-
- ────────────────────[ INSTALLATION AND CONFIGURATION ]─────────────────
-
- ────────────────────────────[ INSTALLATION ]───────────────────────────
-
- To install MKRead, unarchive the MKRead archive. The files can be
- placed in any directory, but it is recommended that they are placed
- in your main BBS directory. Be sure you have the BBS environment
- variable set in your AUTOEXEC.BAT so that MKRead can properly find the
- BBS configuration files. (normally you will already have your BBS
- environment setting defined)
-
- Environment example: SET MK=C:\MK (for MK BBS)
- SET RA=C:\RA (for Remote Access)
- SET EZY=C:\EZY (for Ezycom)
-
- If you are running in a point setup, please see page 12.
-
- ────────────────────────────[ CONFIGURATION ]─────────────────────────
-
- When you first run MKRead, the program will load the configuration
- menu. You will need to adjust the default options to help MKRead
- work in the way you will use best. Following is a break-down of each
- configuration option:
-
-
- NAME : This is the name that will be used for entering mail
- and replying to messages.
-
- USER NUM : This is the user number in the USERS.BBS file for
- the named user of MKRead in the NAME option.
-
- EDITOR : Here, you can define an external text editor to use
- when you edit your messages. If this is left blank,
- the internal editor will be used.
-
- * For example, to use the Q-Edit text editor, you would
- enter C:\QED\Q.EXE. The extension (.EXE) is
- REQUIRED. Be sure to use a STRAIGHT Ascii Editor.
-
- USE TEXT : If you are running in a point setup, or to use the
- CONTROL FILE external text configuration, set this to Yes. See
- page 12 for more details.
-
- QUOTE STR : This is the quote string that will be used when you
- reply to a message and include parts of the previous
- message. The "@" character represents the initials
- of the person who wrote the original message.
-
- BEEP YOUR MAIL : Setting this option to Yes tells MKRead to beep when
- it gets to a message that is addressed to you.
-
- SPELL CHECKER : Define a program that will check the spelling of the
- message you have just entered. Leave this field
- blank to disable this option.
-
- * For example, to use ShareSpell to check the spelling
- of your message, enter C:\BBS\SS.EXE. The extension
- (.EXE) is REQUIRED.
-
-
- ══════════════════════[ MKRead On-Line Message Editor ]══════════ Page 5
-
-
- QUOTE HEADER : To have a Unix-style header placed at the beginning
- of each quoted reply, enter your header here. The
- following control characters can be used:
-
- | - Indicates a carriage return.
- %F - Indicates original FROM name.
- %T - Indicates original TO name.
- %S - Indicates original SUBJECT.
- %D - Indicates original DATE.
- %W - Indicates original TIME (When).
-
- * EXAMPLE:
-
- Quote Header: In A Message To %T <On %D> %F Wrote:|
-
- Would put the following at the top of your reply:
-
- In A Message To Mark May <On 05-13-92> Andy Harris Wrote:
-
- NEW MAIL ONLY : This option would give you access to the messages
- marked as unread in your user file when set to Yes.
- When set to No, you will have access to all of the
- messages in the current message area, but MKRead will
- start at the first unread message.
-
- TAGLINES : Setting this to Yes will enable taglines to be used
- in your replies. This is discussed later on page 9.
-
- MSG ORDER : Different sorting options are available for MKRead.
- This allows you to chose in which order you will read
- the mail. The following options are available:
-
- MSG NUMBER - Goes in the order of the messages as they are numbered
- in the message base.
- DATE/TIME - In order of earliest/latest date of message.
- FROM - Goes by name in alphabetical order, first to last.
- SUBJECT - Read by subject in alphabetical order, first to last.
-
- NETMAIL PATH : By indicating a path here to your *.MSG Netmail area,
- you can use MKRead to read your mail in that area.
-
- NETMAIL : With this option, you can select the attributes that
- will be used for your netmail messages. These will
- be the default options, and can be adjusted for each
- message before it is entered.
-
- ANSI BAUD : Lets you simulate the baud rate of viewing ANSI
- messages.
-
- PRINTER NAME : Lets you set which printer the Alt-P should print a
- message too. (Example PRN, LPT1, etc.)
-
- COLORS : The next 7 options will let you configure the colors
- in MKRead to your liking. You can either enter the
- hexadecimal numbers for each color or press Return
- on each field. This calls up a color chart that you
- can select the colors from.
-
-
- ══════════════════════[ MKRead On-Line Message Editor ]══════════ Page 6
-
-
- ────────────────────────────[ USING MKREAD ]───────────────────────────
-
- To start MKRead, simply type MKREAD and press RETURN (If MKRead is
- in the DOS path). MKRead will load itself and scan the message base.
