  38. Setting up PhotoStyler for the first time
  39. =========================================

  41.    Please run PSSETUP.EXE on Disk 1 (Program Disk) to install
  42. PhotoStyler (using the File/Run command in the Program Manager). It
  43. is a MS-Windows program. Enter the target directory in which you want
  44. to install PhotoStyler, and then press OK. For further details, please
  45. see section 2.1, "Installing PhotoStyler" of "Getting Started and
  46. Tutorials". When the program has been loaded onto your disk, the
  47. installation program can generate a PhotoStyler group containing 3 icons.
  48. If you decide you don't want a separate group, you can generate the icon
  49. in the MS-Windows program manager using the New command in the file
  50. menu. (See MS-Windows User Guide for further details.)

  54. Updating PhotoStyler
  55. =======================================

  57.    If you want to update part, but not all, of PhotoStyler, e.g., a
  58. new scanner driver, run PSSETUP.EXE, and select the "Update" option.
  59. The path to the PhotoStyler directory must be entered correctly. When
  60. you have completed updating the selected part, click Exit to return
  61. to the program manager.

  65. Note on 16-color VGA display adapter
  66. =======================================

  68.    If you run PhotoStyler in a 16-color Windows display environment,
  69. PhotoStyler checks your display adapter for VGA hardware compatibility
  70. to ensure it displays 16 shades of gray for gray scale images. If you
  71. encounter any problems during the loading of PhotoStyler in this
  72. environment, please add the following statements to the PSTYLER.INI
  73. file:

  80. Note on running in real mode with EMM386 driver
  81. ===============================================

  83.    If you run PhotoStyler in Windows real mode and install Expanded
  84. memory with the EMM386 driver in the CONFIG.SYS file, we suggest you
  85. open Windows using WIN /n/r. This should eliminate potential
  86. problems caused by not enough memory.

  90. Installing the Microtek scanner driver
  91. =======================================
  92.  
  93.    A statement must be added to C:\CONFIG.SYS for the scanner driver.
  94. The setup program will ask you if you want it to be added for you. If
  95. you choose Yes, you have a chance to view the contents of C:\CONFIG.SYS
  96. and back it up. If you choose No, you should add the following statement
  97. to C:\CONFIG.SYS yourself:
  98.  
  99.       device=c:\pstyler\mscan.sys
  100.  
  101.    If your PhotoStyler directory is not C:\PSTYLER, use your PhotoStyler
  102. target directory instead.

  104. NOTE: You must REBOOT the system, once this statement has been added,
  105. before scanning.

  109. Microtek scanner operation help

  112.    If you have installed a Microtek scanner with PhotoStyler, you can
  113. get the Microtek scanner operation "Help" from the PhotoStyler Help: Scanner
  114. menu.

  118. Using fonts with PhotoStyler
  119. =======================================
  120.  
  121.    PhotoStyler works with the Windows screen fonts that you have
  122. installed. To improve the quality of screen fonts at larger size, you
  123. can use screen font generation utilities.

  127. Special File Format Note
  128. ============================

  130.    To users whose image files are resolution-sensitive, please take a
  131. look at the issues listed below:
  132.  
  133.    1. GIF and TGA file formats do not retain resolution information.
  134.    2. PCX old format (follow spec dated before Dec 12, 1990) keeps
  135.       information that is not what we term "resolution".
  136.  
  137.    If you have files in the formats listed above, and if you really
  138.    care about the resolution information, we suggest the following
  139.    solutions:
  140.  
  141.    1. For new image files that have the resolution information you
  142.       want, save them in other file formats.
  143.    2. For old image files that have no (or the wrong) resolution
  144.       information, open them, then resample to the resolution you
  145.       want, then save them in another file format.

  152.    If you have trouble using PhotoStyler in a network environment, (for
  153. example, lacking the double dot ".." at the top of the directory list box
  154. in the open dialog box), please refer to the file "NETWORKS.TXT in your
