  12.   Subject: Frequently asked questions about QEMM and XtraDrive.

  14.   XtraDrive is a disk compression program published by Integrated
  15.   Information Technology.  While this program is generally
  16.   compatible with QEMM, some issues must be addressed.  Below are
  17.   some of the most frequently asked questions about XtraDrive and
  18.   QEMM.

  21.   STEALTH ROM:
  22.  
  23.   Q:  When I try to install XtraDrive on a system that has QEMM and
  24.   Stealth ROM running, I get the following error message:
  25.  
  26.   "Drive 1 is being controlled by a program that appropriates
  27.   INT13.  You cannot install XtraDrive on this drive."
  28.  
  29.   What do I have to do to fix this?
  30.  
  31.   A:  Remove the Stealth ROM parameter (ST:M or ST:F) from the QEMM
  32.   device line and try to install XtraDrive again.  You should only
  33.   need to do this during the installation of XtraDrive.  Once
  34.   XtraDrive is installed, you can restore the Stealth ROM
  35.   parameter.

  37.   Q:  So, I can use XtraDrive with QEMM's Stealth ROM parameter?
  38.  
  39.   A:  Under most circumstances, Stealth ROM works fine with
  40.   XtraDrive, but if you are using the XtraDrive EMS cache you
  41.   cannot use either of QEMM's Stealth ROM parameter (ST:M or ST:F.)
  42.   The XtraDrive EMS cache accesses the disk via the page frame and
  43.   this causes a conflict with Stealth ROM.  Normally, if a program
  44.   accesses the disk via the page frame, QEMM's DBF=2 parameter will
  45.   fix the problem.  This is not possible with XtraDrive.  The EMS
  46.   cache will also cause problems with drivers such as EMSNETX.COM
  47.   and Microsoft's MOUSE.COM using EMS.
  48.  
  49.   Q.  Are there any other possible conflicts with XtraDrive and
  50.   QEMM's Stealth ROM parameter?
  51.  
  52.   A.  Under certain rare circumstances you may need to exclude a 4K
  53.   region in the system ROM BIOS area.  If, after installing
  54.   XtraDrive and QEMM with the Stealth ROM parameter, you get an
  55.   Exception 13 or lockup you should refer to Technical Bulletin
  56.   #205, STEALTH.TEC.  (This technote is installed in your
  57.   QEMM\TECHNOTE directory when you install QEMM version 7.0)  This
  58.   technote will help you determine which area must be excluded.
  59.   Keep in mind, however, that the need to exclude the 4k block of
  60.   High RAM is very rare.

  63.   EXCLUDES:
  64.  
  65.   Q:  When I install QEMM on a system that has XtraDrive currently
  66.   installed, I get a lockup or Exception 13 when I reboot the
  67.   machine, loading QEMM.  What do I have to do to allow me to boot
  68.   the system?
  69.  
  70.   A:  Simply reboot the machine and when it beeps after checking
  71.   the memory, hold down the ALT key until prompted to press ESC to
  72.   unload QEMM.  (If you are using QEMM's DOS-UP, you will first be
  73.   prompted to press ESC to unload DOSDATA.)  Once you have unloaded
  74.   DOSDATA and/or QEMM, load your CONFIG.SYS file into a text editor.
  75.   If you have MS-DOS 5 or MS-DOS 6, you may load the DOS Editor, by
  76.   typing EDIT C:\CONFIG.SYS and <ENTER>.  At the end of the QEMM
  77.   device line, place the following parameter:  X=9000-9FFF.
  78.  
  79.   A sample QEMM device line would then read as follows:

  81.         DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM386.SYS RAM ST:M X=9000-9FFF
  82.  
  83.   After adding the parameter, simply save the CONFIG.SYS file and
  84.   reboot your machine.
  85.  
  86.   Q:  When I installed XtraDrive after QEMM, XtraDrive placed an
  87.   exclusion from 8000-A000 on the QEMM device line.  Do I need this
  88.   exclusion and will it take away any memory from my system?
  89.  
  90.   A:  Given the way that XtraDrive is currently designed, an
  91.   exclusion is needed.  If you are using DESQview or DESQview/X,
  92.   the exclusion will tell QEMM to not map memory into that area, so
  93.   the amount of memory available to each DESQview window will be
  94.   smaller. There are a couple of things you can do to increase your
  95.   window size if you are using DESQview or DESQview/X:
  96.  
  97.   1.  The default exclude is 8000-A000, a 128K block.  Our testing
  98.   has determined that usually an exclusion of 9000-9FFF will be
  99.   sufficient. This will decrease your window size by only 64K.  If
  100.   you are using the CONVENTIONAL MEMORY disk cache, and have
  101.   selected more than two 16K blocks of conventional memory, you
  102.   will need to change the exclude back to 8000-9FFF.

  105.  
  106.   2.  Load the XtraDrive driver BEFORE QEMM and take the exclude
  107.   off the QEMM device line.  This should decrease your window size
  108.   by only about 46K. Once again, if you are using the CONVENTIONAL
  109.   MEMORY disk cache, your driver size will increase with each 16K
  110.   block you add.  The default is one 16K block. If you select two
  111.   blocks, your driver will be 66K.  If you select three it will be
  112.   82K.  The maximum, four 16K blocks will result in a 98K driver.
  113.   Your DESQview and DESQview/X window sizes will decrease
  114.   accordingly.

  117.   BUS-MASTERING:
  118.  
  119.   Q:  If I have a SCSI bus-mastering controller, can I load the
  120.   XtraDrive device driver into High Ram?
  121.  
  122.   A:  No.  Even with double buffering, on a system with a SCSI bus-
  123.   mastering device you will not be able to load XtraDrive into High
  124.   Ram.  This is NOT a memory manager issue, but a limitation of
  125.   XtraDrive.
