- INTRODUCTION
-
- The Biodoor is an external "door" program for an electronic bulletin
- board system. Its purpose is to familiarize the callers with one another
- and allow them to communicate in a friendly, semi-fictional world.
- They will be given a chance to enter their personal information, which
- other callers can look up.
-
- The program also includes a voting center. In it, the callers can post
- different questions, which other callers can look at and respond to. Its
- main purpose is to help individuals make surveys on the topics of their
- choice.
-
- To give the door a friendly look, there is also a "tavern", in which
- callers can chat either with each other or with the electronic bartender.
- Biodoor features an internal mail system. Through it, callers can send
- messages, virtual flowers, or even fictious "marriage proposals".
-
- Biodoor has full multinode support. Several people can be in the door
- at the same time, and can send pages to each other. Callers on different
- nodes can engage in a live chat. Precautions have been taken to prevent
- the disk conflicts that may occur with multinode doors.
-
- The door also features a classifieds ad section, where callers can
- post their ads on various topics. The section also includes a search
- engine.
-
- An internal profanity filter will filter out most of the obscenities
- callers might post.
-
- There is much more to the program that can be put into words though.
- Based on my experience, a large percentage of people who ever tried the
- door keep returning for more. Of course, if you do not have many callers
- this may not be the case. I would suggest letting your callers know
- about the Biodoor either by putting the file BIODOOR.ANS among your
- logon ansis, or mentioning it in your newsletter.
-
-
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
-
- The Biodoor does not require a lot of resources. By now, I am sure
- anyone can muster up this:
-
- * 80286 Intel Processor
- * 512 kilobytes of RAM
- * CGA display and adapter
- * MS-DOS version 3.31
-
- Of course, you will also need operational bulletin board software,
- onto which doors are installed. Unfortunately, the only drop file
- Biodoor supports (so far) is DOOR.SYS. If your bulletin board software
- does not create such file, I would suggest acquiring one of the many
- drop file converters out there. A fossil driver is also required.
-
-
- INSTALLATION
-
- I tried to make the installation as easy as possible. The first thing
- you should do is run SETUP.EXE. That program will create all the
- necessary subdirectories and uncompress some files.
-
- After you're done with SETUP.EXE, install the Biodoor into your
- bulletin board. You should invoke BIODOOR.EXE with the following
- on-line options:
-
- /N# - # is the node number, ex. BIODOOR.EXE /N1
-
- /B# - Sets the locked baud rate to #, ex. BIODOOR.EXE /B57600
- (I would suggest setting it in the Setup, though)
-
- /D? - The path to where drop file may be found, ex. BIODOOR.EXE /Dc:\bbs
-
- After you've done that, Biodoor should be ready for use. You can
- use BIOCFG.EXE to lock out users and control Biodoor. You can change
- file POSTER.ANS, it is the ANSI that is displayed when you press
- [R] in the Tavern.
-
- The Graffiti Wall is anonymous to the callers, however, everything is
- recorded in a file called GRAFFITI.LOG, in case you need to trace down
- a badmouther or something. To clear it, simply delete it.
-
-
- TROUBLESHOOTING
-
- 1. I can see the game, but my callers don't see anything.
- -- Check your communication parameters, make sure
- your fossil driver is loaded.
-
- 2. I get runtime errors 2, 3, 100, 106, or 154.
- -- Note in which section you get the errors, and reset it
- using BIOCFG.EXE, ex. Delete all public [M]ail
- If all fails, a [T]otal reset should fix the problem
-
- 3. I get runtime error 4.
- -- Increase FILES= declaration in your CONFIG.SYS
-
- 4. I get runtime error 101.
- -- Alas, you have run out of disk space. Delete some
- worthless junk to free some of it.
-
- 5. I get runtime errors 150, 152, 156, 157, 158, 160, or 161.
- -- Run a diagnostic utility on your disk. If it doesn't
- help, seek professional servicing.
-
- 6. I get runtime error 162.
- -- Check your network device sharing. If you don't have a network,
- then disregard this error.
-
- If none of these actions succeed in correcting the situation,
- you may reach me at: regulator2@juno.com
- or: tleoubae@voyager.bxscience.edu
