- Installation
- ------------
- To install the program on your hard disk, start Windows and
- select the Run command from the Program Manager File menu.
- Type A:INSTALL (or B:INSTALL, if your diskette is in drive
- B:). Chapter 2 in the manual describes the installation
- procedure in more detail.
-
- Install Problems
- ----------------
- A problem may occur during install if you are running DOS'
- Share and are connected to a network. If you encounter
- this problem characterized by difficulties reading the
- second disk, remove the Share command from your
- autoexec.bat file and try again.
-
- Install Size
- ------------
- Several additional components that were included with
- Graphic Impact at release have increased the amount of
- space required on the hard drive. To allow installation
- on a drive with less then 5.5 MB free, deselect the
- checkbox next to clipart on the install dialog. To add
- the clipart later it will be necessary to either perform
- a full installation or use DOS' expand utility included
- with DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.1.
-
- GIA2GIX and GIB2GIX
- -------------------
-
- Using GIA2GIX.EXE and GIB2GIX.EXE to convert Graph in the
- Box Analytic (.GIA) and Graph in the Box 2 (.GIB) files to
- Graph in the Box Executive (.GIX) files for import into
- Graphic Impact. From DOS (You cannot do this from a DOS
- Window.) Type the name of the appropriate executable
- followed by the path and filename of the file being
- altered. For example:
-
- GIA2GIX C:\GIA\CHART.GIA
-
- Will process the file CHART.GIA which is in the sub
- directory C:\GIA and create a new file CHART.GIX.
-
- Micrografx .DRW format
- -----------------------
-
- Graphic Impact includes a filter for Micrografx .DRW files
- version 2.1 and earlier. The filter will support later
- versions of the DRW format, but will eliminate those
- aspects of the file that are incompatible. The
- incompatibilities are limited to text alterations. In
- short, as long as there are no text modifications in the
- .DRW file everything should import correctly. One thing
- that can be done is to convert the text to paths after
- altering the text. Some Micrografx products will let you
- make text modifications and export in an earlier format
- that doesn't support those changes. This can cause
- problems and should be avoided.
-
- Stand Alone Slide Show
- ----------------------
- Included with Graphic Impact is an independent version of
- the on screen slide show. With this application you can
- take the presentation you've created in Graphic Impact to
- another computer that might not have Graphic Impact
- installed. All you need to do is copy your presentation
- and the file GIWSHOW.EXE to a floppy disk and go to the
- other computer. From Program manager select run from the
- file menu and type d:GIWSHOW where d is the drive
- containing the floppy. Click the Open button to bring up a
- dialog where you can choose the presentation you wish to
- run. A thumbnail image of the slide will display in the
- box on the left. The controls are the same as the
- slideshow within Graphic Impact. Left or Right arrow keys
- or left and right mouse buttons move you back and forth
- through the presentation. Click on the help button for
- more details. Since Graphic Impact and the slide show are
- dependent upon fonts being present for on screen display
- you should always check in advance to see what fonts are
- available on the machine you will run the presentation on.
-
-
-
- Multiple 256 color images
- -------------------------
-
- Graphic Impact will allow you to use as many colors as your
- display device will support. On 256 color machines
- importing multiple 256 color images to a single slide will
- sometimes cause Graphic Impact to average colors (color a
- and color b will be displayed as a middle color) Printing
- will not be affected, but the on screen slide show may. In
- this case it is recommended that you do not use a shaded
- background for this particular slide.
-
- The Help Function (F1)
- ----------------------
- Graphic Impact has a comprehensive Help function. No matter
- where you are in the program, help is instantly available
- from the Help menu, or by pressing F1. Invoke context
- sensitive help by clicking on the question mark in the top
- right corner of the window, or by pressing Shift-F1
- (holding down a Shift key while pressing the F1 key). Then
- point to the item you need help with, and click again.
-
- Scalable Fonts
- --------------
- The program presupposes that you are using scalable fonts
- (typefaces). Using fixed-pitch fonts may yield incorrect
- proportions in your presentations, and can cause text to be
- printed "outside the paper".
-
- True Type
- ---------
-
- If the installed printer is a Generic / Text only printer,
- True Type fonts will not be available in any windows
- application. To overcome this install a printer with
- graphics capabilities. Graphic Impact does not
- automatically use Windows' default printer so after
- installing the printer go to the printer setup dialog and
- select the new printer.
