  1. This is the READ.ME file for v1.0 of WinSpeed(tm), part of Panacea Inc.'s 
  2. line of low-cost, high-performance Windows accellerators.

  4. Please read it before running the software.

  18. Installation:
  19. =============
  20.  
  21.   1)  Install Windows 3.0 for a standard VGA display, using the directions
  22.       in the Microsoft Windows 3.0 Installation Guide.
  23.  
  24.   2)  Insert the WinSpeed Display Driver Disk 1 into a floppy drive and
  25.       change drive to that drive. For example, if you have inserted 
  26.       WinSpeed disk 1 into drive A, then type "a:" at the DOS prompt.
  27.  
  28.   3)  Run install and follow the instructions provided.
  29.  
  30.   4)  Run Windows
  31.  
  32.       Example:
  33.  
  34.                C:\WINDOWS>win
  35.  
  36.   5)  Double-click on the Windows Setup icon in the "MAIN" Group.
  37.  
  38.   6)  Select OPTIONS, then select CHANGE SYSTEM SETTINGS.
  39.  
  40.   7)  Click on the down arrow button next to the Display Type. 
  41.       You will be presented with a list of Display choices.
  42.  
  43.   8)  Now choose the adapter and resolution you wish to use.  Move the
  44.       highlighted bar to your choice, and press Enter.  After making your 
  45.       choice, the current setup screen will reappear, showing the WndSpeed
  46.       Driver you selected as Display Type. If this is correct, press Enter.
  47.  
  48.   9)  Follow the prompts, and change the disks when needed.  
  49.  
  50.       (**NOTE** WinSpeed will only prompt you for the diskettes it needs.
  51.         Some diskettes may not be used at all, depending upon your SVGA
  52.         board and resolution selected.) 
  53.  
  54.   10) When the setup routine has completed, your WinSpeed Driver will be 
  55.       installed and ready to use.

  58. Restoring Your Old Windows Configuration:
  59. =========================================
  60.  
  61. If you want to restore your old Windows configuration to the state it was in
  62. before you installed WinSpeed, then follow these simple steps.
  63.  
  64.         1. Change directory to your Windows directory. For example, if your
  65.            Windows directory is on drive C in \WINDOWS, then
  66.  
  67.                 C:
  68.                 CD \WINDOWS
  69.  
  70.         2. For Windows 3.0, delete the SETUP.INF file that WinSpeed copied 
  71.            into your Windows directory.
  72.  
  73.                 DEL SETUP.INF
  74.  
  75.            For Windows 3.1, delete the OEMPANA.INF file that WinSpeed copied
  76.            into the SYSTEM directory.
  77.  
  78.                 DEL SYSTEM\OEMPANA.INF
  79.  
  80.         3. Verify that the SYSTEM.000 file exists. This is a backup copy
  81.            of your SYSTEM.INI file before WinSpeed was installed. If it
  82.            exists, then delete the current SYSTEM.INI and rename SYSTEM.000
  83.            to SYSTEM.INI.

  89. Windows Version
  90. ===============
  91.  
  92. WinSpeed supports both Windows 3.0 and 3.1. The WinSpeed install program 
  93. attempts to automatically detect which version of Windows you are running.
  94. If this fails, the Windows setup program will prompt you for disks for the
  95. incorrect version of Windows. To avoid this problem, delete the 
  96. WINDOWS\SETUP.INF file if running Windows 3.0 or delete the 
  97. WINDOWS\SYSTEM\OEMPANA.INF if running Windows 3.1. Then force WinSpeed to 
  98. install for the correct version of Windows. The WinSpeed install program 
  99. can be forced to install for Windows versions by using these commands.

  101. For Windows 3.0, type
  102.         
  103.         install -win30
  104.  
  105. or for Windows 3.1, type
  106.  
  107.         install -win31
  108.  
  109.  
  110. Boards Supported:
  111. =================
  112.  
  113. This version of WinSpeed supports the following boards at the
  114. specified resolutions. WinSpeed requires at least 512Kb of memory
  115. on the video board.
  116.  
  117. All Tseng Labs ET-4000 VGA boards:
  118.         640x480x256
  119.         800x600x256
  120.         1024x768x256    w/1Mb DRAM
  121.  
  122. ATI VGA Wonder Rev 4 or greater, VGA Wonder+, and the VGA Wonder+ XL:
  123.         640x480x256
  124.         800x600x256
  125.         1024x768x256    w/1Mb DRAM
  126.  
  127.  
  128. All Video 7 VGA boards:
  129.         640x480x256     (only resolution supported by 1024i and FastWrite)
  130.         800x600x256
  131.         1024x768x256    w/1Mb DRAM
  132.  
  133. All Paradise VGA boards:
  134.         640x480x256     (only resolution supported by VGA 1204 and VGA Prof.)
  135.         800x600x256     
  136.         1024x768x256    will be available in a future release

