  144. Before you call us for technical assistance, please do the following:

  146.     1) If you are unable to load DISK MANAGER successfully after typing
  147.        "DM" from the DOS prompt, you have a hardware problem. Follow the
  148.        guidelines described below.  Also, refer to the file "HARDWARE.REF"
  149.        for additional assistance.
  150.  
  151.  
  152.     2) Check your hardware connections (disk cables, jumper settings, etc).
  153.        DISK MANAGER will help identify a hardware problem. If the
  154.        error message "NO HARD DRIVES INSTALLED" appears, or if DISK MANAGER
  155.        is unable to recognize the presence of all attached hard disks, a
  156.        hardware problem is likely.

  159.     3) Execute DISK MANAGER DIAGNOSTICS to detect and correct cable
  160.        connection, controller card or disk problems. Note that the disk
  161.        scan test cannot be executed until the disk has been initialized.

  164.     4) Read this file, the DM.REF file, and the HARDWARE.REF file for
  165.        information that may be pertinent to your particular installation.

  205. THIS SECTION CONTAINS INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE AUTOMATED INSTALLATION
  206. PROCEDURE ONLY. IF YOU NEED INFORMATION ON THE CUSTOMIZED INSTALLATION
  207. PROCESS, SEE THE FILE "DM.REF", LOCATED ON YOUR DISK MANAGER DISKETTE.

  209. DISK MANAGER by ONTRACK COMPUTER SYSTEMS is a software utility that
  210. completely installs your fixed disk drive(s) for use with your IBM or
  211. compatible personal computer system.
  212.  
  213. A complete disk installation requires low-level formatting, partitioning
  214. and high-level formatting (preparation).  DISK MANAGER performs these
  215. activities AUTOMATICALLY, with several additional features available. The
  216. primary features of DISK MANAGER are as follows:
  217.  
  218. Automated Installation Capability - Invoke this utility by typing
  219.        "DM (ENTER)" to initialize, partition and prepare a disk
  220.        drive for use.
  221.  
  222. Customized Installation Capability - Provides the user with the ability
  223.        to create a custom logical disk structure to meet specific
  224.        requirements. This feature also allows the user to selectively
  225.        change the write-protect status of any disk partition.
  226.  
  227. DOS Compatible - Operates under PC-DOS and MS-DOS. No alterations to
  228.        the operating system are required.
  229.  
  230. Partitioning Capability - Permits up to 16 disk partitions per drive,
  231.        so programs and program data can be organized for optimum disk
  232.        utilization. Provides the capability of assigning partitions to
  233.        separate users, thus providing additional data security. Simplifies
  234.        the use of DOS by reducing the need for subdirectories. DISK MANAGER
  235.        permits a boot partition as large as the DOS limitation of 32 MB.
  236.        Non-bootable, DOS-compatible Write/Read partitions may be as large
  237.        as 512 MB with DOS 3.X.

  239. Increased Storage Capacity - Permits the attachment of disk storage up to
  240.        512 MB per drive.
  241.  
  242. Multiple Operating System Capability - Up to four operating systems can
  243.        exist on a single storage unit.
  244.  
  245. Reduced Back-up Time - Programs and data can be selectively backed-up due
  246.        to the partitioned disk structure.
  247.  
  248. Write-Protect Capability - Provides selectable write-protect capability on
  249.        each disk partition, preventing sensitive data from being destroyed.

  251. Selectable Interleave For Each Partition - Allows the user to optimize the
  252.        performance of the software that operates from each disk partition.

  254. Variable Cluster Size and Root Directory Size - Allows the user to optimize
  255.        the utilization of disk space.

  268.                    AUTOMATED INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
  269.  
  270. This section contains the basic instructions for using DISK MANAGER's
  271. automated installation procedure. These instructions apply for installing
  272. any SEAGATE disk drive (having a ST412/ST506 or SCSI interface) in any PC-XT
  273. or PC-AT (or 100% compatible) computer. If there is anything you do not
  274. understand, or if you encounter a problem during installation, use the more
  275. detailed instructions included in the DM.REF file on this diskette.
  276.  
  277. WE ASSUME THAT YOUR HARDWARE IS CONNECTED PROPERLY. TO EXECUTE THIS
  278. PROCEDURE, YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW WHICH MODEL SEAGATE DRIVE YOU HAVE, AND
  279. HAVE THE DEFECT LIST FOR THAT DRIVE.

  281. STEP 1: CREATE A BACK-UP DISKETTE
  282.  
  283.         For your convenience, DISK MANAGER is not copy-protected.
  284.         Create a back-up diskette by formatting a blank diskette and
  285.         copying the DISK MANAGER files onto it.
  286.  
  287. STEP 2: BOOT YOUR SYSTEM TO OBTAIN AN A> PROMPT
  288.  
  289. STEP 3: INVOKE DISK MANAGER'S AUTOMATED INSTALLATION UTILITY
  290.  
  291.         From the DOS A> prompt, enter:
  292.  
  293.         A>DM  <ENTER>             for monochrome display, or
  294.  
  295.         A>DM/C <ENTER>            for color display
  296.  
  297.         DISK MANAGER's automated installation utility will lead you
  298.         through the entire disk installation process. On-line help is
  299.         available every step of the way. To use on-line help, simply
  300.         press the F1 key. There will be a prompt on your display to
  301.         indicate when help is available.

  303.         DISK MANAGER will:
  304.  
  305.               A) verify that the drive you intend to install can
  306.                  communicate properly,
  307.  
  308.               B) prompt you to specify the drive model,
  309.  
  310.               C) optionally allow you to enter the defect list,
  311.  
  312.               D) prompt you for how the disk is to be partitioned,
  313.  
  314.               E) perform low-level format, partition the disk, perform
  315.                  high-level format, and leave you with a bootable
  316.                  hard disk.
