- What is Echomail?
-
-
- Echomail is a very broad topic with many answers to it.
- This section is an attempt to give you an understanding of what
- echomail is and how it can benefit you.
-
- Echomail is the process of "ECHOing" a particular message
- base from one computer system to many others. For those of you
- who remember BBSing a few years back, you might recall that
- your favorite local BBS carried several different topics on
- their system. We generally knew everyone who entered messages
- there and had seen them around on other systems in our local
- calling area. Looking back at that time you will also remember
- that the message traffic was generally low and it always seemed
- like the same people were always entering the messages.
-
- Since most people who were entering messages were on about
- the same skill level as you, when you wanted to try something
- new no one really had an answer for you. If you got stuck
- somewhere, there was not really that much help from the people
- in your local calling area. Of course, there are experts in
- every city and many who do know what they are doing. You found
- the same people answering the majority of the questions. Most
- of the time these people were the SysOps, the ones who had been
- through the toughest times with their PC, staying up many
- nights trying to solve a particular problem. But the traffic of
- most cities was such that you could read through any of the new
- messages daily in less than 20 minutes. Thus, the volume of
- help and answers was very minimal. You might also remember a
- message base created for a particular hobby, such as baseball
- cards or genealogy. On a local level these message bases would
- again be very limited and the amount of traffic minimal.
-
- Echomail started out on a local level. Several local
- systems decided that they wanted to replicate the messages on
- their system on other systems in town, to allow the readers of
- any of the participating systems to reply to questions or
- comments which were entered on any of the other systems. This
- concept turned out well for several reasons. The user could
- enter a message on one of the systems for a problem he had and
- it would be duplicated on the other systems in town. This
- eliminated the need for him to have to call every one of the
- individual bulletin boards to enter his question so that he
- could have a better possibility of someone answering his
- problem. This idea worked out so well that it went national,
- and later worldwide. Soon people from all over the world were
- "echoing" their messages to each other, creating a very large
- amount of volume in each of the message bases.
-
- Today there are literally thousands of different
- conferences (message bases) which deal with hundreds of
- different topics. You have your choice of what you want to
- carry on your BBS. In some of these conferences there are over
- 500 messages entered daily from people all over the world. They
- then appear on your system in the middle of the night and give
- both you and your users access to lots of reading material that
- pertain to the particular topic of interest. These message
- bases are nothing compared to your local message base because
- you do not have the volume of people participating. Echomail
- allows you or your callers to reach a potential audience of
- thousands of people.
-
- Imagine that you are a new user and you want to know how
- to format a floppy in one of your drives (obviously you already
- know how to do this but I wanted to pick a topic we could all
- relate to). You could enter a message in the DOS/Help
- conference and overnight your message will be available on
- hundreds of other systems. The next morning your message is
- read by thousands of people. Out of all those people, would you
- not suspect that one of them knew the answer to this question?
- Yes, they would! In fact, if you were to really ask such a
- question you could very well get over 50 messages from people
- all over the world giving you detailed information on how and
- why you should format your disks. This is what is so great
- about echomail: it gives you answers, answers you might not
- ever have gotten were you merely dealing at a local level.
-
- Echomail is not just for people who need help. It also has
- other topical areas, such as discussion/debate echoes, sports
- related echoes, hobby related echoes and, of course, computer
- related echoes. Now that you know what echomail is let me tell
- you a little bit on how it actually works. The system you
- read/enter mail on is somewhere in a chain ("network" is a more
- accurate term). It works a lot like the diagram below. This is
- just a very small diagram to simulate how it works but it will
- get the basic idea across. For a true picture of how many nodes
- are in a network you could safely add about 100-200 more of the
- boxes into the diagram. This simple diagram works like this.
-
- o 1:14/0 is the "hub" (Main distributor for a particular area)
- o 1:140/0 is a smaller "hub" for a smaller geographical area
- o 1:281/0 is a Network Coordinator (the "hub" for a particular
- network)
- o 1:281/10 and 1:281/20 are both nodes in the 281 Network.
-
- The typical path for mail coming i=n=t=o the network would
- follow the path 1:14/0 to 1:140/0 to 1:281/0 then to 1:281/10
- and 20. The path for mail leaving the network works in an
- identical fashion; however, the direction of the flow is
- reversed.
-
- As an example, imagine that someone on the BBS 1:281/20
- enters a message in the Baseball Cards echo. That system will
- send that very message to 1:281/0. 1:281/0 will then send the
- message to 1:281/10 and 1:140/0. 1:140/0 will, in turn, send
- that same message to 1:14/0 and 1:14/0 will then distribute it
- to all its hubs, effectively putting that message on every one
- of the systems in the network. This is what echomail is and how
- it works in a nutshell.

- What is GOMail?
