  4. General Information & What You Need to Know:
  5. --------------------------------------------
  6. Directory Master Lite is a File Manager. It copies, moves, and deletes
  7. files quickly and easily. You can view text files, too. Furthermore,
  8. Directory Master Lite makes it easy to create, modify and move between
  9. directories.
  10.  
  11. All your computer information, whether it be data or programs, is stored
  12. as files. You can use Directory Master Lite to remove old files, move
  13. files to new directories, copy files to a floppy disk, or rename files.
  14.  
  15. Directory Master Lite requires a basic understanding of files, disk
  16. drives, and directories. You should know what a file is, what
  17. directories are, how directories are named, and what disk drives are and
  18. how they are named.
  19.  
  20. You should also be familiar with terms like Root Directory, Parent
  21. Directory, Subdirectory, and Directory Tree. You should understand the
  22. concepts of making and removing directories.
  23.  
  24. If you are new to these terms or need a refresher course, see the manual
  25. for more information. Otherwise, getting around Directory Master Lite is
  26. simple and intuitive. Once you spend a few minutes using it, you'll find
  27. it a quick and easy way to manage your files.

  29.  
  30. Commands:
  31. ---------
  32. ESC - Aborts any command.
  33.  
  34. Right-Arrow - Selects or marks a file.
  35.  
  36. Left-Arrow - Unselects or unmarks a file.
  37.  
  38. CTRL-Right-Arrow - Selects or marks all files.
  39.  
  40. CTRL-Left-Arrow - Unselects or unmarks all files.
  41.  
  42. Q - Quit Directory Master Lite.  ALT-X also exits.
  43.  
  44. C - Copies the file you are pointing to. Directory Master Lite asks you
  45. where to copy the file. You must then enter a path or drive (for
  46. example, if you want to copy the selected file to a disk in drive A:,
  47. you would enter A: as your drive).
  48.  
  49. M - Moves the file you are pointing to. Directory Master Lite asks you
  50. where to move the file. You must then enter a path or drive (for
  51. example, if you want to copy the selected file to a subdirectory on
  52. drive C: called "DOCS", you would enter C:\DOCS as your drive and path).
  53. NOTE: See the warnings in the manual about moving or deleting system
  54. files from your root directory (such as COMMAND.COM).
  55.  
  56. D - Deletes the file you are pointing to. Directory Master Lite asks you
  57. if you are sure first. Once you delete a file, it is gone! NOTE: See the
  58. warnings in the manual about moving or deleting system files from your
  59. root directory.
  60.  
  61. R - Renames the file you are pointing to. You can use your arrow keys to
  62. move up and down to rename other files. By using the TAB key you can
  63. change the date and time of files.
  64.  
  65. V - Views the file you are pointing to. Some files cannot be viewed in
  66. this manner. View only works with text files; therefore, if you see
  67. garbage on the screen, the file you are trying to view is not a text
  68. file.
  69.  
  70. S - Changes the sort order. Directory Master Lite normally shows the
  71. files sorted by name. You can also sort them by date, size, or
  72. extension. You can also sort in reverse order (for example, names listed
  73. from "Z" to "A"). "Sort" only changes the way Directory Master Lite
  74. displays the files and not the order on the disk.
  75.  
  76. L - Re-reads the directory. If you use Directory Master Lite on a floppy
  77. disk and you change floppies, press the L key to read in the new
  78. floppy's file information.
  79.  
  80. Alt-C - This command is just like Copy but it copies all marked files
  81. instead of the one you are pointing to.
  82.  
  83. Alt-M - This command is just like Move but it moves all marked files
  84. instead of the one you are pointing to.
  85.  
  86. Alt-D - This command is just like Delete but it deletes all marked files
  87. instead of the one you are pointing to.
  88.  
  89. F5 - This is used to change to a different disk drive. You just type in
  90. the drive letter you want to go to.
  91.  
  92. F6 - This lets you type in a new path and mask. It lets you change
  93. drives, path, and file mask in one command. For example, enter
  94. C:\DOCS\*.TXT to display all files in directory "DOCS" on drive C: that
  95. have the extension ".TXT" (such as MYFILE.TXT, YOURFILE.TXT, etc.). The
  96. "mask" is the "*.TXT" part of the entry. The "path" is the drive and
  97. directory (C:\DOCS).
  98.  
  99. F7 - This selects TREE MODE. Directory Master Lite either shows files or
  100. directories. When Directory Master Lite is in the Tree Mode, only
  101. directories that are in the current directory are displayed. The main
  102. purpose of tree mode is to move around through the directory tree to the
  103. directory you want to be in. Then you normally switch back to file mode
  104. for a list of the files in that particular directory (press ENTER).
  105.  
  106. In Tree Mode, you use your right and left arrows to move to different
  107. levels of the directory tree. The left arrow moves you towards the root
  108. directory, the right moves you down the directory tree. You exit Tree
  109. Mode by pressing F7 again or by pointing to a directory and pressing
  110. ENTER. See the manual for more information on the "tree" concept.
  111.  
  112. While in Tree Mode you can make, rename, and delete directories with the
  113. following commands:
  114.  
  115.      M - Makes a new subdirectory. Directory Master Lite will prompt you
  116.      for a name. Remember, you can't make a directory that has the same
  117.      name as a file that is already in that directory.
  118.  
  119.      R - Renames the subdirectory you are pointing to. You cant change a
  120.      directory name to the same name as a file that already exists in
  121.      that directory.
  122.  
  123.      D - Deletes the subdirectory you are pointing to. You cannot delete
  124.      a subdirectory that contains files - you must first delete or move
  125.      all of the files from within the subdirectory.
  126.  
  127. Additional Tree Mode Commands:
  128.  
  129.      \ - Places you in the root directory's list of subdirectories. This
  130.      is your "main" directory list.
  131.  
  132.      RET (ENTER) - Exits Tree Mode and lists the files residing in the
  133.      subdirectory you are pointing to.
  134.

