  4. Communications Parameters help synchronize the data flow between the host 
  5. computer system and your PC.  These parameters should be set to match the 
  6. requirements of the host.

  9. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Baud Rate ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  10.  
  11. This is the transmission speed of the communications link between your PC and 
  12. the host computer.  The standard choices are 110, 150, 300, 600, 1200, 2400, 
  13. 4800, and 9600 bits per second.  Additional choices, such as 19200, 38400, and 
  14. 115200 may be available depending on the hardware of the personal computer.

  17. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Data Bits, Stop Bits, Parity ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  19. Note:  These three parameters are grouped in the only possible valid 
  20. combinations.  You merely need to select a set.

  22.  Data Bits 
  23.       Selects the number of binary information data bits contained in each 
  24.       character.  The value of this option can be either a 7 or 8. This almost 
  25.       always will be 7 if parity is used and 8 if no parity is used.

  27.  Stop Bits 
  28.       Selects the number of bits which should be appended to each character to 
  29.       detect correct character framing.  The value of this option can be either 
  30.       a 1 or 2.  This setting is dependent on the requirements of the host 
  31.       computer system but usually is 1.

  33.  Parity 
  34.       Parity is used as a method of error detection and is determined by the 
  35.       host computer.  The choices for this option are None, Odd, Even, Mark, 
  36.       and Space.

  39. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Help for Flow Control ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  41. Flow Control helps to synchronize the data flow between the host computer 
  42. system and your PC.  These parameters should be set to match the requirements 
  43. of the host.

  46. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Transmit Pacing ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  47.  
  48. This option controls whether or not Softerm responds to pacing while 
  49. transmitting data to the host computer.  The choices for this option are 
  50. XON/XOFF, XON/XOFF Pairs and None (the default). 
  51.  
  52. XON/XOFF is selected if Softerm is to perform resume and suspend operations in 
  53. response to XON (start) and XOFF (stop) characters received from the host 
  54. computer.  Since most terminals do not have the capability to respond to XON 
  55. and XOFF characters, this option should be set to None for most terminal 
  56. communications to host computers.

  58. Caution:  If the XON and XOFF character codes used by the host correspond to 
  59. terminal functions other than start/stop in the terminal emulation, 
  60. unpredictable results may occur.  This option should be used only if it is a 
  61. requirement of the host computer system.

  63. The selection of XON/XOFF Pairs is similar to XON/XOFF, except that XON and 
  64. XOFF characters are treated as pairs.  For example, if a second XON character 
  65. is received before an XOFF, it is treated as data, rather than as a flow 
  66. control character.  In like manner, if a second XOFF is received before an XON, 
  67. it is treated as data.  (Note:  This option is designed primarily for Hewlett 
  68. Packard environments.)

  70. If None is selected, no flow control is used.  Transmissions to the host could 
  71. overflow its receive buffer and data could become lost and/or garbled.

  74. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Receive Pacing ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  75.  
  76. This option defines the type of pacing control Softerm will use when receiving 
  77. characters from the host computer system.  The choices are None and XON/XOFF 
  78. (the default).  The specific choice depends on the type of connection and the 
  79. host system software.  If you are unsure of the host's requirements, check with 
  80. the System Administrator.

  82. The selection of XON/XOFF specifies the use of start (XON) and stop (XOFF) 
  83. characters for pacing control.

  85. If None is selected, no flow control is used.  Transmissions from the host 
  86. could overflow this program's receive buffer and data could become lost or

  92. The Session profile is trying to access a communications port that is not 
  93. available.  (The port may be in use or it may not be correctly installed and 
  94. configured.)

  96. So long as you select OK, Softerm will cycle through all the possible COM ports 
  97. until an unused port is found or until you select Cancel.
