  14. About WC4JOY.DLL
  15. ----------------

  17.   WC4JOY.DLL is a set of alternate joystick routines. If you are
  18.   experiencing lockups, bad calibration data, or any other problems
  19.   concerning joystick calibration, you may want to give this alternate
  20.   set of routines a try.

  24.   |  NOTE : THIS PATCH MAY NOT WORK FOR YOU! Machines of different  |
  25.   |  speeds return different joystick values (hence, the need for   |
  26.   |  joystick calibration). During testing of these routines, it    |
  27.   |  appeared that machines that returned high-end values for the   |
  28.   |  right-most and down-most positions (in excess of approximately |
  29.   |  1300) would have trouble looking down and left. If this is     |
  30.   |  what is happening in your case -- if the values returned with  |
  31.   |  is greater than 1300 -- you may be a prime candidate for a     |
  32.   |  speed-adjustable game card.                                    |

  37. Installation of WC4JOY.DLL
  38. --------------------------

  40.   1)    Change to the directory where WC4JOY.EXE was extracted.
  41.   
  42.   2)    Copy the WC4JOY.DLL file to the C:\WC4 directory, or
  43.         the directory used to install the game, i.e. :
  44.  
  45.             COPY WC4JOY.DLL C:\WC4   [ENTER]
  46.  
  47.   3)    Delete the JOY0.DAT file in your directory.
  48.  
  49.   4)    Make sure your joystick is firmly attached to the joystick port. 
  50.  
  51.   5)    Run Wing Commander IV. The patch will let you know if it
  52.         was successfully installed; it should say :
  53.  
  54.           "Alternate joystick DLL loaded."
  55.  
  56.         You will be asked to recalibrate the joystick.
  57.         
  58.   6)    Once you're into the game, if your joystick drifts. This is 
  59.         due to the fact that alternate joystick routines are being 
  60.         used rather than the ones used when you initially installed 
  61.         the game. Simply recalibrate by selecting Calibrate Joystick 
  62.         in the Main Terminal, or press [ALT-C] in gameflow or
  63.         in space flight.

  79.   *     If the current joystick routines work fine, it is recommended
  80.         that this patch is not used.

  82.   *     You MUST have a working joystick to use this patch. If there
  83.         is a joystick port conflict, or if the joystick or port is
  84.         faulty, you may not be able to successfully use this patch.
