  1. README.TXT FOR MAELSTROM V1.1

  3.     Thank you for purchasing Maelstrom, the premiere simulation-
  4.         strategy game.
  5.  
  6.     Because of the processing and memory requirements of Maelstrom, we
  7.     suggest that you run Maelstrom in a "clean environment".  This means
  8.     that your machine should be configured free of "CPU-hogging" and
  9.     "memory-grabbing" TSR's and other programs of the like.
  10.  
  11.     Maelstrom requires 589K of available "low DOS" memory to run
  12.         successfully.  Most machines do not have this amount of memory
  13.         available on ordinary start-up.
  14.  
  15.     If you encounter memory problems in running Maelstrom (such as the game
  16.     refuses to run), you may need to create a "boot-disk" with which you
  17.     can boot your system.  You will want to create a disk which can
  18.     boot up your system, but will bypass and not start any of the normal
  19.         TSR's that are part of your normal hard-drive auto-execution sequence.
  20.  
  21.     To help you do this, we have included on this disk (disk #1) two
  22.         sets of    files that will aid you in making a bootable start-up disk.
  23.  
  24.     You will need to first format a MS-DOS 5.x system disk.  (Please see
  25.         the Maelstrom Technical Reference Guide for detailed instructions.)
  26.     
  27.     To properly prepare your system disk you will want to do one of the
  28.     following, depending on which seems most appropriate:

  30.     1) For users of QEMM, you will want to copy the following files off
  31.        this Maelstrom Disk #1 onto a bootable system disk:

  33.             copy config.000 a:config.sys
  34.             copy autoexec.000 a:autoexec.bat
  35.  
  36.        PLEASE NOTE: These start-up files do not load your mouse driver,
  37.            so you will need to load that separately before beginning play.
  38.  
  39.     2) If you are not using QEMM, you will probably want to copy these
  40.            files off the Maelstrom Disk #1 onto a bootable system disk:

  42.             copy config.001 a:config.sys
  43.             copy autoexec.001 a:autoexec.bat
  44.             
  45.        PLEASE NOTE: These start-up files do not load your mouse driver,
  46.            so you will need to load that separately before beginning play.

  49.     Now reboot your system with your newly created boot disk and go to
  50.     the harddrive partition and run Maelstrom as normal.  This disk that
  51.         you will have created can be used with other programs that require a
  52.         "Clean Enviroment" to operate.

  54.         IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING WINDOWS SMART DRIVE
  55.  
  56.         If your system files automatically load the Windows Smart Drive disk
  57.         cache driver (smartdrv.exe), you will not be able to run Maelstrom
  58.         without first loading EMM '386, or a memory manager such as QEMM-386.
  59.         If you need examples of startup files which load EMM '386, please refer
  60.         to two files on this disk, autoexec.002 and config.002.  Use the MS-DOS
  61.         Editor to modify the startup files on your hard drive, based on these
  62.         examples.
