-
- ==UPGRADING TO V4.XX OF LANtastic NETWORK OPERATING SYSTEM==
- The LANtastic INSTALL program is designed to provide easy upgrading to the
- newest version of LANtastic Network Operating System. INSTALL WILL
- PRESERVE YOUR EXISTING USER ACCOUNTS AND THE SHARED RESOURCES SET UP ON
- YOUR SERVERS. It will also detect if there is already a STARTNET.BAT file
- in your LANTASTI subdirectory and will not create a new STARTNET.BAT
- unless you delete the existing one.
-
- ==IMMEDIATE DESPOOLING AND CONTROLLING THE QUEUE==
- Any print jobs using immediate despooling cannot be controlled with the
- options in the NET printer queue control display until the Status field reads
- "DESPOOLING." Once the print job has this status, you can use any of
- the control options such as hold or delete.
-
- ==REMOVING MICROSOFT (R) WINDOWS (Tm) VIRTUAL PRINTER DEVICES==
- The LANtastic V4.1 Upgrade Manual says to remove both device=*VPD and
- device=*VCD from your SYSTEM.INI file. However, you should NOT remove the
- device=*VCD unless you have commands in your STARTNET.BAT or AUTOEXEC.BAT
- that include NET USE COM1 or COM2.
-
- Removing the device=*VCD from the SYSTEM.INI file could affect modem or
- mouse communications. If possible, you should NET USE LPT2 or LPT3 when
- you have a mouse or modem connected to your computer's local COM1 or COM2.
-
- ==Using Microsoft Smartdrive(Tm) with Artisoft's ALONE.EXE==
- If you are using Microsoft's Smartdrive (SMARTDRV.EXE) disk-caching
- program with Artisoft's ALONE program, disable Smartdrive's
- write-caching feature. Smartdrive will function correctly with ALONE only
- if you use read-caching only.
-
- ==Installing LANtastic V4.1 When You Have Windows 3.X==
- For a NEW LANtastic 4.1 or an EXISTING LANtastic 4.0 installation that is not
- using LANtastic for Windows 4.0, simply install LANtastic 4.1 by following the
- instructions in the LANtastic 4.1 Upgrade Manual. Then run the Windows SETUP
- program to select the LANtastic V4.1 network driver. If the NEW installation
- of LANtastic 4.1 WILL include LANtastic for Windows 4.0, you should do the
- following:
- 1. Install LANtastic 4.1
- 2. Install LANtastic for Windows 4.0
- 3. Run the LANtastic 4.1 INSTALL again from the distribution disk:
- A:INSTALL UNPACK LANTASTI.386 C:\LANTASTI
- If the EXISTING LANtastic 4.0 installation will include LANtastic for Windows
- V4.0 and you want to upgrade to LANtastic 4.1, make sure that LANtastic for
- Windows 4.0 is installed (but not running) before upgrading to LANtastic 4.1.
-
- ==UPGRADING THE BOOT IMAGE ON A SERVER==
- If you are using diskless workstations in your network, you must update the
- version of REDIR that you have placed in the boot image on a server. To do
- this, take the original boot image floppy that you created for the
- diskless workstations and copy the new version of REDIR. You can then use
- the Boot Image Maintenance option of the NET_MGR program to recreate the boot
- image. If you do not have your original boot disk, do the following:
-
- 1. On the boot server, make sure that Remote Booting is set to READ-WRITE
- in the Server Startup Parameters. If Remote booting is set to DISABLED
- or READ-ONLY, and SERVER is running, you must set Remote Booting to
- READ-WRITE then remove SERVER from memory with the REMOVE switch, or
- reboot the computer. The next time you run SERVER it will use the new
- Remote Booting setting.
- 2. Boot up a diskless workstation, and do not detach it's A: drive from
- the server.
- 3. Connect one of the workstation's drives to the server drive or
- directory that contains the new version of REDIR. For example:
-
- NET USE S: \\SERVER1\C-DRIVE
-
- 4. From the workstation, copy the new version of REDIR to the A: drive.
- For example:
-
- COPY S:\LANTASTI\REDIR.EXE A:
-
- Since this drive is still connected to the boot image on the server, it
- will copy the new version of REDIR over the older version stored there.
- The new copy of REDIR will be run the next time a diskless workstation
- uses this image to boot up.
-
- ==Corrections==
- In Appendix C of the LANtastic V4.1 Upgrade Manual, the text erroneously
- states that a user must have the S privilege to use the NET_MGR BACKUP,
- RESTORE, SET and SHOW commands. You do not need to have this privilege to
- issue these commands.
-
- The NET_MGR SAVE and RESTORE commands now have the /P= (password)
- switch. This allows you to save or restore a control directory that is
- password protected. For example:
-
- NET_MGR /p=secret BACKUP \lantasti.net savefile
- NET_MGR /p=secret RESTORE savefile \lantasti.net
-
- Refer to the LANtastic NOS V4.1 Upgrade Manual for more information on
- using the new NET_MGR command line interface.
-
- ==Omission==
- In Appendix B of the LANtastic V4.1 Upgrade Manual, the NET USER command
- does not appear. The command is:
-
- NET USER/DISABLE username password adapter#
-
- This command sets the default username, password and adapter number to be
- used for automatic log in to servers.
-
- /DISABLE This switch means do not set a default user;
- instead, prevent autologins from being attempted.
-
- The following arguments refer to:
- username Username to use for autologins
- password Password to use for autologins
- adapter# Optional adapter number to log in through. If not
- specified, all adapters will be attempted.
