- Encore v3.0
-
- Notice for anyone upgrading from Encore Version 2.6 or earlier
-
- Version 3.0 of Encore introduces some significant changes many of which are
- quite different from earlier versions. This Read Me file outlines the most
- important differences between version 2.6 and 3.0. Please consult the Reference
- Guide for more information about each specific feature.
-
- NEW FONTS
- There is an additional "grace" character added to the Anastasia font and you
- should replace any earlier versions of this font with the updated fonts in this disk
- set. Please refer to the Installation Instructions for more detailed instructions.
-
- NEW MENU STRUCTURE
- The most obvious change for previous owners for Encore will be the renamed
- and reordered Menus. We apologize if these new menus cause any confusion.
- The changes were not made to annoy you (honest!) but were done to better
- organize the selections according to how each is used. We hope the new menu
- names and order will soon become second nature to you.
-
- IMPORT AND EXPORT REMOVED
- In the process of reorganizing the Menus some items were removed. The Import
- and Export options in the File menu were removed and the "Open" and "Save
- As" dialogs expanded to accommodate these functions. Please refer to the
- sections in the Reference Guide that discuss the Open and Save As dialogs.
-
-
- NEW "PIANO SYSTEM"
- The most significant change in Encore's design is the new "Piano System". The
- default score consists of a "Piano Staff". This arrangement looks identical to the
- default score presented in version 2.6., but the Piano System in Encore v3.0
- differs considerably from Encore v2.6. Most noticeable will be the presence of
- only one line in the Staff Sheet for BOTH the treble and Bass clef staves. These
- two staves comprise one "staff" in the Staff Sheet and the single entry is used for
- all name, channel, program and volume assignments. The name will appear
- centered between the two staves of the Piano Staff.
-
- The Piano Staff was created specifically for cross-staff beaming operations. If
- you do not need the ability to create cross-staff beams, you can continue to use
- two staves for a piano part and create a brace between them. This will be
- identical to the piano system used in version 2.6 and earlier. A new 'Template'
- feature can be utilized to make this 'old style' piano system your default 'Untitled
- 1". Refer to the Reference Guide for further information on Templates.
-
- NEW VOICES AND VOICES IN "PIANO SYSTEMS"
- Along with the Piano System, another major change is the additional voices and,
- in particular, the way the Piano System uses those voices. Regular staves can use
- any or all eight voices available in Encore. Just as in previous versions of
- Encore, each voice can have rests hidden or showing and each voice layer acts
- independently from the others. A Piano System, however, SHARES all eight
- voices between the staves in the system. This allows for cross-staff beaming
- when the same voice is used on more than one staff in the same Piano System.
- More information about the Piano System, Cross-Staff beaming and Voices is in
- the appendix section on Voices in the Reference Guide.
-
- COPY AND PASTE BEHAVIOR IN PIANO STAVES
- Although a Piano Staff appears to be two (or more) separate staves, it is
- important to remember that, to Encore, the collection of staves that make up your
- "Piano Staff" is only a single staff. A common mistake is to paste into the lower
- staff only to find the content of the upper staff being erased in the process. This
- will always happen when the voice selector is set to all voices (voice -). The
- correct approach when pasting into a piano staff is to change the voice selector.
- If you wish to paste something into the lower staff without erasing anything in
- the upper staff, switch the voice selector to voice 5 (the default voice for the bass
- clef) before using paste. As long as the voice selector is set to a specific voice,
- paste operations will only replace notes that are also in that same voice.
-
- CONVERTING TWO STAVES INTO A PIANO STAFF
- Older scores that use two staves for a piano can be converted to the new "Piano
- Staff" with a little work. The most important reason for using the special piano
- staff in v3.0 is to facilitate cross-staff beaming. If your piano part does not
- require cross-staff beaming, the conversion into a piano staff may not be
- necessary.