-
-
- GOMail is a message tosser for the type of echomail system
- previously described. It basically tosses Fido formatted
- packets that are received by a Wildcat! or Mainline BBS. It
- also receives packets and puts them into your Wildcat! or
- Mainline message databases so that you and your users may read
- and reply to them.
-
- GOMail works in conjunction with a "front end" (also
- called a "mailer") to get mail to and from your system. GOMail
- has been thoroughly tested with two front ends, D'Bridge and
- Front Door. GOMail was originally released on October 7, 1992
- and has since been completely rewritten to meet the demands of
- Wildcat! version 4.xx. GOMail will continue to be enhanced. The
- material in this document describes the features and setup
- options of GOMail.
-
- Here is a screen display of GOMail during the tossing of
- an incoming packet of mail.

- AREAS.BBS File
-
-
- The AREAS.BBS file is an ASCII file which you create with
- either a plain ASCII editor or through the facilities of
- GOEDIT.EXE. Under OPTIONS there is a choice for AREAS.BBS
- editor; this is discussed more completely later. AREAS.BBS is
- the file which tells GOMail which systems to send outgoing mail
- to and which conference areas to place incoming messages into.
- Suppose there are four people sending their messages to each
- other's BBS systems. Then we would have a little network such
- as the example below. Each node has their own individual
- number. As you can see below there are four addresses: 1:14/1,
- 1:281/2, 1:281/10 and 1:281/20. Mail will come in from 1:14/1
- (he is the "HUB" and all mail flows through this system). My
- address is 1:281/2 and I am a hub to my local calling area.
- Thus, I give 1:281/10 and 1:281/20 mail from 1:14/1. There are
- some conferences that 281/10 may want that I do not wish to
- carry on my BBS. If you have an area like this then that is
- referred to as a PASSTHRU echo. This means that you will pick
- up the echo for your node but you will not post it for reading
- on your own BBS system.
-
-
- ------------
- | 1:14/1 |
- ------------
- \
- \ ------------
- \| 1:281/2 |
- ------------
- / \
- ------------ / \ ------------
- | 1:281/10 |/ \| 1:281/20 |
- ------------ ------------
-
-
- The final form of the AREAS.BBS file for this fictitious
- network might look like this editing:
-
- The Software Connection Topeka, KS 8 Gigs # Mike Ortiz
- 3 TOPEKA 1:14/1 281/10 20
- 4 HUMOR 1:14/1 281/10 20
- 5 CATSCAN 1:14/1 281/10 20
- 6 STTNG 1:14/1 281/10 20
- P DOORWARE 1:14/1 281/10
-
- The above is what your AREAS.BBS file should resemble. The
- first line is the name of your BBS. Although this line is not
- used by GOMail, it is provided to conform to standard AREAS.BBS
- file format. Therefore, you could put anything on this line you
- prefer. Please note that the pound sign (#) is used on that
- first line to indicate the SysOp of the BBS. The second line
- refers to the "TOPEKA" echo. This echo will be tossed into
- Wildcat!'s conference #3. Any mail entered into this conference
- will also be forwarded to nodes 1:281/10 and 1:281/20 (this is
- for down link purposes) and also be sent to 1:14/1. While
- entering the down link node information, you do not have to
- specify the complete address if it is in the same zone and net
- as the entry prior to it. Therefore, the two lines below mean
- the same thing:
-
- 3 TOPEKA 1:14/1 281/10 20
- 3 TOPEKA 1:14/1 1:281/10 1:281/20
-
-
- GOEDIT.EXE
-
- GOEDIT.EXE is the control program for GOMail. GOEDIT
- creates a file called GOMAIL.DAT, which is read as a
- configuration file by GOMail. Typing GOEDIT at the DOS prompt
- while in the GOMAIL subdirectory will initiate the program and
- produce a screen with the following header.
-

- In the following selections, each of the choices on the
- above menu selection bar are explained. We begin with the PATHS

- explained in the previous section, the GOMAIL.DAT file.
- GOMAIL.DAT is the configuration file read by GOMail when
- GOMAIL.EXE is started. Selecting the PATHS option on the main

- ╚═════════════════════════════ Paths To Files ══════════════════════════╝
-
-
-
- Drive/Path to your BBS Home directory :
-
- For MainLine BBS systems this would be your C:\ML\
- directory and for Wildcat! systems this would
- commonly be your C:\WC40\ directory (or wherever
- WILDCAT.EXE is stored).
-
- Where is your Netmail Directory :
-
- This is the subdirectory which your front end uses
- for holding its netmail messages, such as 1.MSG. In
- D'Bridge this would commonly be your \DB\MESSAGES\
- subdirectory. For Front Door it is \FD\NETMAIL\.
