  3. INSTALLATION NOTES FOR PAGEMAKER 5.0
  4. JUNE, 1993.

  6. The following information was not available when the
  7. PageMaker 5.0 installation instructions went to press.
  8. Please read these notes before installing PageMaker.
  9.  
  10. ============================================

  12. STREAMLINING INSTALLATION PERFORMANCE
  13. ============================================
  14.  
  15. A low BUFFERS setting in your CONFIG.SYS file can
  16. substantially increase the time it takes to install
  17. PageMaker. For that reason, the Aldus Setup program will
  18. alert you if the BUFFERS setting in your CONFIG.SYS file is
  19. less than 20. For optimal installation performance, consider
  20. increasing the BUFFERS statement in your CONFIG.SYS to 50.
  21. (IMPORTANT: make a system diskette that contains a backup
  22. copy of the CONFIG.SYS before editing it, as an editing
  23. error can cause your system to function improperly. If you
  24. do edit CONFIG.SYS, you will need to restart your computer
  25. for the changes to take effect. Refer to your Windows or DOS
  26. documentation for details on CONFIG.SYS.) Disk-caching
  27. software, such as Windows SMARTDrive, can supplement the DOS
  28. file buffering system. If your caching program is set up to
  29. cache the reading of files from your floppy drive, you will
  30. not need to change your buffers setting. In general, using
  31. SMARTDrive or another disk-caching program helps ensure
  32. optimal installation. Windows is typically setup to run
  33. SMARTDrive automatically. If for some reason SMARTDrive is
  34. not installed on your system, or if you want to change its
  35. settings, refer to your Windows documentation for
  36. instructions.

  40. MAKING SURE HARD DRIVE SPACE IS AVAILABLE
  41. ============================================

  43. You will need approximately 2MB more free space on your hard
  44. drive than the Aldus Setup program informs you during
  45. installation.

  49. PREPARING TO INSTALL PRINTER DRIVERS
  50. ============================================
  51.  
  52. The HP LaserJetIII driver included with Windows 3.1 does not
  53. support the newer universal driver technology required by
  54. PageMaker 5.0. To install the HP LaserJet III driver
  55. included with PageMaker, follow these steps:
  56. 1)  When Aldus Setup opens the "Printers" Control Panel,
  57. remove any HP printer listings from the "Installed Printers"
  58. list box.
  59. 2)  Follow the steps with the heading "To install a printer
  60. driver in Windows," beginning on page 6 of the PageMaker 5.0
  61. Getting Started manual.
  62. 3)  When finished installing, use the File Manager to delete
  63. the files HPPCL5A.DRV and HPPCL5A.HLP from your
  64. Windows\System directory. (Note, if you receive an error
  65. message, restart Windows and try deleting these files
  66. again.)

  68. Also note that if the "Printers" module is suppressed in the
  69. Windows CONTROL.INI file, you can encounter minor problems
  70. with the Control Panel icon during PageMaker installation.

  73. USING PAGEMAKER 5.0 WITH OTHER ALDUS PRODUCTS
  74. ============================================

  76. If use the Aldus Setup program to remove existing Aldus
  77. dictionaries on your hard drive, note that you'll also
  78. delete the corresponding user dictionary (which stores
  79. custom spelling and hyphenation you specified during spell-
  80. checks). We recommend that you move the user dictionary (the
  81. filename extension is .UDC) to a different directory before
  82. you remove an existing dictionary with Aldus Setup. You can
  83. then use the Dictionary Editor utility (included with
  84. PageMaker 5.0) to convert the .UDC file so that PageMaker
  85. 5.0 can use it.
  86.  
  87. If you have Aldus IntelliDraw 1.0 or the Aldus
  88. PhotoStyler/Gallery Effects Accessory Pack installed on your
  89. system when you install PageMaker 5.0, you will have
  90. conflicts between versions of the ALDVM.DLL and ALDVMRES.RSL
  91. support files required by these applications. PageMaker
  92. installs a utility that resolves the conflict by updating
  93. the files so that the applications can share them. After
  94. installing PageMaker, take the following steps:
  95. 1)  In File Manager, open the ALDUS\UKENGLSH\UTILITY
  96. directory.
  97. 2)  Double-click the IDUPDATE.EXE file.
  98. 3)  For each file update message, click "OK" as prompted, or
  99. follow the instructions on screen.
  100. 4)  When the utility notifies you that the update process is
  101. complete, click "OK." You can then run your Aldus
  102. applications as usual.

  105. NETWORK INSTALLATION AND NETWORK COPY DETECTION
  106. ============================================

  108. The PageMaker 5.0 license agreement permits one person to use
  109. a purchased copy of PageMaker at one time. However, if you
  110. purchased a ten-user license package, up to ten stations may
  111. use the same copy of PageMaker at once. Refer to the license
  112. agreement card in the PageMaker 5.0 box for details.
  113.  
  114. You are responsible for ensuring that PageMaker is used in
  115. accordance with the software license agreement. If you have a
  116. Novell Netware network (version 2.15 or later), PageMaker's
  117. built-in Network Copy Detection helps you ensure legal usage
  118. at your site.
  119. Each copy of PageMaker has a unique identification number that
  120. identifies it on a Novell network. (Copies of PageMaker
  121. installed from the same disk set have the same network
  122. identification number.) When a copy of PageMaker licensed for
  123. a single-user is started, its network identification number is
  124. broadcast over the network in a semaphore. Users starting an
  125. additional copy of PageMaker with the same network
  126. identification number will be required to exit PageMaker
  127. immediately.

  130. Copy Detection, read the file NETWORK.WRI (installed in the
  131. PM5 directory) after installing PageMaker.

  135. LAUNCHING PAGEMAKER 5.0 AFTER INSTALLATION

  138. If you launch PageMaker from the File Manager, be sure to
  139. click the file "pm5.exe" as opposed to "pm5app.exe."
