- EDLAB(tm), Shareware utilities, set 1
- NOUPDOWN
- EDLAB utility programs have been designed to assist our developers in
- obtaining various information about the PC, from an application (program).
-
- EDLAB programs have been designed to run properly as DOS background programs
- under multitask operative systems such as Windows and OS2. If care is not
- taken, then a DOS program running in the background, will consume just about
- all processor power from such operative systems.
-
- ICOFILE:250=DBSUPER.ICO
-
-
- Example: EDLAB's DBNSUPER
- takes NO processor power,
- when it is idle.
-
- Notice the PULSE program
- from OS2. Program PULSE
- monitors the processor
- activity.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Example: Standard DOS program.

-
-
- This standard DOS program takes almost all processor power, when it runs
- in the background, even when it is idle.
-
-
- Only DOS programs designed for proper background running, like EDLAB's DOS
- programs, are cooperating with multi task systems.
- EDLAB programs are designed to assist you. All areas have been taken into
- account.
-
- Thorough, professional designs like EDLAB's programs, run correctly in the
- background.
-
- * They always know your screen size and switches correctly between text
- and graphics. No hickups or annoying surprises.
-
- * EDLAB programs are protected with EDLAB-Vaccine against patching and
- virus.
-
- * They have a 256 byte text data area, ready to allow you to enter your
- file comments with EDLABINF.EXE.
-
- * Intelligent HELP with Cue Cards.
-
- * Proper background running in multi task systems.
-
- * They report program activity to EDLAB.AUD, the audit report. The audit
- report enables companies to move/remove unused programs.
-
- Much money, time and disk space can be saved by using the information
- available in EDLAB.AUD.
- An example: A company has bought a 5 user license for a program. One of the
- allocated programs is installed in PC-201, but never used. The reason for
- this is simple: The operator of PC-201 uses another program instead.
-
- Such an incident is normally never discovered and the program is wasted, but
- the EDLAB.AUD would point this out. The program can now be installed on
- another PC, where it will be used.

-
-
- All EDLAB utilities have built-in explantion of their use. Just run the
- program without any parameter and the help appears.
- Some utility programs shall, due to their function, return without a text
- message. Instead, these programs gives an ERROR code, which BAT files,
- applications and programs can use, to determine the result.
- The meaning and number of such error codes are explained in the help text of
- the utility program.
-
- Utility programs must be fast and use little memory, as they are often called
- from a program.
- Our utility programs have special code for redirection. This allows the
- result to be redirected (>) to a file, rather than the screen.
-
-
- The following EDLAB utility programs are commonly used:
- -------------------------------------------------------
-
- ASK_YN.EXE is used in BAT files. It allows simple interactive BAT files. Many
- manufacturers have designed a simple ASK program. We designed our own, to
- make it ours and just do the task our way.
-
-
- EMS_FREE.EXE determines the amount of free EMS memory available to your
- application. If the amount of EMS you need is available, then it returns
- the ERROR code 0. No text (output) is given.
-
-
- FEXIST.EXE allows you to test for the existense of a file.
-
-
- WIND_ACT.EXE test for Windows active. Windows is a multi task operative
- system. Some disk and I/O activity behave different, when your application
- or program has been called from Windows. Some low level commands, you may
- need to perform, may disrupt Windows. If you have identified such problems,
- then use WIND_ACT.
-
-
- VIEWTXTG.EXE is a text/picture presentation program.
- You may want to have fast display of bitmapped files. BMP_ICO.EXE can convert
- BMP files to EDLAB ICO files.
- BMP_ICO.EXE is not in this bunch of programs. Browse CompuServe, using the
- shareware information any of our utility programs give, if you run them
- without parameter.
-
-
- The volume label in drive D is OS2_DRDOS.

-
- The CRC codes (checksum) obtained with CRC.EXE from EDLAB.
- ----------------------------------------------------------
- Use CRC.EXE to verify the EDLAB CRC code of all the utility programs.
- (Well, the value of CRC on EDLAB programs may be remote, as all EDLAB programs
- have EDLAB-Vaccine embedded).

- Obtaining EDLAB Utility source texts:
- -------------------------------------
- In the professional EDLAB Training/Utility pack #1, are the source texts for
- many utility programs. The programs are written in Turbo Pascal, version 6.
- Necessary objects and units are in the pack.
- The programs are written by very experienced designers, who all have an
- electronics design degree or datologist education. All our designers have
- furthermore at least 3 years experience in designing programs or electronics
- for industry or military. This enhances the value of the pack, as the methods
- used are top professional and thus gives an insight into how programs should
- be written.
- All our shareware programs explain how to register (purchase) the
- professional versions. Many EDLAB professional utility programs are enhanced
- versions. All have the shareware notification removed. This allows you to
- use the programs in applications for the general industry. Many companies
- do not want shareware programs, as they are of the opinion that shareware
- programs are a potent PC virus source.