- Please bear in mind these are just the defaults that
- the programs use. If you called your subdirectories
- something else then you need to enter the correct
- path name. An easy way to find the correct
- subdirectory is to go to the directory you think it
- is and type in DIR at the DOS prompt. If you see
- several files that have numbers with the MSG
- extension (again, such as 1.MSG), then you found the
- correct subdirectory. Enter that path here.
-
- Where is your outbound files dir :
-
- For D'Bridge systems this is your \DB\QUEUE
- subdirectory that D'Bridge creates by default. GOMail
- will not send message attachments if you are using
- D'Bridge. Instead, GOMail will address the outgoing
- packet in D'Bridge's format, place it in D'Bridge's
- outbound files subdirectory, and D'Bridge will
- automatically pick the file up and send it according
- to your routing. If you are using Front Door then
- your setup should be like that described in the
- following paragraph.
-
- For Front Door, this is a directory that your front
- end does not even know about. I suggest that you make
- a directory called GOATTACH off your mailer directory
- so that you do not conflict with files that your
- mailer will need/use. GOMail will maintain this file
- area and will put files in there and delete them as
- mail gets sent and processed.
-
- Where is your inbound files directory :
-
- This is the subdirectory that all your mail goes into
- when you receive it. For D'Bridge systems this will
- usually be your \DB\FILES\ subdirectory (default) and
- for Front Door the default would be \FD\FILES\.
- Again, if you used something other than the default
- subdirectory names when installing your mailer, then
- you will need to specify something different here.
-
- Where is your BadEcho directory :
-
- This will be a directory where messages for an echo
- that is not defined in your AREAS.BBS file will be
- sent until you either (a) define the area or (b)
- delete the messages.
-
- Where is your DupMsg directory :
-
- GOMail will copy any message it determines is a
- duplicate to the DupMsg subdirectory, provided you
- have selected that option under the MAILER selection
- on the main selection bar. Duplicates will be
- discussed later. The purpose of setting up a path is
- to permit you to review the message and assure that
- it is in fact a duplicate.
-
- Where is your GOMail work directory :
-
- This is the complete path to a work subdirectory you
- would like GOMail to use. This can be just a drive
- (ex. C:\ or a directory C:\WORK\). Note that a
- trailing backslash is always required. Should you
- forget to add the backslash, GOEdit will
- automatically append the backslash before the program
- saves the GOMAIL.DAT file.
-
-
- MAILER MENU SELECTION
-
- This is perhaps the most comprehensive section of GOEDIT.
- Here you will enter the various features of your BBS system.
- There are 25 important items for you to complete. We will
- examine each one.
-
- When you select the MAILER option on the main selection
- bar, you are presented with the following window. You may use
- your up and down arrow keys to move vertically within this
- window. Other choices are shown by arrowing down beneath the
- last entry shown below.

-
- BBS Type
-
- At this time GOMail only supports two BBS types,
- MainLine and Wildcat! (version 4.xx for this version
- of GOMail). If there is sufficient demand, other
- bulletin board software packages will be considered.
- When used with version 4.xx of Wildcat! you should
- see the default value of WC.4x here.
-
-
- Maximum BBS Messages/Conf (MainLine Only)
-
- This option is for MailLine systems only. It tells GOMail
- how many messages it should keep per conference. Ignore
- this entry if you are not running MainLine. It has no
- application to a Wildcat! system.
-
-
- Notify User of New Messages
-
- This option will almost always be enabled (the Y
- selection). GOMail will toss faster if this is turned
- off (the N selection) but it would not let you or
- your users know that there is mail waiting for you or
- them during the log-in sequence. The only time this
- would be set to N would be if your BBS had only Read-
- Only message conferences (a rather unlikely BBS).
-
-
- Netmail Echo Conference
-
- This is the conference number of your netmail
- conference. It must be the same number that you have
- designated in MAKEWILD as the netmail conference. You
- should have only one netmail conference. In most
- cases, only you, the SysOp, will have access to it,
- unless you are allowing your users to send netmail.
- GOMail will send netmail out either in normal or
- crash mode.
-
-
- Lock Count
-
- This is the maximum number of messages that may be
- imported into the BBS during a single lock setting
- while tossing. GOMail will lock the BBS database and
- not unlock it until GOMail either (a) changes
- conferences during the tossing or (b) the number of
- messages tossed into the current conference exceeds
- the value specified here. Generally you will not have
- to worry about this number, since messages within a
- packet vary so much. But should you find your BBS
- system locking a conference too long while GOMail is
- tossing into it, then decrease this number to suit
- your needs.