  138. All Trident 8800/8900/9000 VGA's:

  144. Manual Installation:
  145. ====================
  146.  
  147. If you desire to install WinSpeed manually, please follow these steps:
  148.  
  149.    1) Insert the floppy with support for your type of VGA. On 5 1/4"
  150.       disks, Tseng ET-4000, Video 7, ATI, and Paradise are all on
  151.       Disk 1; Trident is on Disk 2. On 3 1/2" disks, Tseng ET-4000 is
  152.       on Disk 1, ATI and Video 7 are on Disk 2, Paradise and Trident
  153.       are on Disk 3.
  154.  
  155.    2) Change drive to the floppy with the WinSpeed disk.
  156.  
  157.    3) There are several files which need to be unarchived. These include
  158.       a SETUP.INF file and DRV files for each resolution supported. Type
  159.       the following command at the DOS prompt.
  160.  
  161.          For Tseng Labs ET-4000:
  162.          
  163.            lharc x tseng4 setup.inf wspdt480.drv wspdt600.drv wspdt768.drv
  164.          
  165.          For ATI:
  166.          
  167.            lharc x ati setup.inf wspda480.drv wspda600.drv wspda768.drv
  168.          
  169.          For Video 7:
  170.          
  171.            lharc x video7 setup.inf wspdv480.drv wspdv600.drv wspdv768.drv
  172.          
  173.          For Trident:
  174.          
  175.            lharc x trident setup.inf wspdr480.drv
  176.          
  177.          For Paradise:
  178.          
  179.            lharc x paradise setup.inf wspdp480.drv wspdp600.drv wspdp768.drv

  181.       NOTE to users with 512K VGA boards: 
  182.  
  183.          WinSpeed requires a different 800x600 driver if you have 512Kb.
  184.          If you VGA has 512Kb of memory, then substitute "6w5" for 
  185.          "600". After the files are unarchived, rename the DRV file
  186.          with "6w5" by substituting "600" for "6w5".
  187.  
  188.          For example, for a Tseng Labs ET-4000 with 512Kb:
  189.  
  190.          lharc x tseng 4 setup.inf wspdt480.drv wspdt6w5.drv wspdt768.drv
  191.          ren wspdt6w5.drv wspdt600.drv
  192.  
  193.     4) Make a backup copy of your system.ini file. This file is in your
  194.        Windows directory. Also, if a setup.inf file exists in your Windows
  195.        directory, then make a backup copy of it as well.
  196.  
  197.     5) Copy the SETUP.INF file from the floppy disk to the Windows
  198.        directory. For example:
  199.   
  200.          copy SETUP.INF C:\WINDOWS
  201.  
  202.     6) Go to step 4 of the automatic installation procedure above and
  203.        follow the remaining steps.
  204.  
  205.  
  206. ATM Users:
  207. ==========
  208.  
  209. Installing WinSpeed may "uninstall" ATM screen fonts.
  210.  
  211. A workaround exists. When WinSpeed is installed, it makes a backup
  212. copy of your Windows SYSTEM.INI file in the file SYSTEM.nnn where "nnn"
  213. is the first integer between "000" and "999" which creates a unique file
  214. name. The SYSTEM.INI file contains information about your Windows fonts. 
  215. After installing WinSpeed and verifying that Windows is running properly
  216. but without your ATM fonts, copy the SYSTEM.INI file to SYSTEM.WSP. Then
  217. copy the backup SYSTEM.INI, which is probably SYSTEM.000, to SYSTEM.INI.
  218. Now edit the SYSTEM.INI file by replacing the following lines with the
  219. contents of the same line in the SYSTEM.WSP file.
  220.  
  221. Under [boot], replace
  222.

  227. Under [boot.description], replace

  236. Diamond SpeedStar Users:
  237. ========================
  238.  
  239. Diamond's TurboWindows are a special Diamond version of WinSpeed. If you
  240. want to install the retail version of WinSpeed, then you have to delete
  241. the TurboWindows drivers from the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. The following
  242. commands will do this.

  244.         CD \WINDOWS\SYSTEM
  245.         DEL WSPD*.*
  246.