-
- To use a different configuration file than the default MKREAD.CFG
- file, you can define it on the command line using the /C indicator,
- with the PATH\FILENAME.EXT, such as:
-
- /CC:\MK\MARK.CFG
-
- To load overlays from disk instead of EMS memory, indicate /NOEMS
- or -NOEMS, such as:
-
- MKREAD /NOEMS
-
- To force a "Mode", use the following parameters:
-
- /TM - MK Mode
- /TR - RA Mode
- /TS - SuperBBS Mode
- /TQ - QuickBBS Mode
- /TE - Ezycom Bbs Mode
-
- MKRead also allows the use of an external file, TWIT.CTL, to
- supress messages from selected individuals. This is a normal text file
- with one name per line. The maximum number of names is 20. If the
- last message in an area is twitted, note that the reader will still
- show unread messages in that area when you start up.
-
-
-
- The following options are available as menu commands when reading
- mail:
-
- AREA : This calls up a listing of the message areas defined
- in the message base, and allows you to select a
- different message area for reading. You can change
- to a different message area by highlighting the area
- and pressing ENTER. You can also select it with your
- mouse pointer and pressing the left mouse button.
- Area 501 (Easily reached by pressing [END] is the
- netmail path defined in the configuration setup.
-
- PRIOR : This option takes you to the last read message in
- your selected area.
-
- NEXT : Proceeds to the next message in the selected area and
- is the default option.
-
- EXPORT : This will let you save a message to a text file that
- you specify. You can either append the current file
- or save to a new file.
-
-
- ══════════════════════[ MKRead On-Line Message Editor ]══════════ Page 7
-
- REPLY : Lets you enter a reply to the current message. When
- selecting to reply, you can change the area that your
- reply will be placed in, who it is to, the subject,
- message reference number, and, when applicable, the
- netmail attributes.
-
- ENTER : You can enter a message in an area without having to
- reply to a previous message. Using this option, you
- can post a new message by following the same process
- as replying to a message.
-
- +P : This option allows you to go read the message page by
- page, with this direction going down the body of the
- current message.
-
- -P : Same as above, but travels up the body of the current
- message.
-
- CONFIG : Loads the configuration menu (Explained on page 4).
-
- JUMP : This feature presents you with a list of the messages
- in the current message area. You can "Jump" to one
- by selecting the message with the highlight bar or
- the mouse pointer, and pressing RETURN. You can TAB
- and SHIFT-TAB back and forth between areas with new
- mail in them. Messages that are unread are marked
- with an asterisk (*), while your mail is marked with
- a plus (+). MKRead starts at the first unread message
- in the area.
-
- DEL : Deletes the current message.
-
- SHELL : This lets you shell to the operating system and do
- normal DOS functions. It is not recommended that you
- try to run other programs while in the MKRead shell
- because you may not have enough memory.
-
- VIEW : If the current message has ANSI characters in the
- message, you can view them by using the View command.
- It will display the colors as they were entered.
-
- YOUR : Searches all message areas for mail to you.
-
- QUIT : Exits MKRead with an errorlevel. See page 8.
-
-
-
- ═════════════════════[ MKRead On-Line Message Editor ]═══════════ Page 8
-
- The following keys also work while reading messages:
-
- ALT-T : Brings up your Tagline editing menu. Discussed later
- on page 9.
-
- ALT-R : Does a resort of the messages and moves the unread
- mail down to the end of the Jump list, or after you
- change your message sort selection in the Config
- option.
-
- INS : Same function as the ENTER menu selection, allows
- you to enter a message.
-
- = : Hitting the Equals key (=) toggles the "Received"
- status of the currently selected message.
-
- F1 : Pressing the Function key 1 (F1) brings up help in
- both the internal editor and main menu.
-
- ALT-K : Toggles ^A kludge line displays.
-
- ALT-F : Forwards a message.
-
- ALT-J : Jump to DOS, allows you to shell to the operating
- system. (from the internal message editor)
-
- ALT-P : Prints the current message.
-
- < And > : Using these keys lets you follow the message
- threading, allowing easy viewing of replies.
-
-
- ─────────────────────────[ EXITING ERROR-LEVELS ]─────────────────────
-
-
- When you exit MKRead, it exits with an errorlevel. This is done
- so you can call your echomail processor to toss the mail in the
- message base that you have entered, when applicable. These are the
- exiting errorlevels:
-
- 0 : No mail entered, or if entered, mail was local only.
- 1 : BBS Message-base NetMail.
- 2 : EchoMail.
- 3 : BBS Message-base NetMail and EchoMail.
- 4 : Direct (Area 501, *.MSG-Type) NetMail.
- 5 : Direct Netmail and BBS Message-base NetMail.
- 6 : Direct NetMail and EchoMail.