-
-
- Auto Purge Message Database
-
- This option will make GOMail run a little slower but
- it will maintain your duplicate database at the
- predefined size set in MAKEWILD. If this option is
- turned off then your MSG*.DAT message database can be
- larger than defined, until a GOMail PURGE is run
- manually to resize the MSG*.DAT files. At the present
- time, this function is inoperative. However, you
- should make a decision about this setting, so that
- when the program is upgraded you will not have to
- make further changes. We recommend that you set this
- to N unless you are short on disk space. Then run
- GOMAIL PURGE as an event in D'Bridge or as part of
- your nightly maintenance routine. Again, this
- function is inoperative at the time of this writing.
-
-
- Save Seenby Lines in BBS
-
- This option will allow you to have the conference TAG
- of echomail messages as well as the message SEENBY
- lines imported into your BBS message so that you may
- track duplicates or a message's path. We recommend
- that you set this option to N unless you are having
- problems with your echomail.
-
-
- Max Open Conferences
-
- This number is the maximum number of conferences
- allowed to be open at one time during the tossing
- operation. This allows GOMail to open several message
- databases at a time. With the right setting you will
- not need to sort the packet to get the maximum speed
- anymore. Think in terms of file handles. The correct
- value here is determined by the following equation
- experiment.
-
- This maximum value is also a function of available
- RAM, processor speed, operating system (viz., OS/2,
- DESQview or straight DOS), etc. Too large a value
- will ultimately slow things down for your particular
- hardware configuration.
-
- You need to reserve 20 of the file handles for DOS
- functions and then you will need 2 file handles for
- each conference you want to have open. Therefore,
- assuming you had FILES=40 in your CONFIG.SYS file,
- 40-20 = 20 and 20/2 = 10. That means 10 would be what
- you want to put here. GOMail will check if you go
- over the bounds and, if you do, when it runs it will
- write in the log that you have that value set to
- high.
-
- Allow Crash Netmail from BBS
-
- This option allows you to specify if any caller to
- your BBS may send crash netmail from within the BBS.
- If this option is set to NO then no crash mail will
- be allowed. If it is set to YES then anyone with
- netmail access may make your system send out a
- netmail message immediately, even during the most
- expensive telephone calling periods. We urge you to
- carefully consider the ramifications of this and to
- use Echo Routed Netmail in your mailer for
- transmitting messages your users enter in your
- netmail message area.
-
-
- Network Type
-
- Press the space bar until your network type appears.
- If you are running a single line system then choose
- the SINGLE LINE option. If you are running under any
- version of Novell (except Novell Lite) then you
- should pick NOVELL. All other network types,
- including Novell Lite, will use DOS SHARE.
-
-
- Your Primary Zone Number
-
- Enter your primary zone number here. This will be the
- zone of your default address (such as 1 for Zone 1).
- You may have alias addresses as well, but they will
- not be entered in this area and should be entered in
- the Alias screen instead.
-
-
- Your Primary Net Number
-
- Enter your primary net number here. This will be the
- Net of your default address, such as 83. As with zone
- numbers, you may have alias addresses too but they
- will not be entered in this area and should be
- entered in the Alias screen instead.
-
- Your Primary Node Number
-
- Enter your Primary Node number here. This will be the
- Node of your default address. As with zone numbers,
- you may have alias addresses too but they will not be
- entered in this area and should be entered in the
- Alias screen instead.
-
-
- Your Primary Point Number
-
- Enter your Primary Point number here. This will be
- the Point of your default address. As with zone
- numbers, you may have alias addresses too but they
- will not be entered in this area and should be

-
-
- Maximum Number of Dups in Dup Database
-
- This is the maximum the duplicates database (the
- files DUPMAIL.DAT and DUPMAIL.IX) should get. If Auto
- Purge Dup database is turned off then this can get
- larger than that, and continue to grow until a GOMAIL
- DR is run from the command line (or batch file). An
- average setting for this is 1000 for every 5000
- messages tossed in per week. If, for example, your
- system was tossing 20,000 messages per week, you'd
- set this to 4,000.
-
-
- Save Dups in *.MSG Format
-
- If this option is set to Y then GOMail will save any
- message it feels is a duplicate in *.MSG format in
- the designated duplicate message subdirectory. This
- is to allow you to review any messages considered
- duplicates for yourself to make sure they are in fact
- duplicate messages. This option is really meant for
- debugging. It will allow you to save any messages
- that GOMAIL thinks is a duplicate into the DUPMSG
- directory in FIDO MSG format. If this option is
- turned on (with a Y setting) then you will want to
- watch the DUPMSG directory closely because it can
- slow down GOMail if it gets too large.
-
-
- Forward packets not destined to this address
-
- If this option is set to Y then GOMail will forward
- any packets that are not addressed to you and forward
- them on to who there are defined to. You may or may
- not wish to implement this option. Consider the
- following scenario: another party delivers some
- echomail to you and it is not addressed to your
- primary node or to any of your alias addresses. If
- you set this option to Y then those messages would be
- forwarded on to the node (which could be a long
- distance call!). If you have this option set to N
- then the messages get vaporized. We recommend setting
- this to N.
