- As the brigades of Archer and Davis, the leading elements of Heth's Division,
- advanced toward Gettysburg they encountered the screening force of Brig. Gen.
- Buford's Cavalry Division. For almost an hour they skirmished along Herr's
- Ridge in the drizzling rain. Outnumbered, Buford eventually pulled Brig. Gen.
- Gamble's troopers back to McPherson's Ridge and ordered Colonel Devin to cover
- his right. The question now became: could they hold this position until
- reinforcements arrived?
