  19. ***** WARM BOOT TRAP *****
  20. TSRs, device drivers, or programs that trap warm boots (Ctrl+Alt+Del)
  21. may override automatic protection's ability to check for boot viruses 
  22. on floppy disks. Likewise, programs that perform a warm boot without 
  23. (Ctrl+Alt+Del) will bypass the automatic check for boot viruses.
  24.  
  25. ***** INOCULATION FILES *****
  26. The inoculation files are: NAVSYS.DAT and NAVINOC.DAT. They are stored
  27. in the NCDTREE directory by default. 
  28.  
  29. ***** INFECTION LOG *****
  30. The infection log records known and unknown virus detections. It does
  31. not record inoculation activities as stated in "Viewing the Infection 
  32. Log" in Chapter 6 of the manual.
  33.  
  34. ***** DOS ERROR LEVEL CODES *****
  35. In addition to the DOS error level codes outlined in "DOS Command-Line 
  36. Switches" in Appendix C, the following error code could also be 
  37. returned:

  42. This error usually occurs when there is not enough memory to load 
  43. Norton AntiVirus. 470K of memory is required.
  44.  
  45. ***** AUTOMATIC PROTECTION AND MEMORY OPTIMIZATION *****
  46. The automatic protection TSR does not require memory optimization to use
  47. UMBs efficiently.  If you are planning to optimize memory, we recommend
  48. doing so before installing Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is
  49. already installed, remove automatic protection from CONFIG.SYS or 
  50. AUTOEXEC.BAT and then reboot before running the optimization program. 
  51. Once the memory optimization is complete, add the command to load 
  52. automatic protection back to the appropriate file and reboot again.
  53.  
  54. ***** AUTOMATIC PROTECTION MEMORY USAGE ***** 
  55. If your computer has a limited amount of memory available for the 
  56. automatic protection TSR, use the table below to determine which 
  57. options to turn off in order to reduce the amount of memory used. 
  58. Be aware that turning off options reduces the level of protection.
  59.  
  60. The automatic protection options are in the Options - Auto-Protect 
  61. Settings dialog box and the Options - Inoculation Settings dialog box.

  83. NOTE: When using the 12K version of the auto-protect TSR, if a virus is 
  84. found when checking floppies for virus upon access or when rebooting, 
  85. you will only be notified. You can subsequently scan the floppy disk to 
  86. find and remove the virus.

  93. If you are prompted to inoculate a file while windows is loading and 
  94. your computer subsequently "hangs", type the following command line at
  95. the DOS prompt to inoculate the windows files: 
  96.  
  97.      C:\NAV\NAV /REFRESH C:\WINDOWS /S
  98.  
  99. If Norton AntiVirus is not installed in C:\NAV or Windows is not 
  100. installed in C:\WINDOWS, substitute the appropriate path.
  101.  
  102. After inoculating the windows files you can then load Windows.

  104. ***** NEC *****
  105. If your computer hangs when Norton AntiVirus checks the A: drive on a
  106. warm boot, add the following statement to your CONFIG.SYS file:

  110. ***** AUTOMATIC PROTECTION AND UPDATING SOFTWARE *****
  111. If you have configured Norton AntiVirus to detect unknown viruses using the 
  112. Virus Sensor Technology feature, you may get unknown virus alerts when 
  113. installing or updating software. This does not necessarily mean the file is 
  114. infected with an unknown virus. The installation process may be overwriting 
  115. existing files or expanding compressed files which may trigger an alert.

  117. ***** AUTOMATIC PROTECTION AND COMPRESSED DRIVES *****
  118. If you install Norton AntiVirus on a compressed drive and subseqently get 
  119. the error message "NAVOPTS.DAT file not found, default settings loaded," 
  120. install automatic protection as a TSR. For instructions, see "Using 
  121. Automatic Protection as a TSR" in Chapter 7 of the manual.

  123. ***** BYPASS KEYS WITH MEMORY MANAGERS *****
  124. By default, pressing both ALT keys will bypass the loading of the Auto-Protect
  125. feature of Norton AntiVirus.  The memory managers, QEMM and 386MAX, also use
  126. both ALT keys to bypass their loading.  If you are using either of these
  127. memory managers, you may wish to modify the bypass keys used by Norton
  128. AntiVirus.  For instructions, see "Monitoring During Startup" in Chapter 7
  129. of the manual.

  131. ***** INSTALLING FROM WITHIN WINDOWS *****
  132. If you are planning to install Norton AntiVirus from within Windows, turn off 
  133. any screen saver first.

  135. ***** CONFIG.SYS *****
  136. The FILES statement in your CONFIG.SYS file should be set to a minimum of 11.
  137. We recommend setting FILES to 15.