-
-
- Maximum Number of Messages per Packet
-
- This is the maximum number of messages you want in
- one packet before GOMail initiates a new packet. We
- recommend that you limit this number to 1000, since
- some tossers cannot handle packets with more than
- 1000 messages in them.
-
-
- Default Archive Type
-
- Enter your default archive type here. If you specify
- ZIP then a=l=l of your outgoing mail will be
- compressed using PKZIP, unless you have a particular
- node setup with an Archiver override. This is the
- preferred method. Make certain that the party to whom
- you are sending your packets understands the archive
- format you will be using. While ARC is the "standard"
- in Fidonet, ZIP will result is significantly smaller
- packets (better compression) and reduce transmission
- times. This latter consideration is particularly
- important if your are sending packets via a long
- distance call. We have no interest in engaging in
- "archiver wars" but would be remiss if we failed to
- point out that ARC results in much larger packets and
- extended transmission times. That is important if you
- call long distance to get your mail.
-
-
- Create .MSG file for Netmail
-
- This option allows you to have any messages that are
- sent to you via netmail to not only be tossed into
- your BBS' Netmail Conference but to also be placed
- into your frontend mailer. If you reply to netmail
- messages in your frontend then you will want this
- option set to Y.
-
- Mailer Type
-
- Press the space bar until your type of mailer
- appears. At the present time, the only mailer types
- fully tested with GOMail are D'Bridge and Frontdoor.
- If you are running a Binkley system it is possible to
- use GOMail successfully, because many have done so.
- However, the authors have never personally tested
- GOMail with Binkley. If you would be willing to tell
- us what we need to do then we will probably be able
- to make GOMail work effortlessly with Binkley. Please
- contact us by netmail if you wish to pursue this
- experiment with Binkley.
-
-
- Kill Empty (Null) messages
-
- If this option is set to Y then any empty messages
- that you receive will be deleted. This is the
- recommended setting.
-
-
- Maximum K-Bytes in Outbound Archive
-
- This option allows you to limit how large GOMail will
- make the outbound archive before creating a new file
- name.
-
- Note: D'Bridge systems should have this
- option set to 0, since D'Bridge can only
- have one file in the queue directory
- addressed to a particular system. In most
- cases this will be set to 0 because it is
- faster to send one 800k packet rather than
- four 200k packets.
-
-
- Add Unknown Confs as
-
- Pressing the space bar will permit you to cycle
- through the following choices: NONE, PASSTHRU, NEXT
- CONF, VAPORIZE. These choices determine how GOMail
- will treat messages it receives which do not belong
- in any of the existing conferences listed in the
- AREAS.BBS file. This is an important section for
- those users receiving packets via Planet Connect or
- other nontraditional ways.
-
- NONE The None option simply tells GOEDIT to not
- automatically add conferences as messages
- from such conferences arrive. That requires
- you, the SysOp, to manually add the
- conferences to the AREAS.BBS file for
- processing by GOMail. Messages which arrive
- and do not have a conference designated for
- them in AREAS.BBS will appear in the
- \GOMAIL\BADMSG subdirectory.
-
- PASSTHRU If you are serving as a hub, there is
- little likelihood that you will want to
- carry on your hard disk all of the echos
- that you are sending to your downlinks on
- your BBS. PASSTHRU by definition means that
- messages in a given conference are coming
- in from your hub, and "pass through" your
- node to your downlinks. By setting this
- option to PASSTHRU, all new conferences
- found in an inbound packet will be tagged
- as PASSTHRU.
-
- NEXTCONF This option is used for testing only and
- should not be used during normal operation.
- When conferences are found in an inbound
- packet that are unknown to your system, and
- this option is set to NEXTCONF, GOMail will
- automatically assign the conference to the
- highest number conference found in your
- AREAS.BBS + 1. If this option was set
- during normal operation, there is a
- potential for echos to be tossed into areas
- that are defined in your BBS as local
- message areas.
-
- VAPORIZE This option is for SysOps who are getting
- messages from a satellite service, such as
- Planet Connect. With these types of
- services, a SysOp has no choice as to which
- conferences are coming to him. If this
- option is set to Vaporize, all conferences
- found in an inbound packet that are unknown
- to your system, will be tagged as VAPORIZE.
- Thereafter, when a message comes to your
- system in one of the Vaporize conferences,
- the message will not be saved on your
- system or forwarded to any other systems.
- Hence the term "Vaporized."

