  4. NOTES ON USING APPLICATIONS WITH MS-DOS VERSION 5.0

  7. This document provides important information not included in
  8. the Microsoft MS-DOS User's Guide and Reference or in online
  9. Help.
  10.  
  11. Look through the following table of contents to determine
  12. whether your application is included.

  56. CAUTION: The Intel Above Board installation program that
  57.          shipped before May 1989 tests extended memory in a
  58.          way that can corrupt extended memory.
  59.  
  60. Before using an Above Board installation program prior to
  61. May 1989, make sure you haven't loaded software such as
  62. SMARTDrive or RAMDrive that uses extended memory.  After the
  63. Above Board has been installed, other software using
  64. extended memory is unaffected.
  65.  
  66. 2. AutoCAD release 10
  67. ---------------------
  68. To run AutoCAD release 10 for MS-DOS, contact Autodesk for a
  69. patch file. No patch is needed for AutoCAD386.
  70.  
  71. 3. AUTORUN.EXE
  72. --------------
  73. If you can't use Mountain Network Solutions AUTORUN.EXE, a
  74. tape-drive backup program, contact your vendor for an
  75. upgrade.
  76.  
  77. 4. CodeView
  78. -----------
  79. CAUTION: Using versions 3.0 to 3.13 of the CodeView CV.EXE
  80. file may cause data loss if your system has a 80386 memory
  81. manager (such as EMM386.EXE) and device drivers or programs
  82. that use extended memory. To determine which version you
  83. have, type CV.EXE at the command prompt.
  84.  
  85. To start CodeView versions 3.0 to 3.13 safely, use the
  86. CV.COM file included with MS-DOS 5.0, and HIMEM.SYS version
  87. 2.77 or later.
  88.  
  89. To use the CV.COM file included with MS-DOS 5.0, copy it
  90. from the Setup disks to the directory that contains your
  91. CV.EXE file.
  92.  
  93. This problem has been fixed in CodeView version 3.14. Call
  94. Microsoft C Support to get this version.
  95.  
  96. 5. Easel 6.0
  97. ------------
  98. Interactive Images Easel 6.0 is incompatible with the
  99. DOS=HIGH and EMM386 commands. Contact your vendor for an
  100. update.
  101.  
  102. 6. Fastback
  103. -----------
  104. If you have a version of Fifth Generation Systems Fastback
  105. earlier than 3.0, you must use the LOADFIX command before
  106. running Fastback or the Fastback installation program. Type
  107. the following:
  108.  
  109. LOADFIX FB.EXE
  110.  
  111. or
  112.  
  113. LOADFIX FBINSTAL.EXE
  114.  
  115. For information about the LOADFIX command, see the section
  116. "You receive the 'Packed file corrupt' message" in Chapter 4
  117. of Microsoft MS-DOS Getting Started.

  119. 7. GeoWorks
  120. -----------
  121. If you have a version of GeoWorks (PC/GEOS) earlier than
  122. 1.2, use the SETVER command to report version number 4.01 to
  123. the GEOS.EXE file. Type the following:
  124.  
  125. SETVER GEOS.EXE 4.01
  126.  
  127. Do not run the installation program for GeoWorks Ensemble
  128. when MS-DOS Shell Task Swapper is active.
  129.  
  130. Use the Exclusive Tasking option when running GeoWorks
  131. Ensemble with Windows.
  132.  
  133. 8. Lotus 1-2-3 version 3.0
  134. --------------------------
  135. For information about Lotus 1-2-3 version 3.0, see the
  136. section "Lotus 1-2-3 version 3.1 won't start" in Chapter 3
  137. of Microsoft MS-DOS Getting Started. This information also
  138. applies to Lotus 1-2-3 version 3.0.

