  3. This file explains the features and installation instructions for the 
  4. updated printer drivers and screen fonts provided on this disk.  
  5.  
  6. The drivers provided here are:
  7.  
  8.  The PostScript driver (version 3.4A) provides a wider range of printer 
  9. support, especially for Linotronic Imagesetters.  
  10.  
  11.   The HP LaserJet Series II (PCL 4) printer driver (version 3.4) is much 
  12. faster than the earlier version provided on your Windows 3.0 disks.  
  13.  
  14.  The HP LaserJet III (PCL 5) printer driver (Version 3.7) has a number of 
  15. new features, including an improved Font Installer that lets you install 
  16. scalable soft fonts, improved compatibility with Adobe Type Manager, and 
  17. the ability to print scalable fonts with Reverse type style.
  18.  
  19. There are two sets of driver installation instructions below: one for 
  20. replacing an existing driver with a new version, and the other for 
  21. installing a new driver when no previous version has been installed.  If 
  22. you are replacing an earlier version of a printer driver with a new 
  23. driver, install the new driver over the existing one; do not delete the 
  24. earlier version first.  The newly installed driver will have the same 
  25. configuration as the one it replaces.

  27. You must install these drivers using the Windows Control Panel; they are 
  28. compressed and therefore cannot be simply copied to your hard disk.

  31. INSTALLING A DRIVER
  32. =============================

  34. To replace an existing  driver with the new version:
  35.  
  36. 1. In the Main window of Program Manager, double-click the Control Panel 
  37. icon.
  38.  
  39. 2.  In the Control Panel window, double-click the Printers icon.
  40.  
  41. 3. In the "Printers" dialog box, click "Add Printer..." and then 
  42. double-click on the printer name appropriate for your new driver.  A 
  43. confirmation alert appears, asking if you want to use the existing driver 
  44. ("Current") or the updated driver ("New"). 
  45.  
  46. NOTE: If you are installing the PCL 5 printer driver (hppcl5a.drv) and 
  47. plan to use the Help available from the printer-specific dialog box after 
  48. installation, scroll to the bottom of the printer list and double-click on 
  49. "Unlisted Printer."  With this option, Windows will install the correct 
  50. Help information.
  51.  
  52. 4.  Click "New" in the confirmation alert, insert your drivers disk when 
  53. prompted, and click "OK." When installation is complete, Windows adds an 
  54. extra entry for this driver in the "Printers" dialog box.  
  55.  
  56. 5. Highlight the driver entry with the port assignment of "None," and 
  57. click "Configure..."  
  58.  
  59. 6.  In the "Printers -- Configure" dialog box, highlight "None" in the 
  60. list of printer ports, and click "Remove."
  61.  
  62. 7.  Click "OK" in each open dialog box, close the Control Panel Window, 
  63. and restart Windows.
  64.  
  65. To install a new driver when no previous version has been installed:
  66.  
  67. 1. In the Main window of Program Manager, double-click the Control Panel 
  68. icon.
  69.  
  70. 2.  In the Control Panel window, double-click the Printers icon.
  71.  
  72. 3. In the "Printers" dialog box, click "Add Printer..." and then 
  73. double-click on the printer name appropriate for your new driver. 
  74.  
  75. NOTE: If you are installing the PCL 5 printer driver (hppcl5a.drv) and 
  76. plan to use the Help available from the printer-specific dialog box after 
  77. installation, scroll to the bottom of the printer list and double-click on 
  78. "Unlisted Printer."  With this option, Windows will install the correct 
  79. Help information.

  81. 4.  Insert your drivers disk when prompted, and click "OK." When 
  82. installation is complete, Windows adds the new driver entry to the 
  83. "Printers" dialog box.

  85. 5. Click "Configure..." to assign the printer to a port.
  86.  
  87. 6. With the drivers disk still in the A: drive, click "Setup..." in the 
  88. "Printers - Configure" dialog box to make printer-specific settings.  
  89. (WARNING: This step is extremely important.  If you try to make these 
  90. settings later from the "Target printer" dialog box in PageMaker, your 
  91. printed output may be completely unreadable.)

  93. 7.  Click "OK" in each open dialog box, close the Control Panel Window, 
  94. and restart Windows.
  95.  
  96. These drivers are provided as a courtesy to our customers.  You can obtain 
  97. updates to these drivers from Microsoft Corporation.  If you have 
  98. technical questions about the HPPCL5A driver, call the Microsoft Windows 
  99. Support line at (206) 637-7098.  You can also call the Hewlett-Packard 
  100. Peripherals Assist Line at (208) 323-2551 weekdays from 5 AM to 4PM (EST), 
  101. except for Wednesdays, when the hours are 5 AM to 2 PM.

