- This list shows the status of resources which you have assigned default DOS
- device names; for example, drive letters A and G, or printers LPT1 and LPT2.
-
- Those entries preceded by a '?' are not currently mounted.
-
- Entries may be followed by abbreviations representing the options selected
- when you defined or mounted it. These abbreviations are different for network
- disks and printers. Refer to the following sections for a summary of the
- options used.
-
- Option abbreviations shown for network printers:
-
- Close the print spool file (initiate printing) when:
-
- y - a time-out occurs (default is every 5 minutes).
- n - any DOS program exits (even a sub-task, when multitasking).
- w - a NET PRINT command is entered.
- k - the printer "hot key" is pressed.
-
- Filter the printed data so that it can be printed by:
-
- x - PostScript(tm) printers using Transcript(tm) printer software.
- This is the default for printers attached to Sun workstations.
-
- p - PostScript(tm) printers. Try this option if your applications support
- PostScript output, but you got errors using the x option.
-
- r - any printer. This options passes the print data to the printer
- unaltered.
-
- d - If your application produce Diablo 630 format output, and the printer
- is a PostScript(tm) printer which can emulate a Diablo 630 printer,
- try this option.
-
- Option abbreviations shown for network disks:
-
- '-' - no file sharing control is in effect for this disk.
- ro - the file system is read-only; no writing to it permitted.
- ms - file sharing control over all accesses to this disk is required.

-
- Values other than an asterisk are the information you or an administrator

-
- The values marked by an asterisk are retrieved by PC-NFS from servers in
- the network, either during startup, or when you run the appropriate NET

- to the right of the asterisk.
-
- Information about your PC is shown on the left half of the screen. Included

-
- You may mount to an unused DOS drive/printer, or to one which is presently

- create a new resource definition.

- @@prt_hotkey

- Use this selection to change the default printer "hot key".

- When your application prints files, PC-NFS needs to know when it is

-
- Exactly one keystroke combination may be defined as the "hot key". The

- You are not using the network information service, and the server name you
- entered cannot be found in the local \nfs\hosts file. Enter an Internet
- address for this server, and it will be added to the \nfs\hosts file for
- you.
-
- An Internet address consists of a set of two to four decimal integers
- separated by a single period; for example, "192.9.251.1".
-
- If you do not know the correct address for the server, ask your Network
- Administrator. Consider arranging to copy the network-wide master list of

- Enter a path string which identifies the directory or file system

- When data is redirected to a network printer using PC-NFS, the
- redirector software must determine when a print job is complete
- and ready to queue for printing. You may always use the
- NET PRINT * command to signal that a print job is ready.
- Choose one of the following methods:
-
-
- - After 5 minutes: if five minutes pass by without printing, all accumulated
- data will be printed.
-
-
- - On program exit: whenever ANY program issues a DOS "Exit" system call,
- all accumulated data will be printed.
-
- - On hot key: whenever you press the hot key combination all accumulated
- data will be printed. The default hot key is "Alt-P", but
- you can change it by choosing Modify and then
- "Set printer hot key" from the Resource menu.
-
-
- - NET PRINT only: whenever you run the NET PRINT * command, all accumulated
- data will be printed. The NET PRINT command is the only
- action that triggers printing.

- Four types of print data filters are supported by PC-NFS.
-
- - Standard text: The print data is passed through to the printer, and all
- control characters which would be rejected by the TranScript
- PostScript spooling software are removed from the data.
-
- - PostScript: This type is provided for those applications (for example,
- early versions of DRI's "Gem") which generate PostScript but
- do not include the header information required by TranScript
- PostScript spooling software (or its equivalent) in order to
- recognize the data as valid PostScript. Each print file is
- automatically preceded with a valid PostScript header.
-
- - Diablo 630: This mode assumes that TranScript 2.0 (or its equivalent) is
- running on the server. It instructs the server to assume that
- the print data is in Diable 630 format. On the server, the
- print data is passed through the ps630 filter, and processed
- to provide font and pitch control.
-
- - Raw: The print data is passed directly to the printer unchanged.
- If there is a TranScript filter running on the server, this
- would likely cause errors and/or failure to print.

- A PC-NFS file system can be mounted using one of three possible types of file
- access control.
-
- One requires that the server be running the Sun ONC Lock Manager (version 3
- or higher); it is the "Use lock manager" option.
-
- The other two do not require any special server software or features; they
- are the "Read-only access" and "No sharing control" options.
-
-
- The three control modes are:
-
- - Use lock manager:
- PC-NFS will use the ONC Lock Manager to enforce file sharing and
- provide advisory record locking. If the Lock Manager is not available
- or fails, PC-NFS disallows any access to the file system. This type of
- access control is recommended for databases, and for any file system
- which might be accessed by more than one PC at any given moment.
-
- - No sharing control:
- File sharing or locking is NOT provided. PC applications can create or
- modify files on the server unchecked (subject to the customary access
- controls enforced by the server).
-
- - Read-only access:
- File sharing or locking is NOT provided. PC-NFS will not allow any
- operation which would modify data stored in the file system. (This is
- analogous to putting a write protect tab on a floppy disk.)
- @@r_017
-
- PC-NFS can automatically mount file systems and printers for you each time
- it is started. It mounts every resource you have assigned a default drive
- letter or printer name to. These assignments are saved in a file named
- DRIVES.BAT located in the \nfs directory; each assignment is recorded as
- a NET USE command in that file. At the end of PC-NFS initialization, the
- DRIVES file is run executing the NET USE commands stored in it.
