may also edit existing messages or delete them from here. Here
- is a list of the available options while reading messages:
-
- [N] for Next message,
- [P] for Previous message,
- [A] to change the activity (status),
- [E] to edit the current message
- [D] to delete the current message,
- [S] to stop displaying messages.
-
- Option '2' will take you to the editor, where you can enter a
- NEW news message. The editor uses the standard commands of most
- text editors. Pressing 'ESC' will allow you to end the session and
- save the message. When you select to save the message, you will be
-
-
- -4-
-
-
-
-
-
- asked for an expiration date (registered only). If you want the
- message to expire after a certian date, type the expiration date in
- in a standard format: 07-16-95 ; Month - Day - Year. You can
- either use dashes, slashes, or spaces to seperate the numbers.
- To get back to the configuration, press 'C'. To exit, press
- 'Q'. Exiting in this manner will update the news files. If you do
- NOT want to update the news files, press 'X' to exit, and it will
- bypass that. After VNewz is done with processing news files and
- closing the data file, you are back at DOS. Now you can use the
- screens VNewz generated on your BBS. Now wasn't that simple?
-
-
- -=■[ Color Codes ]■=-
-
- VNews also has the ability to add other colors to the text for
- emphasis. To insert a color code, add |bf before the text, and |00
- to return it to normal. The 'bf' in the code is the hex code of the
- color attribute. Background goes first, and Forground next. If the
- background color is a 'bright' color, the foreground text will
- blink. Here is a list of those color codes for your convienience.
-
- ■ Normal ■ ■ Bright ■
- 0 - black 8 - bright black
- 1 - blue 9 - bright blue
- 2 - green A - bright green
- 3 - cyan B - bright cyan
- 4 - red C - bright red
- 5 - magenta D - bright magenta
- 6 - brown E - yellow
- 7 - gray F - white
-
-
- -=■[ Expiration ]■=-
-
- If VNewz is registered, it will allow you to enter a expiration
- date. To run the Expiration Maint, add this to your maint batch
- file:
- VNEWZ /M
-
- This will start VNews in Maint mode, setting all expired news
- messages to Inactive. If you want to delete the expired messages
- instead of deleting them, then use the switch /MD. In Maint mode,
- VNews will not touch any inactive messages, whether they are expired
- or not. If a message does not include an expiration date, it will
- run until you remove it (or set it inactive).
-
-
- -=■[ VNEWZ.DAT ]■=-
-
- VNEWZ.DAT is the data file file for VNewz. It contains ALL the
-
-
- -5-
-
-
-
-
-
- news messages, as well as the configuration file. Deleting this
- file will result in the loss of all your messages, and your
- configuration. You should NOT do this unless you have been advised
- that the Data file is corrput.
-
-
- -=■[ Closing ]■=-
-
- I have spent many long hours trying to develop a news package
- that would be used by many people. I have attempted to make it
- bug-free, and compatible with many BBS types. If you find a bug,
- please tell me about it. I can be contacted any of the following
- ways.
-
- NetMail: 1:124/8015@fidonet.org
- Internet: jeremy.gaither@archives.com
-
- at my BBS: (214)228-3521
-
- or by snail-mail at:
-
- Vision Systems
- c/o Jeremy Gaither
- 1200 The Meadows Pkwy
- DeSoto, TX 75115-3516
-
- Please make all bug reports as thorough as you can. Detail when
- the problem occurs, what it does and doesn't do, and what it says
- when it happens. All this information can make it a LOT easier to
- locate and fix the bug.
-

-
- If you enjoyed VNewz, you might want to snag some of our other
- programs. Here is a list of the current programs.
-
-
-
- -6-
-
-
-
-
-
- Demon Mail v1.3 - The Background Mail Processor. Demon Mail is
- the answer to all those mail processing problems. If you have a
- multitasker, you can now process mail in the BACKGROUND! Demon Mail
- is used to detect inbound mail, outbound mail in your message areas,
- and *.TIC files that need to be processed. The current version is
- in Alpha testing, and now includes better, more reliable checking
- through semaphore files, and an optional pager contact in case of
- BBS failure.
- Features:
- - Supports OS/2, DESQview, Windows, and TopView Time Slicing
- Support.
- - Checks to see if file is Locked (in use by another program,
- like your mailer) before it exits. If it is, Demon Mail
- doesn't exit; It waits for it to become available.
- - Only requires a couple of simple changes to your batch
- files to get it up and running.
- - Has a configurable delay between checking for files that
- need to be processed.
-
-
- VCaller v1.2 - Yesterdays and Todays Callers list for
- RemoteAccess without the hassle of midnight events! VCaller
- generates stylish ANSi, ASCii, & AVaTar screens listing all the
- important information about your callers. Also currently in Alpha,
- VCaller is being optimized for customiozable colors, total calls
- today, and modified to include such features as 'who is online',
- FrontDoor compatible last inbound/outbound.
-
- We have other projects planned, such as a user editor door and a
- questionaire door, and if you have suggestions for other projects,
- we would be happy to consider them.
