- o What is it ?
-
- PBNet is a Fido-type driver for the Powerboard BBS package
- developed by Scott Brown. It can handle FidoNet, as well as
- other networks which are handled in a similar and compatible
- way.
-
- The node setup, FidoNet applications, and hub agreements are
- beyond the purpose of this text and will not be covered.
-
-
- o How do I install it on my Powerboard 1.25a BBS ?
-
- Once you have been assigned a node number by the network
- administrator, you can basically start receiving and sending
- echomail and netmail. You will need to install PBNet.
-
- PBNet consists of 3 key files:
-
- - PBNETOUT.EXE - the PBNet mail exporter
- - PBNETIN.EXE - the PBNet mail importer
- - PBNET.CFG - configuration file required by both the
- exporter and the importer.
-
- PBNet creates and uses the following files:
-
- - POINTERS.IDX This is where the high message pointers are
- kept. (PBNET directory)
-
- - *.LNK These are the files PBNet uses to keep track
- of the messages in your message base, for the
- purpose of building message threads, and for
- avoiding duplicate in/out mail.
-
- Do not delete any of these files, they are important to PBNet.
-
-
- 1. To install PBNet, create a PBNET directory off your mailer's
- root directory. That is, if you are using FrontDoor, you
- might create C:\FD\PBNET\
-
- 2. Copy the three files mentioned above to the directory you
- just created. (PBNETIN.EXE, PBNETOUT.EXE, PBNET.CFG).
-
- 3. Edit PBNET.CFG and change it to reflect your setup.
- The variables PBNets needs set are:
-
- BBSAddress - Your BBS's network address (xxx:yyy/zzz)
- Ex: BBSAddress = 1:123/456
-
- HUBAddress - Your HUB's network address (xxx:yyy/zzz)
-
- PktPassword - The password used for packet security.
-
- BBSPath - The path to Powerboard's main directory.
-
- MsgBasePath - The path to your message base directory
- Ex: MsgBasePath = C:\PB\MESSAGES\
-
- InboundPath - This is the directory where PBNet will look
- for the incomming mail packets (*.PKT)
-
- OutboundPath - This is the directory where PBnet will place
- outgoing mail packets (*.PKT)
-
- MailerOutPath- This is the mailer's outbound directory, and
- it may be different from OutboundPath. PBNet
- will put mail for point systems off of your
- node in this directory, in .MSG files.
- (Hudson Message Format).
-
- AttachPath - This is where files attached to messages are
- placed by your mailer. (Ex: C:\FD\FILES\)
-
- LogFile - If you wish to keep a log of all your mail
- activities, set this variable to point to a log
- file. (Ex: C:\FD\PBNET\PBNET.LOG)
-
- OriginLine - This is a short descriptive line about
- your system. Many sysops put the BBS's name,
- address and phone number here.
-
- SysopName - If specified, PBNet will place netmail for
- this user in FrontDoor's MSG message base.
-
- CompressCommand -
- If specified, PBNet will compress outgoing
- mail using this command line. The first %s
- will be substituted with the archive name
- (internally generated), and the second with
- the PKT name (also internally generated).
-
- DecompressCommand -
- If specified, PBNet will attempt to
- decompress incomming mail using this command
- line. The meanings of the first and second %s
- are the same as above. If your feed sends
- your mail uncompressed, this line willl not
- be used. PBNet cannot guess what compression
- program has been used on incomming mail, but
- if the command line you gave it is not
- usable, the compressed mail will be left
- alone in the incomming directory.
-
- 4. Set-up your conferences to be exported/imported by PBNet:
-
- In PBNET.CFG, after the path and address variables, set up a block
- called AREAS, as in the following example:
-
- [AREAS]
- ; AreaTag PB_conf_number
-
- BUYNSEL 10
- REQUEST 11
- HINTS 13
- NETMAIL 18
- TRASH 19
-
- [AREAS:END]
-
-
- As you noticed, in this block you list the conferences that are
- either echo or netmail conferences.
-
- If you get a message for a conference which you have not specified
- in PBNET.CFG, and you have a "TRASH" area, this is where the
- message will go. Otherwise, it will be ignored.
-
- The NETMAIL conference is also a 'special' conference. This is
- where the private, direct mail is placed, and ALL outgoing mail
- must be ADDRESSED, or it will be rejected.
-
- REMEMBER to put the [AREAS:END] line after the last area.
-
- Save PBNET.CFG.
-
- Set up your conferences with AREACFG.EXE, to match the settings in
- PBNET.CFG
-
- You're all set.
-
- Should you ever need to set a high pointer manually, use the
- HI.EXE utility which is included.
-
- Run is as in: HI 123 56993 to change the high exported message
- number in area #123 to 56993.
-
- To view a high message, type simply HI 123 to view the high
- message number for area #123.
-
-
- o How do I send NETMAIL ?
-
- Sending netmail is very easy and straight forward. Also, it is
- PowerMail compatible.
-
- To send netmail, all you need to do is put the address of the
- recepient after his/her name, as in:
-
- From: My Name
- To: Radu Hociung 1:250/642.1
- Subject: How's it goin' pal ?
-
- If the address will not fit entirely in the To: field, put it
- on the first line of the message, as in:
-
-
- From: My Name
- To: Radu Hociung Longname
- Subject: How's it goin' pal ?
- -----------------------------------
- To: 1:250/642.1
-
- Hi, Radu ....
-
- o Can I send mail to someone on the Internet ?
-
- Yep.
-
- Write the message in the NETMAIL conference.
-
- To send Internet Mail to "radu@io.org", type the following in
- the To: Field:
-
- "To: radu@io.org 1:1/31".
-
- Then type your message as you would type any other message.
-
- Note 1: Your Internet gateway may be different from "1:1/31"
- ... substitute its address in the above example.
-
- Note 2: If the Internet address is too long to fit in the To:
- field, and still leave room for the gateway address,
- you can normally send mail to "UUCP 1:1/31" and then
- put the Internet address on the first line of the
- message, as in: From: My Name To: UUCP 1:1/31 Subject:
- How's it goin' pal ?
- -----------------------------------
-
- To: radu@some.mailer.server.with.a.really.long.name
-
- Hi, Radu ....
-
- o My mailer intercepts PKTs and the messages never make it
- to the message base. What can I do ?
-
- Most mailers have a configuration or a run-time command-
- line-parameter which tells them not to unpack incoming PKTs. If
- you are using FrontDoor 2+, the command line switch is
- /NOUNPACK. Even if you get mail for one of your points, or for
- other systems, PBNet will do one of two things:
-
- 1. If the PKT has your node address stamp on it, the
- mail for your points will be unpacked as if
- FrontDoor unpacked it, so it will be sent out.
-
- 2. If the PKT does NOT have your address stamp on it,
- PBNet will ignore it. This may happen if you run
- multiple nets, in which case you will need to run a
- copy of PBNet for each of the nets you are
- carrying.
-
-
- o You still have questions ?
-
- Send me mail at either 1:250/642.1 on Fido or radu@io.org on the
- Internet.
