- QEMM: General Troubleshooting
-
-
- This QEMM 7 technote is an abridged version of a technical
- bulletin that is available through our standard support channels.
- The information contained in this version pertains ONLY to QEMM
- version 7.0. If you need information relating to earlier versions
- of QEMM you can obtain the unabridged version from the following
- sources:
-
- Quarterdeck Technical Support BBS: TROUBLE.TEC
- CompuServe: TROUBL.TEC
- Q/FAX: #241
-
-
- Subject: A general, easy-to-follow, and efficient guide to
- troubleshooting problems with QEMM 7.0.
-
- This is a very general guide to troubleshooting QEMM, and
- provides either quick fixes or references for additional
- information. See the Appendix for information on obtaining
- technical bulletins discussed in this document.
-
- PLEASE NOTE: The information contained in this technical
- bulletin pertains ONLY to QEMM version 7.0. If you require
- information relating to earlier versions of QEMM, you should
- obtain the longer, unabridged version through our standard
- support channels.

- Exception 13 errors can occur for a wide variety of reasons,
- almost all of which are addressed here. If you wish to learn
- more about the causes of Exception 13 errors, refer to the
- technote EXCEPT13.TEC; for detailed troubleshooting, refer to
- EX13FLOW.TEC.
-
- There is a line in your CONFIG.SYS that reads:
-
- DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM386.SYS [parameters]
-
- Steps 1-6 in this technote involve editing the [parameters] on
- this line, and nothing else. Every time you change the
- parameters on this line, you must re-boot your computer for them
- to take effect.
-
- 1) Remove QEMM by placing the word "rem" before the word
- "device" on this line; re-boot. If this does not solve your
- problem, QEMM is not involved. If this does solve your problem,
- remove the "rem".
-
- 2) If there is a Stealth parameter ("ST:M" or "ST:F"), remove it
- and reboot. If this solves your problem, refer to our technote
- STEALTH.TEC and follow its instructions.
-
- 3) Add the parameter "DB=2" to this line and re-boot. If this
- solves your problem, refer to our technote BUS-MAST.TEC for an
- explanation.
-
- 4) Add the parameter "X=A000-FFFF" to this line and re-boot. If
- this solves your problem, refer to our technote "EXCLUDE.TEC" and
- follow its instructions.
-
- 5) Remove all the parameters on the QEMM386.SYS line. Add the
- following ALL ON THE SAME LINE:
-
- DB=2 DMA=128 IOTRAP=64 LD FILL:N CF:N VDS:N MR:N RH:N SH:N
- TR:N XBDA:N UX ON
-
- then reboot. If this set of parameters solves your problem,
- consult the manual for an explanation of the meaning of these
- parameters. All of these parameters, even taken together, do not
- seriously handicap the usefulness of QEMM. All together, they
- cause QEMM to use only 2K more conventional memory, 116K more
- extended memory, and will not cause QEMM to be any slower. You
- can find the one(s) you need by eliminating them, one at a time.
-
- 6) If you are still experiencing the problem, add the parameter
- EMS:N and re-boot. If this solves your problem, some program that
- uses expanded memory is probably misbehaving, since this
- parameter causes QEMM to cease providing expanded memory. Go to
- step 7, and check to see if the other program involved uses EMS.
-
- 7) Rename your AUTOEXEC.BAT to TEST.BAT. Make a backup copy of
- your old CONFIG.SYS by typing:
-
- COPY CONFIG.SYS CONFIG.XXX
-
- Edit your CONFIG.SYS so that it contains ONLY the QEMM line and
- "FILES=40", then reboot your computer. If this solves the
- problem, restore your old CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files one
- line at a time to find out what other program is causing your
- problem.
-
- 8) If you are not able to solve your problem using these
- techniques and referenced technical bulletins, contact Technical
- Support by voice (310-392-9701), FAX (310-314-3217) or our
- Technical Support BBS (310-314-3227.) If you have solved your
- problem but are unsure of the consequences of using the
- parameters needed to solve it, you may want to contact Technical
- Support for further information.