- 7 : Direct NetMail, BBS Message-Base NetMail, and EchoMail.
-
-
- A Sample batch file is included for your reference.
-
-
- ═════════════════════[ MKRead On-Line Message Editor ]═══════════ Page 9
-
-
- ──────────────────────────────[ TAGLINES ]─────────────────────────────
-
- Taglines are small one-line comments added at the end of a message.
- Many editors today include an option for adding these taglines to your
- messages. Some networks discourage the addition of taglines to
- messages, citing that it adds extra clutter to a message area.
- However, a lot of networks also encourage them.
-
- The taglines for MKRead are stored in a text file called
- TAGLINES.MK. This is an ordinary text file that you can create with
- your text editor. It should be placed in your main BBS directory, or
- with your MKRead program files. The file can hold up to 2000 taglines,
- but the more taglines you have, the more memory MKRead requires.
-
- When you save a message you have entered, MKRead takes a tagline
- from the TAGLINES.MK file and appends it to the end of your message.
-
- The following options are available to help the user to manage your
- taglines:
-
- ALT-S : This allows you to select a tagline to use in the
- next message you enter. This can be called in either
- the internal editor or while reading messages.
-
- ALT-G : Steals the tagline in the current message. MKRead
- may become confused and try to steal the origin line
- with the format of some messages. If a message does
- not contain a tagline, it will then take the origin
- line.
-
- ALT-T : Brings up a list of available taglines in the
- TAGLINES.MK file, either while reading messages
- or in the internal editor. Highlight the tagline
- you wish to manipulate and press RETURN. A
- tagline-editing window will then pop up. You have
- the following options while editing a tagline:
-
- ALT-B : Reverses the letters of the tagline.
-
- ALT-G : Changes the characters to Greek and High-Bit
- characters. These are not allowed in some networks,
- so you may want to check before entering a message
- with these taglines in them.
-
- ALT-C : This will "clean," or remove, the High-Bit characters
- in the tagline.
-
- ALT-U : Capitalizes all of the letters in the tagline.
-
- ALT-L : Makes all of the characters lower-case.
-
- ALT-M : Capitalizes the first letter of each word in the
- tagline.
-
-

-
-
- ──────────────────────[ USING THE INTERNAL EDITOR ]────────────────────

-
- ───────────────────────[ TEXT FILE CONFIG SETUP ]──────────────────────
-
- MKRead can be run with a text file configuration setup instead of
- using the BBS configuration files. This is mainly good for point
- setups, and it is much easier for a BBS SysOp to use the configuration
- setup internally for MKRead.
-
- To use the text configuration file, you will first have to define
- it in your environment variables by defining the path and configuration
- file MKRead will use. To use a configuration file named MARK.CFG, your
- variable would read:
-
- MKR=C:\BBS\MARK.CFG
-
- It must have the MKR= to indicate MKRead's search path.
-
- The configuration file is a plain text file following this
- format (See SAMPLE.TXT, included in this archive):
-
- Addr ## ##:##/##.## : This is your Fido-Style address and aka's,
- numbered 1 through 10.
-
- * EXAMPLE:
-
- Addr 1 1:110/290
- Addr 2 1:3625/457.0
-
- Origin ## (Text) : This will be your origin line, with up to
- 10 different ones, numbered 1 through 10.
-
- * EXAMPLE:
-
- Origin 1 Mythical Kingdom BBS!
- Origin 2 Mythical Kingdom - Home for MKBBS!
- Origin 3 The Owl's Roost! MKBeta!
-
- EchoLog dr:\path\ : This is a directory/filename to a
- Squish-Style echolog. Needed for Squish
- areas.
-
- SysOp First Last : Specifies the SysOp's name.
-
- NodeListPath Dr:\Path\ : This is the path to your Nodelist.
-
- BBSPath Dr:\Path\ : Specifies the path to the BBS directory.
- This is used as a default for storing files.
-
-
- ═════════════════════[ MKRead On-Line Message Editor ]═══════════ Page 13
-
-
- MsgArea ### : These define your message area's. The
- following information is represented here:
-
- Name AreaName - Describes the Message area.
-
- AreaId TypePath - Gives the AreaId for the message area.
-
- * AREAID'S:
-
- Squish - Spathname\filename
- Fido (*.MSG) - Fpathname\
- Hudson - H###pathname\
- Ezycom - E####PathName
- JAM Jpathname\filename
-
- UseAddr ## - Tells which address/AKA to use from the above
- definitions.
-
- UseOrig ## - Tells which origin line to use from the above
- definitions.
-
- NodeIdx File.Ext - This specifies which style nodelist index
- NodeInc File.Ext files and nodelist include files are to be
- used.
