- *** MIDI Setup ***
-
- MusicTime can play back over two different MIDI devices
- at once, and can record from either an external MIDI
- keyboard, or your computer's typewriter keyboard.
-
-
- *** MIDI and Your Computer ***
-
- Every device in your computer that responds to MIDI
- (the Musical Instrument Digital Interface) has one
- or more drivers associated with it. A driver is a
- special software program that handles communication
- between the device and your computer. All MIDI
- devices need a driver to operate under Windows.
- Most MIDI devices come with the driver(s) they need
- for proper operation under Windows.
-
- Your computer's sound card probably has a MIDI
- synthesizer on it. When you installed the card, you
- probably also installed a driver for the MIDI
- synthesizer.
-
-
- *** Setting up MIDI in Rhapsody ***
-
- The MIDI Setup dialog which is available from the
- Setup menu in Rhapsody will let you choose the two
- MIDI output ports and the MIDI input port. It will
- also let you setup how you want "MIDI Thru" to act
- on your system.
-
- If you don't have a MIDI keyboard attached to your
- computer, set the Input Port to "none".
-
- NOTE: FM Synthesizer drivers cannot record. If an
- FM Synthesizer (OPL3, SuperSAPI, etc.) appears in the
- list of ports for the MIDI Input Port, just ignore it.
-
-
- *** What is the MIDI Mapper? (Windows 3.1)***
-
- The MIDI Mapper is a special MIDI program that is
- provided with Windows. It lets you perform advanced
- configuration of your MIDI devices. You can use the
- MIDI Mapper as an Output Port in Rhapsody; however,
- since Rhapsody can control your MIDI devices
- directly, it is usually not necessary to use the
- MIDI Mapper.
-
-
- *** TroubleShooting ***
-
- What if there are no devices listed (or only the
- MIDI Mapper) in the Output Port selection boxes?
-
- This means that your computer has no MIDI drivers
- installed. Please consult the manual for your sound
- card or other MIDI device to find out how to install
- and set up the drivers. If you have no sound card
- or other MIDI device installed, choose "None".
-
- HINT: You will probably need to use the "Drivers"
- applet in the Windows Control Panel to install
- and set up MIDI drivers.
-
-
- What if you selected a MIDI Port and there is no sound?
-
- The first thing to look for is the audio connections
- from your sound card or other MIDI device. If these
- seem to be set up correctly (and your speakers are
- on!), then there may be a problem with the way that
- the MIDI Driver is set up. Again, consult your MIDI
- device manual for information on drivers.
-
- Also, if you have an external MIDI keyboard, remember
- to connect your sound card or MIDI interface to it
- using MIDI cables.
-
- NOTE: Many sound cards have a MIDI driver that
- uses the joystick port to control an external
- MIDI synthesizer. If you select an output port that
- uses this driver, you won't hear anything unless
- you have an external MIDI synthesizer hooked up to
- it. Sound cards usually have a separate MIDI driver
- to control the MIDI synthesizer on the card.
