  1. Caldera OpenLinux 2.3 Release Notes

  4.     Caldera OpenLinux 2.3 contains many new features to make
  5. your Linux experience even better.  More video cards than ever are now
  6. supported due to the integration of XFree86 3.3.4.  OpenLinux 2.3 also
  7. includes enhanced frame buffer support.
  8.  
  9.     Lizard, Caldera Systems' Linux Installation Wizard, has been
  10. dramatically improved.  Lizard now detects many more video cards than
  11. before.  With this added video card support, you are almost guaranteed
  12. to have your video card auto-detected, making installation even
  13. easier.  Also, Lizard now detects many sound cards so that both video
  14. and audio are automatically configured without any user intervention.
  15. Additionally, if you change video cards in your system, you can now
  16. run Lizard after the installation to reconfigure the new video
  17. options.  A new option to configure the LILO boot manager has been
  18. added to give you even more control over your system.

  20.     The installation now offers five pre-configured Workstation and
  21. Server configurations, including Web Server, Business Workstation, and
  22. Development Workstation.  You can also create your own custom
  23. configurations to fit your needs.  Along with the custom configuration
  24. option, the new Linux Unattended Installation provides the ability
  25. to have completely non-interactive, script-based installs.  The Unattended
  26. Install, along with the ability to run Lizard remotely, makes network
  27. administration easier than ever.

  29.     In order to protect the data on your hard drive and simplify the
  30. installation of OpenLinux, a new version of Partition Magic CE
  31. (Caldera Edition) has been provided by PowerQuest.  This upgraded
  32. version now includes support for hard drives larger than 8 GB.  Also,
  33. the commercial backup and restore utility BRU is integrated into the
  34. KDE desktop.  The added performance of the robust 2.2.10 Linux kernel
  35. is included.

  37.     OpenLinux 2.3 is now the foundation for business desktop
  38. productivity.  With the inclusion of ApplixWare Office Suite 4.4.2,
  39. StarOffice 5.1, and WordPerfect 8.0, your office can easily share
  40. documents between employees who use Linux, MacOS, or Windows. The
  41. development environment of ApplixWare SHELF is included which allows
  42. you to easily build cross-platform visual applications in ELF. This
  43. also allows for significant customization of the ApplixWare Office
  44. suite.  Video and audio conferencing tools are included. The award
  45. winning KDE 1.1.1 provides a powerful, yet simple, GUI for Linux. Many
  46. KDE 1.1.1 themes, along with a sneak preview of the latest development
  47. version of KDE 2.0, are also in the contrib section of the CD.

  49.     New RAID support for IBM ServeRAID, Compaq Smart2 RAID, and Mylex
  50. RAID has been added so that OpenLinux can be deployed anywhere -- from
  51. a small business to the enterprise.  System configuration and
  52. administration is simplified by COAS 1.1, which is integrated with the
  53. KDE desktop environment. For programmers who want to assist in the
  54. development of KDE, Qt 2.0 is included, along with the KDE development
  55. libraries, example code, tutorials, and OpenGL extensions. The
  56. compiling libraries and localization data of Glibc version 2.1.1 are
  57. included.

  59.     For those who also want to try running some Windows 95/98 programs
  60. natively under Linux, WINE, an alternative Windows implementation, is
  61. included.  All of this, plus the source code for all non-commercial
  62. packages, is included on three CD's.
