  76. As the brigades of Archer and Davis, the leading elements of Heth's Division,
  77. advanced toward Gettysburg they encountered the screening force of Brig. Gen.
  78. Buford's Cavalry Division. For almost an hour they skirmished along Herr's
  79. Ridge in the drizzling rain. Outnumbered, Buford eventually pulled Brig. Gen.
  80. Gamble's troopers back to McPherson's Ridge and ordered Colonel Devin to cover
  81. his right. The question now became: could they hold this position until
  82. reinforcements arrived?