- Note: if you are running GOEdit for the first time,
- this option will not function. GOMail will create the
- conference databases the first time that it is run
- and will make any modifications any time you modify
- the AREAS.BBS file. All changes are made directly to
- the AREAS.BBS file. GOCONF.DAT and GOCONF.IX are the

- AREAS.BBS file internally. This is to allow you
- maximum flexibility, no limit on conferences
- available, and low memory overhead. You can highlight

- When I press the F10 function key, in this example, I

- Another thing I could have done was to simply edit the line

-
-
- CHANGING THE CONFERENCE'S ORIGIN LINE
-
- You have the ability to change your default origin line on
- a per-conference level if you wish. Changing it here will only
- change it for t=h=a=t particular conference. If you modify your
- AREAS.BBS file then you will need to re-enter custom origin
- lines in here, since changing your AREAS.BBS file will cause
- the database to be rebuilt and any changes would then be lost.
- For that reason, if you are repeatedly adding or dropping
- conferences, we encourage you to use the same default origin
- line for each conference, as is shown in the example. However,
- if you seldom/never change your AREAS.BBS file, then you will
- not have to make many revisions. The choice is yours.
-
- This option will be used to make a special origin line for
- a particular conference. To save it after changing it, simply
- press the ESCape key. That will save it and return you to the
- list of all conferences.
-
- Please note that GOEDIT re-creates a new AREAS.BBS from
- this procedure. It will strip all comment lines (those preceded
- with a semicolon) and place the conferences in the new
- AREAS.BBS in conference order. The AREAS.BBS file is
- automatically re-created because there is a likelihood that the
- conference number was changed.

- Placing a semi-colon (;) at the start of any line in the
- AREAS.BBS file has the effect of "rem'ing" out that line. Any
- line starting with a semi-colon will be ignored by GOMail
- during its processing phases. Again, please note that these
- comment lines are automatically removed when you use the Edit
- Conference feature and GOEDIT re-creates the AREAS.BBS file, as
- described earlier in this document.
-
-
- Import FIDONET.NA section Sub-Menu Selection
-
-
- GOMail is furnished with a copy of FIDONET.NA and
- FIDONET.NO. The FIDONET.NA file contains a listing of Fidonet
- Echo conferences and a short description of each of them. The
- beginning of the file looks something like this:
-
- !CHINESE General topic chatting in Chinese
- 10TH_AMD 10th Amendment, right and powers of the
- 12_STEPS 12 Steps Discussion
- 4DOS 4DOS ECHO
- 4DOS_TC 4DOS and Take Command Support Conference/Echo
- 60S_70S_PROGROCK 60's/70's Progressive Rock Music Echo
- 80XXX Assembly language programming (Intel CPUs
- ABLED disABLED Users Information Exchange.
- ABLED_ATHLETE Abled Athletes
-
- The FIDONET.NO file lists echo conferences which are not
- (seemingly) operational. Here is an example of the contents of
- FIDONET.NO
-
- AMIGA_LC (not in EchoList since 3/1/95)
- AMIGA_PDREVIEW (not in EchoList since 3/1/95)
- ASTRONOMY (not in EchoList since 3/1/95)
- EDUCATOR (not in EchoList since 3/1/95)
- HOMEPOWR (not in EchoList since 3/1/95)
- HOMESCHL (not in EchoList since 3/1/95)
- LATINO (not in EchoList since 2/1/95)
- LV_GAMBLER (not in EchoList since 3/1/95)
-
- When you first begin using GOMail, and have completed your
- AREAS.BBS file and otherwise set up GOMail, you need to let
- GOMail create its GOCONF.* files. This is easily done by
- exiting GOEdit (use the "Save Config" option under the FILE
- choice on the menu bar) and type GOMAIL SYNC at the DOS prompt.
- This will allow GOMail to create the GOCONF.DAT and GOCONF.IX
- files on its own, as well as set the last tossed pointers so
- that you don't export your entire message database to your hub.
-
- Once you have run GOMAIL SYNC successfully, re-enter
- GOEdit by typing GOEDIT at the DOS prompt. Then select Options
- on the menu bar and choose Import FIDONET.NA. That will cause
- the following screen to be temporarily overlaid:
-
- ╒═══════════════ Importing FIDONET.NA═══════════════╕
- │ 12% │
- │ █████░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░ │
- ╘═══════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
-
- The progress monitor will tell you how much has been
- imported. Faster computers do this in less time. Once
- completed, choose Edit Conference on the pull down menu and you
- will see that GOEdit has inserted conference descriptions.
-
- GOEdit will maintain these descriptions in a database, so
- that in the future, any echomail conferences that are added to
- your AREAS.BBS file will have a description. This feature is
- extremely helpful when you are an EchoMail HUB, or are using a
- FIDONET Satellite service, such as Planet Connect (TM), and are
- adding new conferences as Vaporize, or Passthru. After
- conferences are added to your AREAS.BBS file, by GOMail, you
- will be able to view the description for the new conference to
- determine if you wish to add this conference to the BBS.