-
- If you decide to convert two staves into a piano staff, the operation involves
- turning one of the staves into a piano staff using the "add Staff" command and
- then copying and pasting the contents of the second staff into this new piano
- staff. For the purpose of this example, the treble or right hand will be converted
- into a piano staff and the bass or left hand will be then copied and pasted.
-
- First select the right hand or upper staff. Select "Add Staff" from the Score
- menu. In the Add Staff dialog, enable the choice for "Change this to a Piano
- Staff", make sure the staff placement is set to "add Below" and OK the dialog.
- This will give you a combined piano staff into which you can copy and paste the
- left hand part.
-
- Most important when copying and pasting into this new piano staff will be the
- use of the voice selector. When copying from the original staff, the voice
- selector should probably be set to voice one. Unless the original staff contains
- multiple voices (discussed later) or the notes were entered in another voice on
- purpose, all of the note and rest data will probably be in voice one. Before
- copying anything, first select the voice for the material you are trying to copy.
-
- It is recommended that copying and pasting for this operation be done on a
- limited basis if only to make it easier to check the results as you proceed.
- Copying one system at time will allow for easy comparison between the original
- and the new piano part being constructed. A single click to the left of the original
- staff will select one system. Copy the material and place your cursor at the
- beginning of the new staff and system in your new piano staff.
-
- Before you paste the material, however, you must first switch the voice selector
- to a unique voice. The default voice for the bass clef in a piano system is voice
- 5. Set the voice selector to voice 5 and then paste. By using voice 5 the notes in
- the upper staff, which default to voice 1, will not be erased when pasting into
- voice 5 on the lower staff. In general, use voice 1 through 4 for the upper staff
- and voice 5 through 8 for the lower staff when pasting.
-
- If more than one voice was used in the original staff each voice must be copied
- and pasted separately. Select the first voice used (most likely voice 1) and copy
- and paste that voice into voice 5 in the new piano staff. Next switch the voice
- selector to the next voice used in the original staff and copy that voice. When
- pasting this next voice into your new piano voice, select a new voice as well. The
- logical choice for a second voice on the lower staff is voice 6. If additional
- voices were used, continue this process until all of the voices have been copied
- and pasted from the original staff to the new staff.
-
- When completed the original staff can be selected and deleted. It is advisable, as
- with any involved editing operation, to first make a copy of the file you are
- working on in case you make a mistake and wish to start over.
-
- A helpful tip in this process is to use the shortcuts for setting the voice selection
- with the computer keyboard. Typing the letter "V" followed by the number of
- the voice you wish to work with will change the voice selector. To select all
- voices you can type "V" followed by either an "A" or a dash ("-") character.
-
- FONT OPTIONS
- The sub-menus for selecting Fonts have been removed and either added to the
- appropriate dialog or grouped into the "Text Elements" dialog. For more
- information concerning these changes refer to the specific dialog or menu item in
- the Reference Guide.
-
- SLURS
- A new automatic slur function is now available. Slurs can be automatically
- created between two selected notes and either a menu or keyboard shortcut. For
- more information concerning how the slur is created please read the section on
- the Slur Notes menu item in the Notes menu.
-
- SLURS ACROSS PAGES
- Slurs that are intended to continue beyond the last measure on a page onto the
- next page must be created in two sections. If a slur across two or more measures
- is accidentally moved onto a page break, change the number of measures per
- system on the first page until the slur is returned to a single page. Continue by
- erasing the slur, restoring the desired number of measures on each page and then
- reenter a slur for each half of the slur that is continued across the page break.
-
- Slurs that are "flowed" from the end of one system to another will be correctly
- drawn but adjustments to these slurs can only be performed when the slur exists
- in a single system. Use the bracket keys or Score menu item to change the
- number of measures per system and then adjust the slur. For more precise
- adjustment of broken slurs the use of two or more slurs is recommended.
-
- Please note : Hairpins (crescendo) indications must be handled the same way as
- slurs when extended beyond a system or page.
