- Program Description:
-
- The Guardian is a security system designed to protect an entire disk
- (either a hard disk or a floppy disk) against unauthorized use. Individual
- files on a disk may or may not be otherwise protected by a password
- mechanism or an encryption routine. The Guardian uses an algorithm that
- logically "locks" a disk so that no files, programs, or directories on the
- disk may be accessed regardless of whether they are otherwise secured.
- Although designed to primarily protect a hard disk, it can just as easily
- be used to lock a diskette - a very handy feature for a disk that isn't
- locked up in a safe every day. The registration fee is $40.00 plus $4.00
- shipping/handling ($6.00 outside the continental United States).
-
- Features:
-
- The system consists of two programs one of which is a program which
- displays a log-on menu and would normally be the very first entry in an
- AUTOEXEC.BAT file. If the proper authorization is not entered, the disk is
- automatically locked and an alarm is sounded. The other program is a
- system support program that provides the ability to intentionally lock or
- unlock any selected disk. To unlock a disk, you must know either the
- master password that was in effect when the disk was originally locked or
- the password that was used to lock it. This program also provides the
- facility for customizing colors, and for setting installation parameters
- such as passwords. The system allows up to six different passwaords. Each
- of the programs contains an anit-virus guard.
-
- Registered users receive a printed reference manual and the latest version
- of the programs plus telephone support for problems. They also receive a
- bonus program which can be used as a temporary command interpreter at start
- up to prevent bypassing the sign-on program.
-
- Version 2 of The Guardian became available in June 1992, but only directly
- from Marcor Enterprises. It is a major upgrade and offers many more
- features, including a windows style interface, mouse support, the ability
- to lock/unlock multiple drives in one operation, customize screen messages,
- the facility to lock only a portion of a disk (i.e. leave any combination
- of files and/or directories unlocked), and many new controllable options.
- Its price is $49.95 ($14.95 to registered users of previous versions) plus
- $4.00 shipping/handling ($6.00 outside the continental United States).