-
- * For MK BBS it would read:
-
- NodeIdx NodeIdx.MK
- NodeInc NodeInc.MK
-
- * For Remote Access, it would read:
-
- NodeIdx NodeIdx.RA
- NodeInc NodeInc.RA
-
- MailType Type - Tells which type of mail is in the message
- area, either Local, EchoMail, or NetMail.
-
- Allow MsgType - Tells which type of messages to allow in this
- area, either Public, Private, or Both.
-
- NoFido - Causes Tearlines-Originlines to NOT be added
- to messages entered in this area.
-
- AreaTag Text - This is the FidoNet AreaTag for the current
- area.
-
- UseAddr ## - Tells which address/AKA to use from the above
- definitions.
-
-
- ═════════════════════[ MKRead On-Line Message Editor ]═══════════ Page 14
-
-
- UseOrig ## - Tells which origin line to use from the above
- definitions.
-
- MailType Type - Tells which type of mail is in the message
- area, either Local, EchoMail, or NetMail.
-
- Allow MsgType - Tells which type of messages to allow in this
- area, either Public, Private, or Both.
-
- NoFido - Causes Tearlines-Originlines to NOT be added
- to messages entered in this area.
-
- Here are some examples of the message area configurations:
-
- MsgArea 001 : Indicates a Hudson message base called
- Name General Messages : "General Messages" as area 1. Allowing
- AreaId H001Z:\BBSC\RA\ : Private and Public mail, with origin
- UseAddr 1 : line 1 and address 1 added to each
- UseOrig 1 : message. This is a local message area.
- MailType Local
- Allow Both
- EndArea
-
- MsgArea 007 : This is an area called "BBS NetMail" and
- Name BBS NetMail : is located on area number 7 of a Squish
- AreaId SZ:\BBSC\SQ : message base located in the Z:\BBSC\
- UseAddr 1 : path. No FidoNet information is added
- UseOrig 1 : to mail in this area. The filenames will
- MailType NetMail : be necessary for Squish areas, but DO
- Allow Both : NOT put an extension on the filename.
- EchoLog Z:\BBS\Squish.log
- NoFido
- EndArea
-
- MsgArea 008 : This area uses the *.MSG format, with the
- Name NetMail : *.MSG files located in the path
- AreaId FZ:\BBSD\Mail\ : Z:\BBSD\MAIL\ directory. It is of NetMail
- UseAddr 1 : type.
- UseOrig 1
- MailType NetMail
- Allow Both
- EndArea
-
- MsgArea 010
- Name Ezy
- AreaId E0010C:\Ezy\MsgBase\
- UseAddr 1
- UserOrig 1
- MailType EchoMail
- Allow Public
- EndArea
-
- Anything entered with a ; at the beginning of the line will be

- ──────────────────────────────[ CREDITS ]──────────────────────────────
-
- There are several people who helped greatly during the development
- of MKRead and I'd like to thank a few of them here. First a big thanks
- to Andy Harris (1:3625/457) for all his work on the documentation and
- many suggestions on improvements in MKRead (MKRead started as just a
- "simple" message reader).
-
- Also thanks to Don Shanks (1:110/375) for his suggestions and help
- in uncovering several bugs through the beta versions, and providing
- plenty of good info that helped in tracking the problems down.
-
- Thanks to Ken Givens (1:124/2213) for helping out a lot in testing
- out the support for Ezycom.
-
- I also have to give some credit to the folks at Psychotronics BBS
- (1:3641/1) (one of the best message oriented BBS's I've seen).
- Following their various discussions on offline reading broadened my
- view of offline reading (although I never did get the part about the
- penguins).

- ────────────────────────────[ REGISTRATION ]───────────────────────────
-
- A registration fee is not required for these programs. I
- believe that the Bbs world is becoming too commercialized and
- distribute my programs as FREEWARE to fight against that trend.
- If you are a shareware author, consider sending me a registered
- version of your program in exchange for your use of this program.
-
- I would appreciate it if you would either fill in the form
- below and return it to me, or to drop me a postcard. This will
- help in measuring the usefulness of MKRead and help in determining
- how time is allocated between this and other projects.

- ─────────────────[ Running Under LAN Or Multi-Tasking ]─────────────────
-
- The SysOp can run MKRead while a user is logged onto their
- bulletin board and accessing the message base safely under these
- conditions as long as SHARE is loaded in the system. This makes MKRead
- easier to use because it is possible to leave the BBS running, thus
- giving uninterrupted service!
-
- A sample .PIF file is included for running MKRead under DESQview.
- Any questions about operating under DESQview can be directed at Andy
- Harris, either in the MK Echo or via netmail at FidoNet 1:3625/457.
- The author, Mark May, runs in a LAN environment. Efforts to contact
- him are given on page 3.