-
- MIDI ENHANCEMENTS
- Several new features have expanded the MIDI capabilities of Encore. These
- include the ability to play repeats, endings, coda phrases and other similar
- instructions. For these new functions to play as intended, you may need to re-
- enter endings in old scores. The "Coda Phrases" dialog must also be used to
- enter any special instructions related to playback. Please refer to the Reference
- Guide sections on Coda Phrases, Barlines and Endings for more information
- about how these instructions can be interpreted for MIDI Playback.
-
- Version 3.0 also offers MIDI Interpretation for accents, marks (some), hairpins
- and the pedal on/off indications. These options, as well as the more versatile
- "MIDI" tool in the Tools palette, are each discussed in the Reference Guide.
- Consult the section where each item is found in the program.
-
- For novice users of MIDI and for anyone needing more information about how
- the various MIDI options can be used, as well as how to avoid common
- problems, please refer to the appendix section on MIDI in the Reference Guide.
-
- Print Selection and EPS files
- The "Print" item in the File Menu will appear as "Print Selection" when any area
- of your score is selected. When saving either selections or entire scores as EPS
- (Encapsulated PostScript) files, your default printer selected in the Printers
- Control Panel must be a PostScript compatible printer. If you have not installed a
- printer driver for a PostScript printer, use the Add button and your Windows
- disks to add a new printer driver to your Windows setup. It is not necessary to
- connect a printer to be able to save EPS files. Any of the PostScript printers will
- work. If you are not sure which printer to install we recommend adding one of
- the Apple LaserWriter printer drivers.
-
- Grace Notes
- Grace notes have been re-designed in version 3.0 for more accurate
- interpretation of grace notes during playback and are now taken into
- consideration when aligning a measure. Grace notes now "borrow" time from
- the preceding note. For a complete discussion of the new grace note capabilities,
- please refer to the Reference Guide section on Grace Notes in the Notes Menu.
- Please also note that the grace note character has been altered in the font and the
- new font must be used for this character to be displayed and printed properly.
-
- Compressed Rests
- Compressed rests have been added to Encore 3.0. This new feature is available
- both as a menu item for changing rests within the score or as an automatic option
- when extracting a part. For more information concerning Compressed Rests
- please refer to both the Extract Part section in the Reference Guide (File Menu)
- and the Compressed Rests dialog (Measures Menu).
-
- Paste Operations and AutoSpace
- Paste Operations have been improved in Encore 3.0 and now will accommodate
- pasting less than complete measures. Spacing of pasted material is directly
- affected by the status of the "AutoSpace" function in the Setup Menu. When
- AutoSpace has been enabled, the pasted material is aligned (justified) after each
- paste. When the AutoSpace function is not in effect (no check mark next to the
- menu item), the paste operations will scale the pasted information into the new
- measures. For carefully hand-spaced material, this will preserve the relative
- spacing of the copied material. Please refer to the section on AutoSpace and
- Align Spacing for more information.
-
- Align Spacing and AutoSpace
- The "Justify" command has been enhanced and renamed "Align Spacing". This
- dialog now features an "engraver's spacing" option in addition to the
- "mathematical spacing" used in previous versions. The AutoSpace function uses
- the Engraver's Spacing calculations for spacing notes as they are entered or
- edited. Please refer to the Reference Guide section concerning Align Spacing for
- more information.
-
- Guitar Tab and rhythm staves
- Encore 3.0 has added two new staff types. These two staff types are discussed in
- the Reference Guide section describing the Add New Staff dialog (Score Menu).
- The Guitar Tablature staff is also discussed in greater depth in the section about
- the Make Tab dialog and function (Notes Menu).
-
- Additional Changes
- There are many other new features and changes in version 3.0. The Reference
- Guide has been entirely rewritten for Encore 3.0. Please take the time to read the
- Reference Guide before calling Passport's Technical Support Department. In
- many cases, the answer to your question can be found in the manual.
