- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Area Chart Information ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Select Area Chart when you want to show broad trends among several items over a
- continuous period of time. Area charts are popular in newspapers and
- magazines, because they are straightforward and easy to interpret.
-
- When creating area charts, start the value scale at 0. Starting at any other
- value can distort the plotted data.
-
- In stacked area charts, the appearance of the chart can change dramatically
- when the order of the bands is changed. To help interpret the area chart, plot
- the most stable band of data (the data with the least variation) at the base of
- the chart.
-
- A stacked area chart is a group of area charts combined into one chart. A band
- of data is a selected row or column of data.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Bar-Chart Information ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Select Bar Chart when you want to compare several items at specific points in
- time. The baseline is along the vertical axis, and the bars extend to the
- right to show an amount or a percentage. Bar charts are one of the simplest
- and most widely used charts.
-
- A bar chart uses the horizontal axis (x-axis) as a value axis to display the
- number of occurrences (or frequency) of each value. The vertical axis (y-axis)
- is a category axis and plots the values of the range.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Column-Chart Information ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Select Column Chart when you want to show the value of several items at
- specific points in time, and changes in them over a period of time.
-
- The horizontal axis (x-axis) plots the values of the range (for example, the
- months of the year). The vertical axis (y-axis) displays the number of
- occurrences of each value.
-
- A column chart looks like a bar chart rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise.
- However, a column chart is better to illustrate changes over time.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Line-Chart Information ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Select Line Chart when you want to show the slope or direction for several sets
- of data over a period of time. Line charts frequently appear in the business
- pages of newspapers, because they effectively chart large amounts of numeric
- information.
-
- If you have many numbers to plot, consider creating several line charts and
- presenting them on the same page. To interpret the charts quickly and easily,
- make the scales of the charts (and the lines and markers that represent the
- same information) consistent throughout the charts.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Pie-Chart Information ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Select Pie Chart when you want to show the relative proportion that each part
- contributes to the whole. Pie charts are popular because they are easy to
- understand and can be made attractive with colors and patterns. A limitation
- with the pie chart is that it cannot be used to compare multiple data series.
-
- Five or six pie segments are ideal -. 12 should be the maximum number. For
- better readability, begin the largest segment at 12:. The other segments
- progress clockwise from large to small.
-
- Select Sort from the worksheet's Data menu to arrange the data in descending
- order; the pie segments plot from largest to smallest.
-

-
- Select Exploded Pie Chart to move a selected portion of the pie chart away from
- the chart.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Table Chart Information ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- Select Table Chart to show exact data values that you can find quickly and
- easily. The chart uses an arrangement of rows and columns to display a precise
- set of values.
-
- Table charts can be used to present a small or large number of data values. If
- you want to emphasize the values for the rows, use vertical grid lines. Use
- horizontal grid lines when you want to guide the reader's eyes along the data
- for the columns. To help the reader even more, use a sans-serif typeface (such
- as Modern) and a large point size in the table.
-
- A table chart is often effective when combined with another type of chart, such
- as a column or line chart.

-
- A label is the information that is placed in and around a chart. Most charts
- contain three types of labels:
-
- o Category
- o Series
- o Value
-
- Category labels are formed from the first column of selected data in the
- worksheet. Series labels are formed from the first highlighted row. Value
- labels are automatically generated by PM Chart. The range of highlighted data
- values determines the range (or scale) of value labels in the chart.
