- "Neuroanatomy: An Electronic Atlas" is designed to be a learn
- and review tool. It reviews the "Brainstem" section of the human brain.
-
- *** NAVIGATING THE ATLAS ***
-
-
- General Information:
- =======================
-
- Once you have read this general section, review the
- navigating section on either mouse manipulation or keyboard
- manipulation of the program.
-
- When the BRAINSTEM ATLAS "main menu" appears, this screen
- shows the brainstem section. The sections in the BRAINSTEM
- ATLAS program all work the same way. The red lines show the
- approximate placement of the individual cross-sections.
-
- Now select the desired brainstem section by clicking directly
- on the red line or by using your keyboard. A picture of the
- selected section appears.
-
-
- The upper left corner displays a small picture of
- the brainstem with the selected cross-section position
- delineated with a red line.
-
- Above the picture of the cross-section, an identifying bar
- labels the section, cross-section number and which "page" of the
- list of structures is shown in the chart to the left of the
- cross-section picture.
-
- Selecting a structure from the list causes an arrow, outline,
- or pattern to appear on the cross-section, pointing to the
- identified structure.
-
- At the bottom of the list of structures four "buttons"
- appear: "Test," "Options," "PgUp," and "PgDn."
-
- Test:
- Selecting the "Test" button moves you into the
- other main function of this program -- "testing"
- your retention of the cross-section you've just reviewed.
-
- The screen displays a picture of the cross-section you
- were just studying, but the list of structures is
- replaced by the following choices:
-
-
- - Select By Multiple Choice
- - Show Answer
- - Next
- - Stop
- - Quick Review
-
- The top right of the screen displays "QUIZ," and
- an arrow, outline, or pattern on the picture points
- to a randomly selected structure as your first
- test "question."
-
- Select By Multiple Choice:
- This function presents you with the list of
- structures belonging to this cross-section.
-
- [NOTE: The displayed list may hold more choices than actually
- appear on the screen. Additional choices can be seen by using
- the scroll bar on the right of the list. To scroll, you have
- several options. With a mouse you can either click on the
- arrow pointing up or down on the scroll bar or you can use
- the keyboard. Press the Page Up or Page Down keys, or you
- can press and hold the up or down arrow keys.]
-
- Select your answer. A pop-up window appears indicating if
- your choice was correct or incorrect.
-
- Show Answer: Select this option to see the correct name of
- the brainstem structure indicated.
-
- Next: Select "Next" to have the BRAINSTEM ATLAS pick
- another random structure on the brainstem
- cross-section.
-
- Quick Review: This choice permits you to review quickly the
- structures on this cross-section.
-
- Stop: Select "Stop" to exit the "Test" option and
- return to the previous screen of the selected
- brainstem cross-section.
-
- Options: Selecting this button causes a pull-down menu
- to appear that lists the BRAINSTEM index and
- an option to leave the program. (This is in
- addition to the function key "F3=Quit.")
-
- PgUp:
- Selecting this button will display the previous "page"
- of list structures if you are currently not showing "page"
- one. If you are on "page" one, PgUp returns you to the
- previous cross-section.
-
- PgDn:
- Selecting this button will display subsequent "pages" of
- the list of structures if you are not currently on the
- last "page." If you are, the next cross-section is displayed.
-
- The function key bar appears at the bottom of the screen and at the
- bottom of the "Test" screen. The following function keys appear:
-
- Esc=Cancel: This key cancels any pop-up or pull-down
- window that appeared.
-
- F1=Help: This key displays this HELP file.
-
-
- F3=Exit: This key exits the program, returning you to
- your system prompt.
-
- F6=Grid: This key places a grid of appropriate brainstem
- structures on the displayed section. You can
- remove the grid by pressing the spacebar or F6.
-
- Navigating With A Mouse:
- ========================
-
- With a mouse connected, a pop-up window appears after the
- three title screens and asks if you wish to use the mouse.
- You may answer "yes" or "no" either through pressing the
- appropriate "y" or "n" key, or, you may click the mouse button
- on your choice.
-
- [NOTE: With a 2- or 3-button mouse use the left button.
- Unlike other applications you may be familiar with, the
- BRAINSTEM ATLAS only uses a single click on the mouse to
- manipulate the program.]
-
- Examine the picture on the screen and choose the
- desired cross-section by clicking directly on the RED line.
-
- On the list of structures, move the arrow to highlight
- your selection and click the mouse.
-
- On the "Test" and "Quick Review" options, the arrow changes
- to an "X" when making a choice.
-
- Navigating With The Keyboard:
- =============================
- On the "main menu" screen select the brainstem section
- you wish to view by entering the corresponding number
- or letter, (eg. "1-9" or "A-H").
-
- List of Structures: Press the keyboard button labeled "Page Up"
- or "Page Down" to display additional "pages"
- of the list.
-
- Use the "up" and "down" arrow keys on your
- keyboard to highlight specific list
- structure items.
-
- [NOTE: For the BRAINSTEM ATLAS to accept your
- selection, you must highlight the item
- and press <Enter>.]
-
- Test and Options Buttons:
- Press the highlighted text character on the
- "Test" and "Options" buttons (eg, "T" or
- "O"). In the "Test" section, press the