  136. Screen Display Explanations:
  137. ----------------------------
  138. Directory Master Lite displays a list of files in the left-hand column.
  139. You can move up and down the list by using your cursor control keys. The
  140. upper right-hand box displays status information. The lower right-hand
  141. box displays a list of commands you can use.
  142.  
  143. Use your LEFT and RIGHT cursor arrows to select files. Selected (or
  144. "marked") files are displayed in high-intensity (bold) on the screen.
  145. You can copy, move, or delete the marked files all at once.
  146.  
  147. The status window (upper right-hand corner of the display) shows you how
  148. many files there are, their sizes, and how many you have selected and
  149. their total size as well. Also displayed are: total disk space in
  150. megabytes (that's what the little "m" stands for); free disk space; the
  151. current sort method (Name, Date, Size, or Extension); the current path
  152. (that is, the drive and subdirectory); and the size and last update time
  153. of the file you are pointing to.
  154.  
  155. Directory Master Lite has 2 modes: File Mode and Tree Mode. The program
  156. always starts in File Mode, which lets you manage your files. In Tree
  157. Mode, the left-hand side of the screen displays the current list of
  158. directories. Tree Mode lets you make or delete directories, and change
  159. quickly to different directories to get to the files you need to display
  160. (see above under "Commands").
  161.

  163. Advanced Features:
  164. ------------------
  165. When copying or moving a file, if you select a directory that does not
  166. exist, Directory Master Lite will ask you if you want to create the
  167. directory or create a file with that name. In the case of creating the
  168. directory, Directory Master Lite saves you the step of having to go into
  169. Tree Mode and create the directory first.
  170.  
  171. You can't delete a directory if it has files in it. You must first go
  172. into the directory and delete or move the files. Only empty directories
  173. can be deleted. You can't make a directory if a file exists with the
  174. same name.
  175.  
  176. In the status window, the total size of all the files is rounded by the
  177. cluster size to show how much space it takes on the disk. Marked files
  178. are rounded to 1k cluster size. This is done so that if you are marking
  179. files to be copied to a floppy disk, it will indicate more accurately
  180. how much will fit. This is why if you mark all files, the two totals do
  181. not match.
  182.  
  183. If you are using a laptop computer with an LCD screen and the
  184. screen doesn't look right, run DMLITE /L.
  185.  
  186. How to Print this Help Text:
  187. ----------------------------
  188. After you press Esc to leave Help, press Alt-P to print.  Make sure that
  189. your printer is turned on before you start printing.
  190.  
  191. Registering DM Lite:
  192. --------------------
  193. To register this software, fill out the order form with payment. DM Lite
  194. doesn't have a manual, nor does it need one. The only thing you'll get
  195. is that you'll be on my mailing list, and I'll be able to continue to
  196. eat and write more software.

  198. For the POWER User:
  199. -------------------
  200. Directory Master Lite is specially written for the novice user. The main
  201. design criteria is simplicity. Computer Tyme also has a series of
  202. utilities designed for the power user. These utilities include MarxMenu,
  203. a menu programming language; the DOS ToolBox, an advanced set of DOS
  204. utilities; and DM3, a very advanced file manager.
  205.