- ╚═════════════════ Please Define your Archivers ══════════════════╝
-
- The archivers definition is important to GOMail's
- operation. If the archivers are not set up correctly then
- GOMail will simply not run correctly. If you have one type of
- archiver not defined then GOMail will not be able to unpack
- mail if you receive mail of that type. All of the archivers
- should use the default parameters which you will see when you
- enter the archivers area. Simply change the path for the
- archiver's definition.
-
- Each of these fields will be filled in automatically by
- GOEdit when the archivers menu selection is chosen from the
- main menu. This field will only be filled in if it is blank.
- The field starts out being blank the first time GOEdit is run.
- If you wish to make GOEdit search the path again and fill in
- the information correctly, then you must blank the field by
- hitting Ctrl+Y on the field, close the archiver window and,
- finally, reopen it. You can override the selection that GOEdit
- puts here by just typing over it and inserting what you prefer.
-
- Note: Do not change the parameters that
- are appended to the end, since
- these are very important to
- GOMail's operation.
-
- ZIP Compression Utility
-
- Place the Drive\Path\Filename of your ZIP compression
- utility where your PKZIP.EXE file resides. GOEdit
- will verify that the program exists where you have
- specified when you exit GOEdit. Any needed parameters
- should be placed after the filename. You want to use
- the options that will move the files while they're
- being compressed. In PKZIP this would be -M.
-
- ZIP De-Compression Utility
-
- Place the Drive\Path\Filename of your ZIP
- decompression utility where your PKUNZIP.EXE file
- resides. GOEdit will verify that the program exists
- where you have specified when you exit. You should
- specify the option to Overwrite if the same filename
- exists to prevent PKUNZIP from asking the question
- Overwrite (Y/N)? The option for PKUNZIP to overwrite
- without asking is -O.
-
- ARJ Compression Utility
-
- Place the Drive\Path\Filename of your ARJ compression
- utility where your ARJ.EXE file resides. GOEdit will
- verify that the program exists where you have
- specified when you exit. The parameters should be
- placed after the filename. You want to use the
- options that will move the files while they're being
- compressed. In ARJ this would be M.
-
- ARJ De-Compression Utility
-
- Place the Drive\Path\Filename of your ARJ
- decompression utility this will most likely be where
- your ARJ.EXE file resides. GOEdit will verify that
- the program exists where you have specified when you
- exit. You should specify and option to Overwrite if
- the same filename exists this will prevent ARJ from
- asking the question Overwrite (Y/N) ? The Option for
- ARJ to overwrite without asking is -U -Y.
-
- ARC Compression Utility
-
- Place the Drive\Path\Filename of your ARC compression
- utility where your PKPAK.EXE file resides. GOEdit
- will verify that the program exists where you have
- specified when you exit. The parameters should be
- placed after the filename. You want to use the
- options that will move the files while they're being
- compressed. In PKPAK this would be -M.
-
- ARC De-Compression Utility
-
- Place the Drive\Path\Filename of your ARC
- decompression utility. If you use PKUNPAK.EXE, this
- will be where your PKUNPAK.EXE file resides. GOEdit
- will verify that the program exists where you have
- specified when you exit GOEDIT. You should specify
- the option to Overwrite if the same filename exists
- this will prevent PKUNPAK from asking the question
- Overwrite (Y/N)? The Option for PKUNPAK to overwrite
- without asking is -RX.
-
- PAK Compression Utility
-
- Place the Drive\Path\Filename of your PAK compression
- utility and where your PAK.EXE file resides. GOEdit
- will verify that the program exists where you have
- specified when you exit. The parameters should be
- placed after the filename. You want to use the
- options that will move the files while they are being
- compressed. In PAK this would be /M.
-
- PAK De-Compression Utility
-
- Place the Drive\Path\Filename of your ARC
- decompression utility. If you are using PKUNPAK, this
- will be where your PKUNPAK.EXE file resides. GOEdit
- will verify that the program exists where you have
- specified when you exit. You should specify an option
- to Overwrite if the same filename exists to prevent
- PAK from asking the question Overwrite (Y/N)? The
- Option for PKPAK to overwrite without asking is /WA.
-
- LHA & LZH Compression Utility
-
- Place the Drive\Path\Filename of your LHA & LZH
- compression utility where your LHA.EXE file resides.
- GOEdit will verify that the program exists where you
- have specified when you exit. The parameters should
- be placed after the filename. You want to use the
- options that will move the files while they're being
- compressed. In LHA this would be /M.
