  6. HOW TO USE THIS UPDATER
  7. The file you are downloading has been compressed with a PKZip 2.04g
  8. You must have copy of PKUnzip (available on most online services)
  9. installed on your system. These instructions also assume that you have
  10. installed PKUnzip in a directory which is in your PATH. To update your 
  11. copy of SimCity 2000 for Windows to version 1.2, take the 
  12. following steps:
  13.  
  14.    1. Copy SC2W12.ZIP into the directory where SimCity 2000 for Windows
  15.       is installed. The default directory is C:\SC2K4WIN-- these 
  16.       instructions assume you have installed SimCity 2000 to the default
  17.       directory.  If you have installed to another directory, substitute
  18.       the path you used for C:\SC2K4WIN.
  19.    2. Exit Windows or open a DOS prompt in Windows.  Type in 
  20.       CD\SC2K4WIN{Enter}.  When you are in the directory where SimCity
  21.       2000 is installed, type in PKUNZIP SC2W12.ZIP{Enter}.
  22.    3. When the files have been extracted, type in PATCH{Enter}.
  23.    4. Good things will happen, and the patch program will tell you about
  24.       them. When it is done, restart Windows (or if you are in a DOS 
  25.       session under Windows, type in EXIT{Enter} to go back to Windows.
  26.    5. If desired, you may delete the files PATCH.EXE, PATCH.RTP and README.TXT
  27.       from your C:\SC2K4WIN directory.  Keep a copy of SC2W12.ZIP on floppy 
  28.       in case you need to reinstall SimCity 2000 for Windows in the future.

  30. THINGS FIXED IN SIMCITY 2000 FOR WINDOWS VERSION 1.2
  31. For those of you who are upgrading from version 1.0, here's what's new:
  32.  
  33. IMPROVED LOW MEMORY CHECKING
  34. SimCity 2000 will now warn you if you don't have enough free memory to run 
  35. reliably. Additionally, low memory situations should be much more stable 
  36. (but not totally - don't say we didn't warn you if you're running low and 
  37. you crash!).

  39. AFRICAN SWALLOW
  40. At gunpoint, we forced the programmers to remove all safety settings and 
  41. allow the user to select the infinitely dangerous (and fast) African Swallow 
  42. speed setting. If you a running a 486 DX2 66, DX4 100 or any P-5 system, you will
  43. notice a big difference.  You will not see a difference on slower systems.
  44. Caution! Using this setting will cause SimCity 2000 to not draw any screen 
  45. updates (well, ok, it draws them once every few game-months), not to time itself
  46. against your system's MCI clock, and may cause rips in the fabric of the 
  47. universe if used improperly. If you have selected this newly-declassified 
  48. speed setting and a disaster occurs, SimCity 2000 will spit you out of Swallow 
  49. mode so you can fight the forces of evil in real-time.

  51. THE SIMCITY 2000 URBAN RENEWAL KIT FOR WINDOWS
  52. SimCity 2000 for Windows Version 1.2 is fully compatible with the Urban
  53. Renewal Kit for Windows; however, if you have purchased a copy of the 
  54. Urban Renewal Kit for Windows, you do not need to run this patch.  The setup
  55. program for the Urban Renewal Kit will automatically update your currently
  56. installed version of SimCity 2000 for Windows.  If you have updated to version
  57. 1.2, and experience problems installing the Urban Renewal Kit, simply reinstall
  58. your original copy of SimCity 2000 before you install the Urban Renewal Kit.

  60. Even with this update, you must have the WINDOWS version of the Urban Renewal 
  61. Kit; the DOS version of the Urban Renewal Kit is NOT compatible with SimCity
  62. 2000 for Windows.

  64. SEVERAL DOZEN BUG FIXES
  65. Including several simulator fixes, video card incompatibility fixes, 
  66. terrain editing fixes, city editing fixes, some hardware compatibility 
  67. issues (SC2k should run much better if you don't have a sound card. Sound 
  68. cards are cool, go buy one.)

  70. No, the Microsimulator limit is not "fixed". It's designed to be at 150 
  71. and will probably stay that way until the end of time. Sorry.

  73. COLOR DEPTH
  74. SimCity 2000 for Windows should now run in whatever color depth you desire, 
  75. with two VERY IMPORTANT POINTS:
  76.  
  77.    1. Although you can run at whatever color setting you'd like, color depths
  78.       of anything other than 256 colors may have bizarre palette and color
  79.       cycling problems.

  81.    2. Some or all of the animations may not work if you are running in more
  82.       or less than 256 colors.

  88. Do not contact Maxis Customer Support with color, palette, or animation
  89. difficulties UNLESS YOU ARE HAVING THE PROBLEMS WHILE RUNNING A 256 COLOR
  90. DRIVER IN WINDOWS!!!  Although SimCity 2000 for Windows may run in any color
  91. depth, we will ONLY support the program in 256 colors.  In other words, choose
  92. any other color depth at your own risk.

  94. WINDOWS '95 BETA TESTERS
  95. There has been NO attempt to make SimCity 2000 for Windows more compatible
  96. with Windows '95.  Until Windows '95 is a released product, we will assume that
  97. this program will be used with a released version of Windows.