  210. More about DM3:
  211. ---------------
  212. DM3 is flat out the most powerful file manager period. This program is
  213. for the hard core power user as well as the novice.
  214.  
  215. DM3 allows you to link into the MarxMenu command language. This allows
  216. you to add most any feature you want. That is the main concept and what
  217. is unique about DM3. You can add your own features!
  218.  
  219. Features of DM3.
  220. ----------------
  221. In addition to the F7 tree mode, F9 is programmed to run Pick Directory
  222. from the DOS TOOLBOX. Pick Directory must already be set up on you
  223. system to run. Besides using Pick Directory to move to a chosen
  224. directory, you can create and delete directories.
  225.  
  226. The F8 key is used to select a path from a directory stack. This stack
  227. is a list of subdirectories that you have either been to or copied to
  228. since you loaded DM3.
  229.  
  230. F8 requires that you have accessed more than one directory since
  231. starting DM3. If you have accessed 2 or more, F8 will bring up a menu of
  232. directories in the stack to choose from.
  233.  
  234. When the choices appear, just type the number next to the choice in
  235. order to select it. Or, if a choice is close, you can select TAB to edit
  236. a choice. DM3 will ask you which one to edit and you can then type in
  237. what you want.
  238.  
  239. The F8, or directory stack can be accessed during a copy or move
  240. command. When you are prompted for a path, you select F8 and the
  241. directory stack appears. Pick Directory is also available to the copy
  242. and move commands. Just type a return when prompted for a path and Pick
  243. Directory will appear.
  244.  
  245. In addition, if your programmable function keys are set up to run some
  246. other change directory program, such as Norton Change Directory, DM3 can
  247. use it to point to where to copy or move to. Just type your programmable
  248. key when prompted for a path.
  249.  
  250. WildCard marking allows you to type multiple wildcards on the same line
  251. and mark all files that match any of the wildcards. You can also
  252. wildcard mark by date range.
  253.  
  254. DM3 uses a file called DM3.SET to control its AUTORUN and programmable
  255. function key features. It also can be programed for AUTOEDIT and
  256. AUTOVIEW commands. This allows you to select the best VIEW or EDIT
  257. program based not only on the extension, but what directory the file is
  258. in.
  259.  
  260. Alt-T allows you to set the TIME and DATE of all marked files.
  261.  
  262. Alt-S is used for setup. This allows you to change and save your
  263. favorite DM3 configuration. These setups include exploding windows,
  264. shadowed windows, sound effects, mono only, explode speed, colors,
  265. default temp file path, editor, and view programs, video snow checking,
  266. and editing the DM3.SET file. You can save your defaults back to
  267. DM3.EXE.
  268.  
  269. DM3 has a NOVICE mode that helps keep new users out of trouble.
  270.  
  271. In addition to full screen help, DM3 also has an on screen mini help
  272. system. This allows you to keep the commands in front of you.

  274. DM3 supports 43/50 line EGA/VGA modes.
  275.  
  276. DM3 is integrated into the MarxMenu language. This allows you to write
  277. your own custom popup menus. this way, you can add your own features to
  278. DM3.
  279.  
  280. The '-' (minus) key allows you to move one directory towards the root.
  281. The '*' allows you to switch between the last two accessed directories.
  282.  
  283. You can set the Overwrite file warning mode. This controls what DM3 does
  284. when you are about to copy or move over an existing file. It has 3 modes
  285. that can be set. Mode one always overwrites and never asks. Mode 2 asks
  286. only if the file you are about to overwrite is newer than the original
  287. file. Mode 3 always asks before an overwrite. Mode 2 is the default.

  289. About the DOS ToolBox:
  290. ----------------------
  291.

  295. DIRECTORY MASTER is a powerful hard disk managment utility. It brings up
  296. your hard disk files and allows you to mark selected files so you can
  297. copy them, delete them, or move them. It also allows you to rename
  298. files, change dates, and change attributes. You can also run programs or
  299. set up your function keys to run programs on selected files.

  301. DOLIST makes being at DOS easier. It gives you full line editing, like a
  302. word processor, for your commands. It also stores commands so that you
  303. can re-execute them. It remembers subdirectories and allows you to go
  304. back to them by pressing the TAB key. It offers programmable function
  305. keys, DOS extensions, multiple execution, and many more features you
  306. have got to have.

  308. PICK DIRECTORY allows you to move through the directory system by
  309. displaying a graphic tree and letting you use your arrow keys to move
  310. around. It also lets you create, delete, rename, and hide directories.

  312. MARXTSR is a set of memory and TSR management utilities that let you
  313. load and unload TSRs (Terminate and stay resident programs) from memory.
  314. Utilities to list menory allocation and turn TSR's on and off.
  315.  
  316. MARXEDIT is a powerful, easy to use text editor. It can be used as a
  317. simple word processor. Features include editing up to 6 files at once,
  318. Macros, programmable key commands, and 43/50 line VGA support.

  330. For the menu user who is interested in POWER!

  332. MarxMenu is a menu system that uses NO RAM. MarxMenu is compatible with
  333. all networks and contains a powerful menu language. This language gives
  334. you complete screen control as well as conditional menus. Math and
  335. string functions as well as multidimensional arrays are supported.
  336. MarxMenu can read environment variables, ports, ram locations, time,
  337. dates, the contents of text files, ect. and make decisions on them.

  339. Screen control includes multi-layer exploding windows with unlimited
  340. number of selections and unlimited windows. 43/50 line ega and vga modes
  341. are supported. MarxMenu contains a screen blanker, password security on
  342. anything, keyboard lockout. MarxMenu can run programs while staying
  343. resident and read the dos errorlevel codes they return or marxmenu can
  344. return custom errorlevel codes to a calling program or batch file.
  345. MarxMenu can view text files in a window, read text files into an array
  346. and let you choose a line from that array in a window. MarxMenu can
  347. write string arrays to text files.
