- MIDIBASE HELP
-
- BUTTON REFERENCE
- This section provides brief descriptions of the function of the
- buttons on MIDIBase's main screen.
-
- MIDI
- Clicking MIDI (under the "Setup" label) brings up the MIDI
- Setup dialog box. Here you can configure MIDIBase's MIDI
- setup by selecting the type of MIDI driver and the type of
- MIDI files you would like MIDIBase to use.
-
- MIDI Driver, Multimedia MIDI Driver. This driver can only
- be used in Windows 3.1 and Windows 3.0 with Multimedia
- Extensions. This driver uses the Windows MIDI Mapper to
- send MIDI data to your MIDI device. If you use this driver,
- make sure the MIDI Mapper is properly configured for your
- MIDI hardware.
-
- MIDI Driver, Midisoft MIDI Driver. This driver can be used
- with any version of Windows, but only works with MPU-401
- and compatible MIDI devices. This driver does not use the
- Windows MIDI Mapper. For this reason, we recommend that
- you select Normal MIDI Files (General MIDI) when using the
- Midisoft MIDI Driver.
-
- MIDI Driver, No MIDI Driver. When this option is selected,
- no MIDI driver is in use and you cannot play any of the
- musical examples.
-
- MIDI Files, Device-Independent MIDI Files. These MIDI
- files have been created to adhere to the Microsoft guidelines
- for MIDI file authoring under Windows 3.1 and Windows 3.0
- with Multimedia Extensions. In general, we recommend that
- you use these files only with the Multimedia MIDI Driver.
-
- MIDI Files, Normal MIDI Files (General MIDI Files). Normal
- MIDI Files do not contain multiple arrangements of the same
- piece of music. These files can potentially use all 16 MIDI
- channels. These files have been created to conform to
- General MIDI program change assignments.
-
- Additional Midisoft MIDI Driver Settings
- These parameters are only effective when the Midisoft MIDI
- Driver is in use.
-
- IRQ (Interrupt) Level. The IRQ (Interrupt) Level setting
- here must match the same setting on your MPU-401 or
- compatible MIDI interface.
-
- I/O Address. The I/O Address setting here must match the
- same setting on your MPU-401 or compatible MIDI interface.
-
- The IRQ (Interrupt) Level and I/O Address parameters
- provide a way for MIDIBase to identify your MIDI interface.
-
- Link
- Clicking Link (under the "Editor" label) brings up the Link To
- MIDI Editor dialog box. From this dialog box you can choose
- a MIDI editor (any program that reads standard MIDI files)
- that you would like to use with the MIDI files. If you select a
- program that can read MIDI files, MIDIBase will be "linked"
- to that program. When a MIDI editor is linked it means that
- clicking the "Edit" button or choosing Go To MIDI Editor
- from the File menu will exit MIDIBase and launch that MIDI
- editor with the last MIDI file you played.
-
- Edit
- Clicking Edit (under the "Editor" label) exits MIDIBase and
- launches the MIDI editor that was previously linked to using
- the Link To MIDI Editor... command. The MIDI editor will be
- launched with the last MIDI file you played. MIDIBase
- automatically sets the MIDI file to read-only so that you cannot
- accidentally make changes to a file that MIDIBase references.
- If you would like to edit the file, save it under a different
- name.
-
- NOTE: The MIDI file that is loaded in the MIDI Editor will be
- the last MIDI file played (by clicking the Play button), not the
- last MIDI file selected (by choosing in the list of pieces).
-
- Play
- Clicking Play (under the "Controls" label) plays the currently
- selected piece.
-
- Stop
- Clicking Stop (under the "Controls" label) stops the playback
- of the currently playing piece.
-
- Copy
- Clicking Copy (under the "Copy" label) brings up a Save As
- dialog box, allowing you to copy the currently-selected file
- (in the Pieces field) to another directory.
-
- MENU ITEM REFERENCE
- This section provides brief descriptions of MIDIBase's most
- important menu commands.
-
- THE FILE MENU
- Link To MIDI Editor...
- Selecting Link To MIDI Editor... from the File menu brings up
- the Link To MIDI Editor dialog box. See the Link command in
- the Button Reference section for details.
-
- Go To MIDI Editor
- Selecting Go To MIDI Editor from the File menu exits
- MIDIBase and launches the MIDI editor that was previously
- linked to using the Link To MIDI Editor... command. See the
- Edit command in the Button Reference section for details.
-
- THE MIDIBASE MENU
- MIDI Setup...
- Selecting MIDI Setup... from the MIDIBase menu brings up
- the MIDI Setup dialog box. See the MIDI command in the
- Button Reference section for details.
-
- Restore Page Size
- Selecting Restore Page Size from the MIDIBase menu
- restores MIDIBase to its default page size and shape. This
- can be handy if you accidentally resize its window so that part
- of a page is no longer visible.
-
- Reset MIDI
- Selecting Reset MIDI from the MIDIBase menu causes
- MIDIBase to play a "reset" sequence which will set most of
- the parameters of your MIDI sound module or sound card to
- logical default values. This will not harm MIDIBase or your
- MIDI hardware in any way. Choose this item if any pieces
- sound incorrect for some reason (incorrect instrumentation,
- wrong notes, strange audio effects). After choosing Reset
- MIDI, allow about 4 seconds for the reset.