  104. ABOUT THE NEW POSTSCRIPT DRIVER (PSCRIPT.DRV, v. 3.4a)
  105. ===============================================
  106.  
  107. High resolution imagesetters, such as a Linotronic, usually have just four 
  108. ROM-resident printer fonts. Any additional fonts must be  downloaded to 
  109. the imagesetter. To facilitate use downloadable printer fonts with 
  110. PageMaker 4.0, we have included the 3.4a version Windows PostScript 
  111. driver, which has the 22 PostScript printer font metric (.PFM) file 
  112. information and additional "extra" and transverse page sizes now built-in 
  113. for the imagesetters currently supported.  
  114.  
  115. The printer font metric information in this driver contains  character 
  116. spacing and kerning specification PageMaker and other Microsoft Windows 
  117. applications need to space characters proportionally on the screen and in 
  118. print. PFM files are not downloadable printer fonts. If you are not 
  119. sending your publication to a service bureau for imagesetter output, 
  120. you'll need the corresponding printer fonts for your printer in order for 
  121. those fonts to appear in your printed output. Before you prepare your 
  122. PageMaker files for output by a service bureau, you should verify which 
  123. format they prefer to receive your publication files in, and the printer 
  124. fonts they have available. Some service bureaus may request 
  125. printed-to-disk files in PostScript format which they can simply download 
  126. to the imagesetter.

  128. In any case, you'll need to advise your service bureau of the fonts that 
  129. were used in your publication. 
  130.  
  131. Two screen font files (.FON) have also been included with PageMaker 4.0: 
  132. ITC Zapf Chancery and ITC Zapf Dingbats.  Installing these two screen font 
  133. files allows you to view the fonts on screen as they will appear when 
  134. printed using the corresponding printer fonts.

  137. FONT METRICS AND  PSCRIPT.DRV, v. 3.4a
  138. ================================= 
  139.  
  140. The font metric information now built-in to the 3.4a PostScript driver is 
  141. used in imagesetter-targeted publications. When your system is updated 
  142. with the 3.4a driver, your type specs will be updated with the following 
  143. typefaces when your publication is targeted to an imagesetter: 
  144.  
  145. -Helvetica Narrow 
  146.  
  147. -New Century Schoolbook 
  148.  
  149. -Palatino 
  150.  
  151. -ITC Avant Garde 
  152.  
  153. -ITC Bookman 
  154.  
  155. -ITC Zapf Chancery 
  156.  
  157. -ITC Zapf Dingbats

  161. INSTALLING SCREEN FONTS
  162. =================================
  163.  
  164. The two screen font (.FON) files (i.e. ITC Zapf Chancery and ITC Zapf 
  165. Dingbats) must be installed in order to view them in  PageMaker or other 
  166. Windows applications. NOTE: If you've installed these fonts, you can refer 
  167. to the Adobe Type Manager(ATM) Control Panel and skip this section.

  169. To install the two .FON file: 
  170.  
  171. 1)     Launch Windows and double-click on the Control Panel icon  (or type 
  172. "win control" at the DOS prompt).
  173.  
  174. 2)     Double-click on the "Fonts" icon. 
  175.  
  176. 3)     Choose "Add..." in the Fonts dialog box. The "Add Font  Files" dialog box appears. 
  177.  
  178. 4)     Insert the "Drivers disk" included with PageMaker 4.0 into the  
  179. floppy drive. In the "Directories:" scroll box, choose the correct file  
  180. location where the .FON files are located (i.e. the floppy drive). 
  181.  
  182. 5)     In the "Font Files" scroll box on the left, scroll to  zd______.fon 
  183. and zc______.fon and highlight (select) both  fonts. 
  184.  
  185. 6)     Click "OK." 
  186.  
  187.        The selected Screen fonts will be copied automatically into the 
  188. "SYSTEM" subdirectory in the Windows directory. They can be viewed in the 
  189. Fonts dialog box under "Samples of Font." Also, the [fonts] section of 
  190. WIN.INI will be automatically updated with the following text: 
  191.  
  192.    ZapfChancery-MediumItalic=ZC______.FON
  193.  
  194.     ZapfDingbats=ZD______.FON 
  195.  
  196. Screen font files are now installed and should appear as correct screen 
  197. representations of their associated printer fonts that are chosen in "Type 
  198. specs..." under the Type menu. 
  199.  
  200. NOTE: If you experience any difficulty adding screen fonts (.FON) after 
  201. you've deleted other screen fonts, exit Control Panel and repeat the above 
  202. steps for adding screen fonts.
