  1. How to Setup War Diary:

  3. If you do not setup the game as shown below, you will not be able to load any
  4. games that you save (the program will crash when you attempt to load them).

  9. Click on "Setup" to configure your system
  10. for War Diary.
  11.  
  12. When finished:
  13.  
  14. Right click on the file "Gamedemo".
  15.  
  16. Click on "Properties" in the pop-up menu that
  17. appears.
  18.  
  19. Click on the "Program" tab (2nd tab in at the top).
  20.  
  21. Click on the "Advanced" button.
  22.  
  23. Check (by clicking on it) the "MS-Dos mode" box
  24. (third box down).
  25.  
  26. The program is now ready to play.

  30. DOS/Windows 3.1
  31.  
  32. It is best to run the game directly from Dos.
  33. Exit Windows 3.1 before setting up or playing.
  34.  
  35. Games will not be saved properly if an expanded memory manager (such as
  36. EMM386 or QEMM) or Smartdrive is running while you play the
  37. game. The saved files will be corrupted.
  38.  
  39. In order to save games, you will need to prevent these programs from loading
  40. into memory when you start your computer.

  43. How to do this:
  44.  
  45. The computer reads two files -"config.sys" and "autoexec.bat" when it starts
  46. up. This tells it to load the expanded memory manager and Smartdrive.
  47. We can edit these files and prevent the programs from loading.
  48.  
  49. The easiest way to do this, is to create a special setup for War Diary
  50. by using a boot disk:
  51.  
  52.  
  53. Place a blank floppy in drive A:
  54.  
  55. type "format a:/s" at the Dos prompt and hit the [enter] key on your keyboard
  56. (formats a disk in drive a and transfer
  57. essential system files to the disk).
  58.  
  59. type "C:"   and hit [enter]
  60. (switch to drive C)
  61.  
  62. type "cd\"  and hit [enter]
  63. (change to the root directory)
  64.  
  65. type "copy config.sys a:"  and hit [enter]
  66. (copies the config.sys file to the floppy in drive A)
  67.  
  68. type "copy autoexec.bat a:"  and hit [enter]
  69. (copies the autoexec.bat file to the floppy in drive A)
  70.  
  71. type "a:"   and hit [enter]
  72. (switch to the floppy in drive A)
  73.  
  74. type "edit config.sys"  and hit [enter]
  75. (edit the config.sys file in drive A)
  76.  
  77. Towards the top of the file is a line with "EMM386" or "QEMM386" or
  78. something similar. At the beginning of this line type "REM".
  79.  
  80. e.g. c:\dos\emm386.exe
  81.  
  82.     becomes:
  83.  
  84.     REM c:\dos\emm386.exe
  85.  
  86. Save and exit.

  88. type "edit autoexec.bat"  and hit [enter]
  89. (edit the autoexec.bat file)
  90. In this file there will be a line with "Smartdrv.exe".
  91. Again, at the beginning of this line type "REM".

  93. e.g. c:\windows\smartdrv.exe
  94.  
  95. change to:
  96.  
  97.     REM c:\windows\smartdrv.exe
  98.  
  99. The "REM" tells the computer to ignore this line, so the program will not
  100. load. You can put REM in front of any line, to prevent any programs that you
  101. do not need for playing War Diary, from loading. This will free up more
  102. memory. You will need sound (e.g. a line with SET BLASTER=) and a mouse
  103. (e.g. a line with mouse.exe)

  105. Save and exit.
  106.  
  107. Leave the floppy in drive A and restart your machine.
  108.  
  109. At the Dos prompt, switch to the drive and directory (or folder)
  110. where you installed the War Diary demo.
  111.  
  112. type "setup" to configure the game for your machine.
  113.  
  114. type "gamedemo" to start War Diary.
  115.  
  116. To play War Diary in future, place this floppy boot disk in your A drive and
  117. restart your machine.