-
- LHA & LZH De-Compression Utility
-
- Place the Drive\Path\Filename of your LHA & LZH
- decompression utility. Generally, this will be where
- your LHA.EXE file resides. GOEdit will verify that
- the program exists where you have specified when you
- exit. You should specify an option to Overwrite if
- the same filename exists to prevent LHA from asking
- the question Overwrite (Y/N)? The E /M options for
- LHA.EXE permit the overwrite.
-
-
- ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION
-
- If there is an archiver which you choose not to use (such
- as the ZOO archiver) you simply place the commands for an
- existing archiver program in it place. Please note that if you
- do this and you later receive a mail packet archived with such
- a program, it will, of course, not be unarchived. As an example
- of this alternative to getting the correct archiver program, we
- have listed the use of PKZIP/PKUNZIP for the ZOO archiver in
- the screen display earlier given. A better solution is to
- obtain all the needed archiver programs.
-
-
- IMPORT/EXPORT MENU SELECTION
-
-
- Pressing the ENTER key or clicking the mouse on the
- Import/Export selection on the menu bar will display:
-
- ╒══════════════════════╕
- │ Import Configuration │
- │ Export Configuration │
- ╘══════════════════════╛
-
-
- This import/export feature is provided to allow easy
- upgrading from one version of GOMAIL to the next. In the past,
- when new versions of programs were released you either had to
- run a conversion program or re-type the information into
- GOEdit. The Export option will allow you to export your
- configuration from a=n=y version of GOMail and import it into
- another version. When you export your file you may call it
- anything that you wish, provided it is a valid DOS file name.
- You may also specify a drive and directory if you wish. If you
- do not specify the drive and directory then the file will be
- created in the current (default) directory. Always export your
- configuration and save it in a safe place, against the outside
- chance your GOMAIL.DAT file should become corrupted for some
- reason. You are thereby reassured that you will not have to
- re-key the information into GOEdit. The Import option works in
- much the same fashion. It will ask you for a file name to
- import. Once again you may enter the complete drive and
- directory or use the default values of the current drive and
- directory.
-
-
- FILE MENU SELECTION
-
-
- Pressing the ENTER key or clicking the mouse on the File
- selection on the menu bar will display:
-
- ╒═════════════════╕
- │ Save Config │
- │ Shell to Dos │
- │ Exit (No Save) │
- ╘═════════════════╛
-
-
- Save Config
-
- The Save Config option will allow you to save the
- current configuration into a non-readable binary
- file. You cannot see or edit the information in this
- type of file, but it is excellent for configuration
- programs because it takes only one pass to read in
- the data. ASCII configuration files require a read
- instruction for each line. The filename will always
- be called GOMAIL.DAT.
-
-
- Shell to DOS
-
- This option simply permits you to shell out to DOS to
- attend to whichever functions you prefer. Type EXIT
- to return to the GOEDIT program.
-
- Exit (No Save)
-
- The Exit (No Save) option will allow you to abandon
- any changes and to exit the configuration program. If
- you choose this option then nothing is changed.
-
- GOMail will auto-match zones for you, meaning that if you
- are in multiple zones then you do not have to do anything
- except your zone alias in GOEdit. If a message is entered in
- your secondary zone conference, GOMail will then automatically
- forward it to the different net/zone. GOMail looks in the alias
- addresses and tries to find a match for the same zone. If a
- match is found, GOMail uses the first address that matches and
- uses it in the ORIGIN line, the SEENBY and the path lines.
- GOMail will be further enhanced in this area in future
- releases.
-
-
- GOMail COMMANDS
-
-
- GOMail commands are listed below and may be entered in any
- order or in combination with other commands. For example,
- GOMAIL TOSS SCAN
-
- TOSS: Toss all mail packets found in the inbound path into the
- BBS Message Databases
-
- SCAN: Scan all BBS Message Databases for new mail; if found
- export messages into FIDO mail packets.
-
- DR: Duplicate Database Rebuild. This option rebuilds, and re-
- sizes the duplicate database to the size specified in
- GOEdit, as the Maximum Duplicates to retain
-
- PURGE: Purge BBS messages, in each conference, until the number
- of messages remaining equals the number specified as the
- maximum number of messages to keep in each conference.
-
- NOWIN: Execute GOMail without status windows.
-
- DIAG: Causes GOMail to not redirect the output of the archive,
- and de-archive process to NUL.
-
- SYNC: Resets the GOMAIL.MPF file to reflect the highest message
- in each of the conferences listed in your AREAS.BBS File.
- This command "initializes" GOMail for the first time or
- resets the high message pointers in the event something
- gets messed up.
-
- NOCLEAN: Do not scan and clean the outbound directory.
-
- NOECHO: Do not process any newly arrived echomail messages.
- Instead, let them build up in inbound directory so that
- netmail may be processed. The echomail tossing will be
- saved for an event set in either D'Bridge or whichever
- frontend you are using.
