- Welcome to NodeView - a powerful and easy-to-use tool for
- nodelist searching. NodeView allows you to search for
- other BBS systems, with searches based on the name of the
- BBS, it's location, the name of the sysop, or even part
- of the telephone number. This last feature is especially
- useful as it allows you to locate other BBS systems in
- your local dialling area.
-
- At every stage, options are presented as a selection of
- "buttons" - to press a button, simply press the letter
- which is highlighted on the button. You have already
- found out how to find this help screen. If a button
- caption is highlighted in white then that is the "default"
- button and it can *also* be pressed by hitting the "Enter"
- key. If a selection of buttons are available, you may
- highlight each in turn by pressing your "Tab" key (try it
- now on the 'More' and 'Cancel' buttons). Press "Enter"
- when the key you want is selected, or just press the hot-
- key letter marked in yellow. A short-cut has been
- provided for the "Cancel" button, as this allows you to
- back-track out of any screen inside NodeView. A "Cancel"
- button can be pressed using the "Escape" key.
-
- The main screen provides four buttons for doing a search
- based on the BBS name, location, telephone number or the
- name of the sysop. Each option brings up a similar box
- in which you enter your search string. You will then be
- prompted for the maximum number of records which you wish
- to find - the maximum is 99. If your search results in 99
- matches then you have probably not specified the search
- string carefully enough. NodeView will then search the
- nodelist(s) looking for instances of your requested data.
-
- NodeView will return a match for ANY entry which contains
- your string (and ignores case), so that if you enter "da"
- as a sysop-name, NodeView will find "David" and "Amanda".
- This feature works for all search categories.
-
-
- NodeView v2.0 also introduces telephone number translation
- because numbers are listed in international format in the
- nodelists. For example, the Farnborough code is 01252 but
- appears as 44-1252 in the nodelist. If your sysop has set
- the necessary translations, local numbers will be listed
- in the correct format for you to dial. Any non-digit
- characters (such as "-") are ignored. Please remember that
- any node with MO listed in the flags is a mail-only system
- and does not accept callers, and that nodes without CM in
- the flags are not running 24 hours-a-day. Bear this in
- mind before dialling any number listed here.
-
-
- While NodeView is searching the nodelists, progress is
- shown by a sliding red indicator. The number of matches
- is also indicated. To stop the search at any time, press
- the "Stop" button. When you halt a search, or allow a
- search to complete, the results of the search will be
- displayed. You can browse through the list of matches by
- selecting the "Back" and "Next" keys, or press "Cancel" to
- return to the main menu.