-
- Improved Printer Drivers
- ------------------------
- The program performs all print jobs using the printer driver
- programs included with Windows or delivered from your
- printer supplier. Most suppliers have developed new printer
- drivers that work better than those included with your
- Windows package. If you are using a Canon printer you must
- set the Bitmap Mode option if you need to access all
- scalable TrueType fonts.
-
- Files from Networks
- -------------------
- On some Novell Networks on a Token Ring system, Graphic
- Impact may not be able to open some files from a net drive.
- To correct this, change the following line in the GIW.INI
- file in the Windows directory VerifyPath=Yes to
- VerifyPath=No.
-
- Printing Patterns
- -----------------
- If you intend to use patterns with diagonal or vertical
- hatching you must do the following before printing.
-
- 1 If the hatching is dark-toned you must set the background
- to white. If the hatching is light-toned you must set the
- background to black. Do not use the color "None" for the
- hatching background.
-
- 2 When using some printers the backgrounds of certain
- objects drawn with the graphics tools (rounded boxes,
- ellipses and filled arcs) will not always match the
- hatching, and in some instances the hatching will not be
- drawn at all. Avoid using patterns with this category of
- object, or print at a smaller size.
-
- Printing Speed
- --------------
- Printing is in some cases noticeably faster if you do not
- have a shaded background. If printing speed is a concern,
- set the background to a solid color.
-
- Memory Requirements
- -------------------
- The complete program requires approx. 3.8 MB hard disk
- space. Do not forget to allow space for the Windows
- temporary swap-file if you are using it.
-
- Your computer should be equipped with at least 4 MB internal
- memory to run GIW. If you have less memory, the program
- will run much slower. Do not attempt to use the program
- with less than 2 MB internal memory.
-
- ATI Graphics Cards
- ------------------
- To correct an incompatibility between Graphic Impact and
- several ATI video drivers an item has been added to the
- GIW.INI file. CheckATI=yes. In the future when this
- incompatibility has been resolved setting this item to
- CheckATI=no will allow the use of a more efficient
- rendering scheme.
-
- How To Pack your Presentation Files
- -----------------------------------
- When you edit a presentation a certain amount of "garbage",
- i.e., redundant information, will be saved in the file. For
- example, clipart that you no longer intend to use. You can
- remove this by renaming the file with the Save As command
- in the File menu. More effectively, you can copy the master
- and all slides to an empty presentation. Do as follows:
-
- 1 Open the old presentation together with a new
- presentation.
-
- 2 Set the option Windows-Tile in order to view both
- presentations simultaneously.
-
- 3 Switch to the Contents or Slide Sorter view in both
- presentations
-
- 4 Go to the old presentation and issue the command
- Presentation- Master-Save Master As. Use a suitable name,
- e.g., TEMP.
-
- 5 Go to the new presentation and issue the command
- Presentation-Master-Open Master. Specify the name used in
- step 4 above, e.g., TEMP.
-
- 6 Go to the old presentation. Select all slides and drag
- them to the new presentation. You can also use the
- commands Edit-Copy in the old presentation and Edit-Paste
- in the new.
-
- 7 Go to the new presentation and delete the empty slide
- that was there before you copied the slides. It will be
- either the first or last slide in the presentation.
-
- 8 Remain in the new presentation and issue the command
- View-Split
-
- 9 Save the new presentation with a new name.
-
- If Things Go Wrong
- ------------------
- Nothing is perfect, not even Graphic Impact! Here are a few
- tips which may help you when you are in doubt or if you
- should encounter any quirks in the program:
-
- 1 Use the Help program. Press F1 or Shift-F1 to get help on
- the current function.
-
- 2 If the screen looks "weird": Save your work under a new
- name. (Option Save As... on the File menu). This will
- provide you with a backup copy of what you were doing.
- Exit Graphic Impact and Windows. Restart Windows and
- Graphic Impact and try to open the presentation file
- again.
-
- 3 If printouts don't print as they should: Exit Windows.
- Switch off the printer. Restart everything and try again.
-
- 4 If you still have problems you can call us. We need to
- know the following:
-
- - Your name
- - The version and serial number of Graphic Impact.
- - The Windows version you are using. (See "About Program
- Manager" in the Program Manager Help menu)
- - The DOS version you are using (use the DOS command VER
- to ascertain this)
