  5. UPDATE INSTRUCTIONS
  6.  
  7. This updates version 483.04, 483.05 or 483.051 to version 483.06
  8.  
  9. These files are designed to update Darklands AFTER it has been
  10. installed. If your current version has a DARKLAND.EXE file of date
  11. 8/31/92 or earlier, this update will greatly improve your software.
  12.  
  13. You will need about 4.4 MB of free hard disk space to perform this 
  14. update before you copy any files.
  15.  
  16. To update, first copy all these files into your MPS\DARKLAND
  17. subdirectory (or whatever subdirectory you selected for the game 
  18. during the original install). 
  19.  
  20. Next type UPDATE and tap the ENTER key. The updating process may
  21. take quite some time (possibly even one hour or more), depending 
  22. on the speed of your machine, its configuration (EMS and disk
  23. caches help), and the specific version being updated. The computer 
  24. can perform the update unattended (i.e., you don't have to stay 
  25. and watch it!).

  27. The update program automatically examines each of your DARKLANDS
  28. files for any changes, additions or deletions and makes them on these
  29. files directly. When finished, you can delete the files UPDATE.EXE,
  30. PATCH.EXE and PATCH.RTP, which will free about 1.2 MB of hard disk space.

  32. Now your files EXACTLY match the files of version 483.06, as if 
  33. you'd just installed them from the distribution disks.

  36. WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 483.06
  37.  
  38. This version has a few new features added (see the new README.TXT).
  39. It also fixes various machine compatibility problems and other bugs 
  40. found in earlier versions. Finally, it includes new and/or revised 
  41. artwork for certain areas of the game.

  43. The new version allows scrolling through the saved game list with
  44. the keyboard arrow keys. It also allows loading the game from within
  45. the game (two greatly desired features). See the new README.TXT for
  46. details.

  48. In general, saved games from the previous version will work fine in
  49. this new version. A few minor problems from old quests may remain,
  50. but these do not significantly affect the game.

  52. However, if you have been playing with the rare version 483.04, 
  53. we recommend that you restart the game. Otherwise the saved game 
  54. will "carry over" more significant problems. In case you're 
  55. wondering, version 483.04 has file DARKLAND.001 on disk 1 dated
  56. 08-04-92. Later versions, which have virtually no trouble with
  57. saved games, have a later date for this file.
