-
- This product is being distributed as Shareware. Under this concept you

-
- DISTRIBUTION:
- -------------
-
- You are encouraged to distribute ANNOUNCE! provided that all
- files contained in the archive are distributed in their original and
- unmodified state.
-
-
- DESCRIPTION:
- ------------
-
- ANNOUNCE! is a BBS announcement utility program that can be used on ANY BBS
- which creates a DOOR.SYS file(52 line version). For the BBS that always has
- too much to inform the users about. Instead of having logon screen after
- logon screen that most users get tired of seeing or low baud users get tired
- of waiting for, you can use ANNOUNCE! for various announcements that you
- want your users to know about. Door Game Resets, User Meets...etc.
- ANNOUNCE! is a MUST HAVE utility for any busy BBS!
-
-
- REGISTRATION INFORMATION:
- -------------------------
-
- There are a couple of ways in which you can Register ANNOUNCE! and
- recieve your individual key file, which will allow the program to operate in
- FULL Registered mode. Look for details on how to do this in the file:
- REGISTER.FRM included with this archive.
-
-
- SHAREWARE VS REGISTERED:
- ------------------------
-
- The SHAREWARE version of ANNOUNCE! has no limitations or is not
- crippled in any way, other than a pause going into the program and out of
- the program. This pause is disabled once you have Registered your copy
- and you recieve your individual key file. This is not in place to be
- annoying, just to encourage Registration of the product to cover the cost
- of programming time and support. Future versions, updates, and support
- of ANNOUNCE! are yours FREE with Registration.
-
-
- INSTALLATION:
- -------------
-
- Installation of ANNOUNCE! is very simple. The first thing you
- should do is unzip the entire archive into whichever directory you plan
- to operate ANNOUNCE! from.
-
- Then edit the sample configuration file (announce.cfg) that came with the
- archive. This .cfg file MUST keep the same name announce.cfg!
- An explanation of this file is included next. This file resides in the same
- directory you have the rest of the archive in:
-
-
- CONFIGURATION FILE
- ==================
-
- The format of the configuration file used with ANNOUNCE! is:
-
- C:\BBS\DOOR.SYS <- FULL path to your DOOR.SYS file
- Zippy's Lounge <- BBS name
- Jim <- Sysop's first name
- Webb <- Sysop's last name
- 1000 <- Security Level needed to add & delete
- announcements!
-
- Your announce.cfg file MUST contain 5 lines. Line 5 is the security level
- needed to add & delete announcements. Anyone with a level equal to or more
- than this line will be able to use these features. You can set this so you
- as Sysop and your Co-Sysop(s) will be able to see and use these features.
- Initially, line 5 in the sample announce.cfg file is set to 0. This is done
- so if you want to test ANNOUNCE! locally at the Dos Prompt, you will be able
- to use these features. ANNOUNCE! reads back a security level of 0 when run
- in local mode at the Dos Prompt. Be sure to set this line before you put
- ANNOUNCE! on your BBS or EVERYONE will be able to add & delete announcements!
-
-
- That's it! Now you're ready to run ANNOUNCE! on your BBS!
-
- **************************IMPORTANT*************************
- MAKE SURE TO READ ON TO (UP AND RUNNING)
- LATER IN THIS DOCUMENT
-
-
- RUNNING THE PROGRAM:
- --------------------
-
- This part is basically up to you. Depending on which BBS program you are
- running, the .bat file may look a little different. Refer to your BBS
- Manual for information on running Doors from your BBS. We will use a
- sample .bat file which would run ANNOUNCE! from a Wildcat System:
-
- DOOR10.BAT
- ==========
-
- CD\DOORS\ANNOUNCE
- ANNOUNCE ANNOUNCE.CFG
- CD\WC30
-
-
- If you would like to test ANNOUNCE! before putting it up on the BBS,
- you can run it locally at any time by typing LOCAL after the call line:
-
- EX: ANNOUNCE ANNOUNCE.CFG LOCAL
-
-
-
- FOSSIL DRIVER SUPPORT:
- ----------------------
-
- ANNOUNCE! also supports the use of Fossil drivers. To tell it to use the
- Fossil driver instead of the standard COM ports, just put /FD on the command
- line when running the door. For example:
-
- ANNOUNCE ANNOUNCE.CFG /FD
-
- indicates that a Fossil driver is present and should be used. If no Fossil
- driver is detected, ANNOUNCE! will print a message to that effect
- and exit back to the BBS gracefully.
-
-
- ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES:
- ----------------------
-
- ANNOUNCE! supports COM 1-4 on the standard IRQ's - COM1/COM3 = IRQ4
- and COM2/COM4 = IRQ3. If you wish to use a non-standard IRQ, add the IRQ
- number after the configuration filename. Let's assume you want to use COM1
- and IRQ5. The command line passed in the .CFG file would be:
-
- ANNOUNCE ANNOUNCE.CFG /5 or
- ANNOUNCE ANNOUNCE.CFG /%IRQ% for the environment variable.
-
- The /5 tells ANNOUNCE! to use IRQ5 rather than the standard IRQ4 that
- is normally used with COM1. No /x parameter is needed for the standard IRQ's.
-
-
- ****UP AND RUNNING:****
- ---------------
-
- When ANNOUNCE is up and running and ready to go log onto the BBS and go
- intp the door. ANNOUNCE! will match your security level with that of line
- 5 in the announce.cfg file. You will then be shown the special meanu that
- allows you to add and delete announcements.
-
- When adding announcements, you will be allowed to choose a background color
- for your announcement and a foreground color for your text. The overall
- screen is the brick wall which is used in every announcement. By being
- able to change background & forground colors, you will be able to give each
- announcement a look of its own. The date of each announcement is also
- displayed.
-
- Once you have entered in your announcement information, ANNOUNCE! will create
- a file called [announce.dat]. Each announcement and its information is
- listed line by line in this ascii file. At any point and time you can delete
- this file to clear ALL announcements. While online you will also be able to
- delete individual announcements as they become old or outdated. When you
- select [V]iew Announcements from the Main Menu along with the prompt
- [N]ext Announcement & [Q]uit, you will also be shown [D]elete Announcement.
- Use this command to delete each announcement as you see fit. You may also
- delete ALL of the announcements one by one. This will clear all announcements
- and [V]iew Announcements will tell you and the user that "No Announcements
- have been made".
-
- And that's it....enjoy ANNOUNCE!
-
-
- 486DX CPU's:
- ------------
-
- The math coprocessor in 486DX CPUs cannot handle floating point math which
- all MicroSoft Basic's use. This can show up as an ERROR 5, a keyboard
- timeout, etc.
-
- Fortunately there is an easy fix for this problem. Simply place the following
- line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
-
- SET NO87=ON
-
-
- ERRORS & PROBLEMS:
- ------------------
-
- If you encounter any problems while the door is running, it will generate a
- file called "dframe.err" and list the error in there. I have included the
- error codes and some additional information on fixing them in the file
- "error.qb" included with this archive.
-
-
-
-