  140. 9. Manifest
  141. -----------
  142. Versions 1.01 and later of Quarterdeck Manifest are
  143. compatible with MS-DOS 5.0. If you have a version earlier
  144. than 1.01, contact your vendor for an upgrade.
  145.  
  146. 10. Paintbrush 2.0
  147. ------------------
  148. If you have an EGA monitor and want to run Microsoft or
  149. ZSoft Paintbrush 2.0, you must remove the DEVICE=EGA.SYS
  150. command from your CONFIG.SYS file. After removing the
  151. command, you may have difficulty with screen swapping when
  152. using Task Swapper in MS-DOS Shell.
  153.  
  154. 11. Paradox 3.5
  155. ---------------
  156. For information about Paradox version 3.5, see the section
  157. "Lotus 1-2-3 version 3.1 won't start" in Chapter 3 of
  158. Microsoft MS-DOS Getting Started. This information also
  159. applies to Paradox 3.5.
  160.  
  161. 12. PC-Kwik Disk Accelerator
  162. ----------------------------
  163. Do not load versions of Multisoft PC-Kwik Disk Accelerator
  164. earlier than 2.0 into the upper memory area.
  165.  
  166. 13. PeachTree Complete III Single-User Version
  167. ----------------------------------------------
  168. If you are using the single-user version of PeachTree
  169. Complete III (batch 01 through batch 13), contact PeachTree
  170. for an update.
  171.  
  172. There is no compatibility problem with the network version.
  173.  
  174. 14. Pklite
  175. ----------
  176. Do not use Pklite to pack device drivers.
  177.  
  178. If you have a PC-Kwik cache on your system, and you can't
  179. run a packed program, do one of the following:
  180.    * Use the LOADFIX command to start the program.
  181.    * Run MS-DOS 5.0 in conventional memory.
  182.    * Run a version of the program that was not packed with
  183.      Pklite.
  184.    * Disable asynchronous reads on the PC-Kwik cache.
  185.

  190. 15. ProKey Plus
  191. ---------------
  192. If you have problems using a version of RoseSoft ProKey Plus
  193. earlier than 5.0, contact your vendor for an upgrade.
  194.  
  195. ProKey Plus is incompatible with MS-DOS Editor and QBasic.
  196.  
  197. 16. Sidekick 2.0
  198. ----------------
  199. If you are running MS-DOS 5.0 in the high memory area, use
  200. the following LOADFIX command to start Borland Sidekick 2.0:
  201.  
  202.     LOADFIX sk2.exe
  203.  
  204. For information about the LOADFIX command, see the section
  205. "You receive the 'Packed file corrupt' message" in Chapter 3
  206. of Microsoft MS-DOS Getting Started.

  208. 17. Soft-ICE
  209. ------------
  210. When using Nu-Mega Soft-ICE, load it before loading other
  211. drivers. Otherwise, you may lose data stored in extended
  212. memory by drivers such as SMARTDrive.
  213.  
  214. 18. Software Carousel
  215. ---------------------
  216. Software Carousel 5.01 is compatible with MS-DOS 5.0.
  217. If you have an earlier version, contact SoftLogic Solutions
  218. for an update.
  219.  
  220. If you installed HIMEMSLS.SYS, remove the
  221. DEVICE=HIMEMSLS.SYS command from your CONFIG.SYS after
  222. running MS-DOS 5.0 Setup.
  223.  
  224. To use DOSKEY, load it after you load Software Carousel into
  225. memory.
  226.  
  227. 19. Task Swapper and Asynchronous I/O
  228. -------------------------------------
  229. Some programs that perform asynchronous communications are
  230. incompatible with MS-DOS Shell Task Swapper. Terminal-
  231. emulation software (such as SmartCom and Procomm Plus) and
  232. server/client software (such as Laplink and Blast) are
  233. asynchronous communications programs. If you can't use an
  234. asynchronous program with Task Swapper, contact your vendor
  235. for more information, or disable Task Swapper.
  236.  
  237. 20. Ventura Publisher
  238. ---------------------
  239. If you can't start Ventura Publisher, make sure your Ventura
  240. Publisher directory is within the first 70 characters of the
  241. PATH command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  242.  
  243. 21. WordPerfect WPINFO.EXE 5.1
  244. ------------------------------
  245. Some versions of the WPINFO.EXE file included with
  246. WordPerfect 5.1 are incompatible with MS-DOS 5.0. Contact
  247. your vendor for more information.
  248.  
  249. 22. WordPerfect Office 3.0
  250. --------------------------
  251. Some versions of WordPerfect Office 3.0 are incompatible
  252. with MS-DOS 5.0. Contact your vendor for more information.
  253.  
  254. 23. XTreeNet
  255. ------------
  256. To use XTreeNet with MS-DOS Shell Task Swapper, select the
  257. Prevent Program Switch option in the MS-DOS Shell Advanced
  258. dialog box. For more information about specifying advanced
  259. properties, see Chapter 8 of the Microsoft MS-DOS User's
  260. Guide and Reference.
