-
- Welcome to ProFAM - the most complete File Area Manager yet in existence
- (at least to the knowledge of the author..). And so it will stay.
-
- - What does other programs offer?
-
- ProFAM does the job of several loose utilities - and then some jobs that
- no current utility does. It allows for easy editing of the Files.Bbs;
- easy reconfiguring of the BBS file areas; sorting, inserting, deleting
- areas and more. It allows copying and moving (hurling) files between file
- areas and to other directories, allows files to be imported to or from
- floppy disks. It creates all file area listings You may need, without
- having to reconfigure for each new list.
-
- This is all "common utilites" and there are several programs that can do
- this. Maybe not so integrated and user friendly, but anyway. The real
- power comes with the things ProFAM can do that no other program does:
-
- - Files.Bbs/DIR editing
-
- The Files.Bbs editor is crammed with functions, almost anything that
- can be wished for, and if it it not there, it is because noone has
- suggested it yet. Just drop me a note, and there is a good chans that
- it will be incorporated in the next release.
-
- Full support for Missing files, Orphan files, specially deleted files
- and offline files. Full Repack, Scan and Repack options. Even a
- function for packing separate files into one archive (with Your own
- favourite packer). Calls whatever external program You may desire
- leaving only 200-300 bytes resident. Fully dynamic, handles up to
- many thousand lines of Files.Bbs.
-
- - Area Editing
-
- One of the highligts of ProFAM is the ability to actually edit the
- File Area setup (in FILES.RA for RA users). This has functions to
- insert or delete areas, sorting them, and much more. Ever faced the
- problem of adding a new file area in RA, but there is no empty space
- just below the logical new location? Having similar areas spread over
- the entire base?
-
- All this and more is now handled by ProFAM - with the exception of
- Maximus mode; the setup of the file areas is just not made with
- thought for such utilities as this. Sorry about that, but who knows,
- it may change (separate definition files for File areas and Message
- areas maybe?)
-
- - Listings
-
- When creating listings, 10 user defined listings can be activated at
- one time, and all of these are created simultaneously - scanning all
- file areas only once! the listings themself can be of 8 types, with
- user definable outfile names, header names, new file date testing, and
- more.
-
- From version 2.10 this also includes user definable headers and
- trailers for the listings, with %-tokens replaced with information
- taken from the listing itself, such as number of files, number of
- new files, size of all or new files, date, time, and more.
-
- - New Functions
-
- Automatically repacks files to your favourite pack format - and then
- hurling the file or files to the correct file area! All in unattended
- mode. Handles the move of files to external storage with inbuilt
- routines. Handles the deletion of unwanted files - saving a placeholder
- that will disallow uploads of that file again with most BBS programs.
- Adjusts UL and DL counters to a uniform format - with internal handling
- of these. Adjusts all listings to adhere to the standards (as used by RA
- 1.x). Adds descriptions automatically to up or downloaded files - based
- on the actual file. Searches for duplicates through all file areas,
- allowing even duplicates with different pack formats to be found.
-
- From version 2.10 it can also automatically adopt file description from
- the standard FILE_ID.DIZ file.
-
- - User Interface and usage
-
- The user interface is designed to be as logical as we could make it, and
- of course there is context sensitive help available everywhere. It can
- use the number of lines on the screen that You use - not fixed to any
- special as is all too common. All colors are configurable but a color
- monitor or at least grey scale is preferred since ProFAM displays lots of
- information that is color coded for simplicity and ease of use.
-
- ProFAM also performs many of the tasks in unattended, batch, mode.
- Routines such as Creating filelists, other listings, updating Headers
- with current information, adjusting Files.bbs files, and more, all can
- use Batch mode.
-
- ALL THIS (AND MUCH MORE) IN ONE PROGRAM!
-
- - Installing
-
- For more information simply install it on your hard disk, and try it out!
- To get it to do some serious work, reading the manual is not even
- neccessary. Just unarchive all files into any directory You may like.
- Then start by invoking ProFAM.EXE. As simple as that!
-
- Note that there are 2 versions of ProFAM.EXE: the one called ProFAMno.EXE
- does not use overlays and can be used where EMS or Hard Disk overlays
- causes trouble. Both version do use 80286 commands, but for a specific
- XT version please contact the author. To use the NonOverlayed version
- simply rename ProFAMno.EXE to ProFAM.EXE.
-
- When ProFAM discovers that no config file exists, it creates one with
- default values, and then enter BBS System config. This setup must be
- completed for the program to run, and the important things are the BBS
- type You use, and what path to the BBS system directory (e.g. C:\RA).
- When that is entered, press F10 for save and just start use it!
-
- Remember - be sure to rename the *.KEY file You received (for those
- with the full version) to PROFAM.KEY - and note that this file must be
- located in the same directory as PROFAM.EXE.
