- --- README.TXT FOR READRIGHT FOR WINDOWS ---
-
-
- The information in this file supplements and/or modifies
- the READRIGHT FOR WINDOW'S USER'S GUIDE and READRIGHT FOR
- WINDOWS INSTALLATION AND SCANNER GUIDE.
-
-
- BLANK PAGES
-
- Blank pages are not saved.
-
-
- CANON IX-12, IX-12F
-
- On page 5 of the INSTALLATION AND SCANNER GUIDE, users of
- Canon IX-12, IX-12F scanners are instructed to modify
- CONFIG.SYS when they actually should modify AUTOEXEC.BAT.
- Add this line to AUTOEXEC.BAT:
-
- <path>ixhnd2 </xy>
-
- This command is described accurately in the INSTALLATION AND
- SCANNER GUIDE.
-
-
- CANON IX-30 (SCSI PORT)
-
- Because your Canon IX-30 scanner is attached to a SCSI port,
- a dialog box will appear when you select the scanner in
- Scanner Settings. In this dialog box, choose the SCSI port
- that's selected on the back of the scanner.
-
-
- CHINON DS-3000
-
- You must set Brightness (Contrast) on your Chinon scanner,
- rather than in Scanner Settings.
-
- The Chinon DS-3000 with PS/2 Scanner Apator isn't supported
- by this version of ReadRight for Windows.
-
-
- COLUMNS
-
- If you're recognizing a page with columns and ReadRight
- doesn't output the text in the correct order, you'll
- have better results if
-
- * You define text regions yourself
-
- or
-
- * You run Find Text Regions (Image menu) and then modify
- the regions if they aren't correct
-
- It's also a good idea to verify the order of
- the regions and reorder them, if necessary.
-
-
- COMPLETE PC FLATBED SCANNER
-
- ReadRight for Windows supports The Complete PC Flatbed
- Scanner.
-
- Hardware
- The Complete PC Flatbed Scanner requires the interface card
- that was packaged with the scanner. Before you can run Read-
- Right, this interface card must be installed on your computer
- and connected to your scanner. Refer to the documentation that
- came with your scanner for instructions.
-
- Scanner Driver
- The Complete PC Flatbed Scanner requires a scanner driver,
- called CPCFSCAN.SYS, which allows the scanner and computer
- to communicate. This driver software was included as part
- of your scanner interface kit. ReadRight also provides a
- functioning driver, but requires you to manually modify
- CONFIG.SYS. The device command is:
-
- DEVICE = <path>cpcfscan.sys 3E0 1
-
- This Option Refers To
- -----------------------------------------------------------
- <path> The path to The Complete PC scanner
- driver, if it isn't in the root
- directory.
- cpsfscan.sys The driver name.
- 3E0 The I/0 memory address (the 0 is a
- zero, not the letter O).
- 1 The DMA channel number.
- ------------------------------------------------------------
-
- This scanner doesn't require an IRQ setting.
-
- If necessary, adjust FILES and BUFFERS as you're instructed
- in the INSTALLATION AND SCANNER GUIDE.
-
-
- COMPLETE PC PAGE SCANNER
-
- This version of ReadRight for Windows doesn't support the
- Complete PC Page Scanner. This scanner will be supported
- in a future release.
-
-
- DELETING REGIONS
-
- You can delete a region by pressing the Backspace key as
- well as the Del(ete) key. Remember that you must select
- the region(s) before you can delete them.
-
-
- EPSON ES-300C
-
- ReadRight supports the Epson ES-300C flatbed scanner.
-
- Hardware
- The Epson ES-300C scanner requires the interface card that
- was packaged with the scanner. Before you can run ReadRight,
- this interface card must be installed on your computer and
- connected to your scanner. Refer to the documentation that
- came with your scanner for instructions.
-
- Scanner Driver
- The Epson scanner requires a scanner driver, called EPSN.SYS,
- which allows the scanner and computer to communicate. This
- driver software was included as part of your scanner interface
- kit. ReadRight also provides a functioning driver, but requires
- you to manually modify CONFIG.SYS. The device command is:
-
- DEVICE=<path>epsn.sys n
-
- This Option Refers To
- -----------------------------------------------------------
- <path> The path to the Epson scanner
- driver, if it isn't in the root
- directory.
- epsn.sys The driver name.
- n The line printer port. Type 1 if
- your scanner is attached to LPT1,
- or type 2 if your scanner is
- attached to LPT2. This setting must
- match the jumper on your scanner
- interface card.
- ------------------------------------------------------------
-
- NOTE: The LPT port actually refers to the scanner interface card,
- not the printer port that may already be on your system. Be sure
- to choose a port to which you haven't attached any peripherals.
-
-
- ERROR CHECK
-
- The layout of the Error Check window has changed, so it
- doesn't match the illustration in your user's guide. The
- window works still as your user's guide describes it, with
- one exception: Words (user's guide) is now called Sugges-
- tions.
