  7. This file explains the features and installation instructions for the 
  8. updated printer drivers and screen fonts provided on this disk.  
  9.  
  10. The drivers provided here include:
  11.  
  12. * The PostScript driver (version 3.4b) provides a wider range of printer 
  13.   support, especially for Linotronic Imagesetters.  
  14.  
  15. * The HP LaserJet Series II (PCL 4) printer driver (version 3.4) is much 
  16.   faster than the earlier version provided on the Windows 3.0 disks.  
  17.  
  18. * The HP LaserJet III (PCL 5) printer driver (Version 3.77) has a number of 
  19.   new features, including an improved Font Installer that lets you install 
  20.   scalable soft fonts, improved compatibility with Adobe Type Manager, and 
  21.   the ability to print scalable fonts with Reverse type style.
  22.  
  23. There are two sets of driver installation instructions below: one for 
  24. replacing an existing driver with a new version, and the other for 
  25. installing a new driver when no previous version has been installed.  If 
  26. you are replacing an earlier version of a printer driver with a new 
  27. driver, install the new driver over the existing one; do not delete the 
  28. earlier version first.  The newly installed driver will have the same 
  29. configuration as the one it replaces.

  31. You must install these drivers using the Windows Control Panel; they are 
  32. compressed and therefore cannot be simply copied to your hard disk.

  36. INSTALLING A DRIVER
  37. =============================

  39. To replace an existing driver with the new version:
  40.  
  41. 1. In the Main window of Program Manager, double-click the Control Panel 
  42.    icon.
  43.  
  44. 2. In the Control Panel window, double-click the Printers icon.
  45.  
  46. 3. In the "Printers" dialog box, click "Add Printer..." and then 
  47.    double-click on the printer name appropriate for your new driver.  A 
  48.    confirmation alert appears, asking if you want to use the existing 
  49.    driver ("Current") or the updated driver ("New"). 
  50.  
  51. NOTE: If you are installing the PCL 5 printer driver (hppcl5a.drv) and 
  52. plan to use the Help available from the printer-specific dialog box after 
  53. installation, scroll to the bottom of the printer list and double-click on 
  54. "Unlisted Printer."  With this option, Windows will install the correct 
  55. Help information.
  56.  
  57. 4. Click "New" in the confirmation alert, insert the drivers disk when 
  58.    prompted, and click "OK." When installation is complete, Windows adds an 
  59.    extra entry for this driver in the "Printers" dialog box.  
  60.  
  61. 5. Highlight the driver entry with the port assignment of "None," and 
  62.    click "Configure..."  
  63.  
  64. 6. In the "Printers -- Configure" dialog box, highlight "None" in the 
  65.    list of printer ports, and click "Remove."
  66.  
  67. 7. Click "OK" in each open dialog box, close the Control Panel Window, 
  68.    and restart Windows.

  71. To install a new driver when no previous version has been installed:
  72.  
  73. 1. In the Main window of Program Manager, double-click the Control Panel 
  74.    icon.
  75.  
  76. 2. In the Control Panel window, double-click the Printers icon.
  77.  
  78. 3. In the "Printers" dialog box, click "Add Printer..." and then 
  79.    double-click on the printer name appropriate for your new driver.

  81. NOTE: If you are installing the PCL 5 printer driver (hppcl5a.drv) and 
  82. plan to use the Help available from the printer-specific dialog box after 
  83. installation, scroll to the bottom of the printer list and double-click on 
  84. "Unlisted Printer."  With this option, Windows will install the correct 
  85. Help information.

  87. 4. Insert your drivers disk when prompted, and click "OK." When 
  88.    installation is complete, Windows adds the new driver entry to the 
  89.    "Printers" dialog box.

  91. 5. Click "Configure..." to assign the printer to a port.

  93. 6. Click "OK" in each open dialog box, close the Control Panel and
  94.    restart Windows.

  96. 7. After restarting Windows, Open the Control Panel again and double click
  97.    the Printers icon.
  98.  
  99. 8. Select the printer you installed in step number 3 and click "Setup"
  100.    in the "Printers - Configure" dialog box to make printer-specific 
  101.    settings.

  103.    (WARNING: This step is extremely important.  If you try to make these 
  104.    settings later from the "Target printer" dialog box in Aldus FreeHand, your 
  105.    printed output may be incorrect.)

  107. 9. Click "OK" in each open dialog box, close the Control Panel Window, 
  108.    and restart Windows.

  111. These drivers are provided as a courtesy to our customers.  You can obtain 
  112. updates to these drivers from Microsoft Corporation.  If you have technical 
  113. questions about the HPPCL5A driver, call the Microsoft Windows Support line 
  114. at (206) 637-7098.  You can also call the Hewlett-Packard Peripherals 
  115. Assist Line at (208) 323-2551 weekdays from 5 AM to 4PM (EST), except for 
  116. Wednesdays, when the hours are 5 AM to 2 PM.  If you live outside of the US 
  117. or Canada, please contact your local Aldus distributor or dealer.

  121. ABOUT THE NEW POSTSCRIPT DRIVER (PSCRIPT.DRV, v. 3.4b)
  122. ========================================================
  123.  
  124. High resolution imagesetters, such as a Linotronic, usually have just four 
  125. ROM-resident printer fonts; Times, Helv, Courier and Symbol.  Any 
  126. additional fonts must be downloaded to the imagesetter.  To facilitate the 
  127. use of the most common downloadable printer fonts with Aldus FreeHand 3.0, we 
  128. have included the Windows PostScript driver version 3.4b, which uses 
  129. printer font metric (.PFM) information for the full LaserWriter Plus set of 
  130. fonts when targeted to an imagesetter.  The driver also has additional 
  131. letter-extra and letter-transverse paper sizes for the imagesetters 
  132. currently supported.

  134. The printer font metric information in this driver contains character 
  135. spacing and kerning specifications Aldus FreeHand and other Microsoft Windows 
  136. applications use to space characters proportionally on the screen and in 
  137. print.  PFM files are not downloadable printer fonts.  If you are not 
  138. sending your publication to a service bureau for imagesetter output, 
  139. you'll need the corresponding printer fonts for your printer in order for 
  140. those fonts to appear in your printed output.  Before you prepare your 
  141. Aldus FreeHand files for output by a service bureau, you should verify which 
  142. format they prefer to receive your publication files in, and the printer 
  143. fonts they have available.  Some service bureaus may request print-to-disk 
  144. files in PostScript format (PostScript on FILE:) which they can simply 
  145. download directly to the imagesetter.

  147. In any case, you'll need to advise your service bureau of the fonts that 
  148. were used in your publication.

  152. FONT METRICS AND  PSCRIPT.DRV, v. 3.4b
  153. ======================================== 
  154.  
  155. The font metric information now built-in to the 3.4b PostScript driver is 
  156. used in imagesetter-targeted publications.  After you have installed the 
  157. 3.4b PostScript driver on your system the Type Specs... menu will be 
  158. updated with the following typefaces if your publication is targeted to an 
  159. imagesetter:
