- Multi MPU Driver
- Documentation
-
- Please read the software license agreement at the end of this
- document before installing the software.
-
- The Multi-MPU driver is a replacement for the standard MPU
- driver that comes with Windows. It has several advantages over
- the standard driver. The major advantage of this driver is that
- it lets you use up to 10 MIDI programs at the same time (the
- standard MPU driver has a limit of one program at a time).
- Also, the MIDI input is better than the standard driver. The
- standard driver tended to produce "hung notes" as a result of data
- errors, but this problem has been eliminated in the Multi MPU
- driver. Also, if you happen to have more than one MPU401 card ,
- you can use them all at the same time, to record a live band for
- example.
-
- This is version 1.2 of the driver. In version 1.2 we've added a great
- new feature to the driver, allowing a program to receive MIDI input
- from another MIDI program, both on the same computer running under Windows.
- ********************************************************************
- THE PARAGRAPH BELOW IS ONLY FOR EXISTING USERS OF MULTIMPU DRIVER
- WHO ARE UPDATING TO THE NEW VERSION.
- If you already have the MultiMPU installed , and are updating to
- version 1.2 , you can bypass the installation process (if you'd like).
-
- First of all, you need to get EXIT Windows and go to the DOS prompt.( Do
- not use a DOS shell under Windows, EXIT Windows to the "genuine" DOS prompt )
-
- Simply Copy the file called MultiMPU.DRV from the floppy disk to
- your c:\win\system subdirectory. Note that this directory might be
- called c:\windows\system on your computer.
- ie b: Copy multimpu.drv c:\win\system
- or Copy multimpu.drv c:\windows\system
- **********************************************************
-
- Installation of the Multi MPU
- Driver
-
- 1. Run the Control Panel -Drivers Program
- The driver is installed from the Windows Control
- Panel - Drivers program. Click on the CONTROL PANEL to run
- this application.
- Then run The DRIVERS program. You will then see
- a list of your currently installed drivers.
- One of them is probably "Roland MPU 401 Driver".
-
- 2. Remove the existing MPU401 driver..
- 1. REMOVE the existing "Roland MPU401
- Driver". This is done by choosing the REMOVE option in the
- drivers program and selecting the "Roland MPU 401 driver".
- (note: Windows will actually keep the Roland driver on your hard
- disk, so if you need it again, you can just re-install it ).
- Windows will then ask you if you want to restart Windows.
- Answer NO .
-
- 3. Add and Setup the Multi-MPU driver
- Now , add the new MULTI MPU 401 driver. Press
- the ADD button in the drivers program.
- Since we are
- installing a brand new driver that Windows doesn't know about,
- we choose the option UNLISTED OR UPDATED DRIVER. and
- then press OK.
-
- .
- Windows then asks you to insert the disk with the new driver in it.
- This will be either drive A:\ or drive B:\. Type the drive letter in
- the box and then press OK.
-
- You will then see the list of new drivers on the Multi-MPU floppy
- disk
-
-
- The driver that you are interested in is called SoftZone Multi-
- MPU Driver. Select this driver and then press OK.
-
- note: SoftZone Speaker MIDI driver is a "bonus" included with
- the driver. It is not needed for the Multi MPU driver. This is a
- speaker driver. The sound of the speaker driver is of course
- limited by the poor quality of the speaker sound. If you want a
- speaker driver, give it a try. It might be useful in a situation where
- you don't have a sound card available and want to find a MIDI file
- etc.
-
- You will then see a dialog box to SETUP THE MULTI-MPU
- DRIVER.
- This allows you to type in the PORT ADDRESS (usually = 330)
- and IRQ# (usually =2)
- You type it in and then choose ADD CARD TO LIST.
- Although most people have only one MPU401 card, the driver is
- setup to support multiple cards, and if you have more than one
- you can add them to the list.
- There is a checkbox for Output Running Status. This setting is
- optional. This will speed up transmission of MIDI to your
- synthesizer (by sending less bytes) , but is only necessary if you
- are experiencing delays in MIDI transmission. The default is NO.
-
-
-
- 4. Reboot Windows to use the new driver
-
- Now, the driver should be installed on your system, and you
- need to restart Windows.
-
-
-
-
- As with all drivers in Windows, you will need to restart Windows
- for the new driver to take effect. We recommend a COLD
- REBOOT (turning the power off ) This is because some brands of
- MPU401 cards require a cold reboot when drivers are changed.
-
- Then Bootup Windows again. The MULTI MPU driver will
- initialize itself when Windows boots up. If it has any problems, it
- will tell you in a message. Examples of reasons for the driver to
- have problems hooking up would be :
- - incorrect PORT number or IRQ setting typed in the
- Multi-MPU setup
- - IRQ or Port conflict
- - didn't remove the previous "Roland MPU401 driver"
- - didn't cold reboot Windows (see above)
-
-
- Using The Driver in Your
- Programs
-
- When you use a MIDI program, like Band-in-a-Box, PowerTracks
- etc. you will now see the driver in a list of Midi drivers.
-
-
-
- Selecting the Drivers
-
- If you have 1 MPU401 CARD (the usual case)
- You should select MULTI MPU #1 IN as your MIDI-IN driver.
-
- You will never use the "Multi MPU merged In" driver.
- You should select Multi MPU #1 OUT as your OUTPUT driver.
-
- **MultiMPU Echo Out**
- This is a special input driver.
- It gives you input from any other MIDI program that is sending
- information out to your interface or sound card. This means that you can
- "hook in" to the output of another MIDI program, on the same computer.
- Some example uses of this are:
- - a MIDI monitor to examine a program's output.
- - directly recording from one program into another.
- - creating add-on programs which display information from one
- program to another. For example, a program might display fractal
- graphics based on the MIDI output of a program.
- *********************************
- OR
-
- :If you have more than 1 MPU401 card,
- you can select the MIDI-IN driver that you want to use, or select
- the merged in driver which is all inputs merged into one.
- Similarly, you can select which output card to use.
-
- You can have as many MIDI programs up and running as you
- want now, just hook them all up to the Multi MPU-IN and Multi-
- MPU out. All the programs will receive any input that you play,
- so that any of the programs can record.
-
- Preventing note doubling. Notes that you play on your MIDI
- keyboard will be sent to each program that is hooked up to the
- "Multi MPU Midi In Driver". If each program also has MIDI
- THRU turned on , each program would be sending the data to
- your synthesizer, with the effect of "note doubling". This can be
- prevented by only hooking up 1 program to MIDI IN, or better
- still, turning MIDI THRU on in only one of the programs that you
- are using.
-
-
- Removing The Multi-MPU Driver
- If for some reason you want to remove the driver (i.e. de-install).
- Run the CONTROL PANEL program then the DRIVERS
- program, then choose the REMOVE option, and select the "Multi-
- MPU driver" to remove. This will remove the driver by removing
- the references to the driver in control.ini, and removing the
- device=vlwampu.386 from system.ini. You can then re-install the
- Roland MPU driver by choosing ADD, and then selecting
- MPU401, and choosing USE CURRENT DRIVER since there is
- still a Roland MPU driver in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.