-
-
- EXCEL FILES (MULTIPAGE)
-
- If you create a multipage document with ReadRight and
- save in Excel format, the text document will be saved in
- Lotus 1-2-3 format. Excel will easily read the text document,
- but boldface and point size won't be retained.
-
- Single-page text documents saved as Excel will retain
- Excel format.
-
-
- INSTALLATION AND SCANNER GUIDE
-
- On page 5 of this guide, users of Canon IX-12, IX-12F scanners
- are instructed to modify CONFIG.SYS when they actually should
- modify AUTOEXEC.BAT. Add this line to AUTOEXEC.BAT:
-
- <path>ixhnd2 </xy>
-
- This command is described accurately in the INSTALLATION AND
- SCANNER GUIDE.
-
-
- MICROTEK SCANNER
-
- If you're using a Microtek MS-II, choose Microtek with ADF
- in Select Scanner (Setup menu) before beginning to recognize
- your pages with ReadRight.
-
- If you're using an ADF with your Microtek scanner and
- you're scanning stacks of pages, you must place a blank
- page at the end of the stack to cause your scanner to
- stop scanning. Microtek scanners don't automatically
- stop scanning when the ADF is empty. Refer to Chapter
- 4, "Scanning Stacks of Pages," in the READRIGHT FOR
- WINDOWS USER'S GUIDE to learn about stack scanning.
-
- If you're using one of the supported Microtek scanners, you
- must add information to WIN.INI. You can add this information
- with the program, MICROTEK.EXE, which was copied to the direc-
- tory where you installed ReadRight. To start this program,
- type MICROTEK at the DOS prompt in the directory where you
- installed ReadRight.
-
- If you'd rather modify WIN.INI yourself, add these lines to
- the END of WIN.INI.
-
- [MSCAN]
- ScanType = MS-w
- Interface = MS-x
- PortAddr = y
- SDMA = z
-
- This Option Refers To
- -----------------------------------------------------------
- MSCAN The name of the Microtek scanner
- driver.
- w Your scanner mode. Type the model
- of your scanner. For example, type
- MS-300C.
- x Your interface card. Use one of
- these settings: PC Cards--MS-PCE,
- MS-PCX, or MS-PCY; PS/2 Cards--
- MS-MCE or MS-MCY.
- y The port address setting on your
- interface card. For example, you
- might type PortAddr = 200.
- z The SDMA setting. Use one of these
- settings: 1 for Parallel 1/0, 2 for
- Parallel DMA. Do not use setting 4
- for Serial; ReadRight doesn't work
- in this mode.
- -----------------------------------------------------------
-
- NOTE: If you're using ReadRight with a Microtek scanner and
- decide to use another scanner, you cannot use the settings
- files that you've designed for the Microtek with the new
- scanner. You must delete all of your settings files, including
- RRDFLT.SET, and then reselect the new scanner in Scanner Settings
- (Setup menu). If you think you might use your Microtek scanner
- again, you might want to backup your settings files before
- deleting them.
-
-
- QUESTIONABLE WORDS
-
- The default character for Questionable words is nothing (the
- box is empty), rather than a ^. If you use this default,
- ReadRight will still find Questionble words during Error Check.
- If you'd rather check for Questionable words with your word
- processor, make sure you enter another character in the
- Questionable Word Marker box in Output Options.
-
- DEFAULT.SET, the settings file that you'll use during the
- exercises in Chapters 3 and 4, does use ^ as the default
- character for Questionable words.
-
-
- RECOGNIZING INTO MULTIPLE TEXT DOCUMENTS
- FROM THE SAME SCANNED IMAGE
-
- When you begin to use your own documents, you may want to
- recognize different parts of the same page into separate
- text documents. You can do this by defining a region around
- the part of the image that you want in the first text docu-
- ment, then recognizing the text in the region. Then, after
- closing the document (Close, File menu), you can
-
- * Choose New (File menu) to open another Document win-
- dow, define the next region, and recognize.
-
- * Define a new region or group of regions and recognize.
- A new Document window opens automatically when you begin
- recognition (if you don't open a Document window with New.)
-
- Refer to the READRIGHT FOR WINDOWS USER'S GUIDE for further
- information on scanning and recognizing.
-
-
- SMARTDRIVE
-
- The recommended setting for SMARTDrive is 768. The device
- command that should be in CONFIG.SYS is
-
- DEVICE=<path>smartdrv.sys 768
-
- This Option Refers To
- -----------------------------------------------------------
- <path> The path to SMARTDRV.SYS
- 768 The SMARTDrive setting
- -----------------------------------------------------------
-
-
- USER'S GUIDE
-
- In the section called "Word Processor Options" (page 5.27), the
- last sentence should read, "Instead, any selected ASCII Text
- Options are used."
-
- The first sentence on the top of page 5.32 should read, "If no
- regions are defined on the image or if you choose Find Text
- Regions, ReadRight uses the Content you choose during page
- decomposition.
-
- References to the Words box (Error Check) now refer to the
- Suggestions box.
-
