- Encore-PC Version 2.0.6
- Passport Designs, Inc.
- Documentation Update
- July 2nd 1991
- --------------------------
-
-
-
- REQUIREMENTS
- ------------
-
- At least 1MB extended memory (e.g., a 2MB machine). Runs in protected
- mode, so you need a 286 or 386 or better (any 486's out there?). VGA,
- EGA, or Hercules graphics adapter is required. Requires hard disk.
- To print, requires PostScript printer and the Adobe Sonata font , an
- Epson FX/MX/RX (9 - pin) compatible, HP Deskjet or HP Laserjet compatible.
-
- To print to an Epson LQ printer you will need a copy of "LQ Patch" from Epson
- and M.A.P. Systems, Inc. LQ Patch is a memory resident program which
- provides control code emulation to Epson LQ (24 pin) codes, including graphics.
- To order LQ Patch call 1-800-527-2851. Current retail price is $39.95 plus $3.00
- shipping. For more information contact :
-
- M.A.P. Systems, Inc.
- 18100 Upper Bay Road, Suite 100
- Houston, Texas 77058
- 1-800-527-2851
-
- LQ Patch can also be ordered from Epson by calling 1-800-873-7766.
-
- There is a similar program from M.A.P. Systems called EMUL4 for Toshiba 24-pin printers . The purchase cost is the same as LQ Patch.
-
- ENVIRONMENT SETUP
- -----------------
-
- The installation procedure should put Encore's directory in your path
- (e.g., path=c:\encore). It is probably added to your autoexec.bat file.
-
- Secondly, there are three environment variables that effect the running of
- Encore: DISPLAY, PRINTER, and PDEV. You may set the first two by
- running chooser.exe from the directory in which Encore is installed.
- PDEV is set to LPT1.
-
- DISPLAY determines what kind of graphics card Encore expects. This is
- normally not necessary as Encore can usually figure it out. Possible
- values are DSCGA (double scan CGA--AT&T 6300 standard),EGA,VGA,HERC.
- Encore can usually deduce the graphics adapter, so this is not
- strictly necessary.
-
- PRINTER values may either be "Epson", "HP Laserjet" or "HP Deskjet".
-
- 286SETUP.EXE
- ------------
-
- 286setup.exe is run by typing "286setup -k encore.exe" or "setup" (a
- batch file which does the same thing). You can use this to reconfigure
- the protected mode kernal in encore.exe to use different amounts of
- memory (if, for example, you wanted to reserve part of your extended
- memory for a ram disk). The default setting is to grab all available
- memory.
-
-
- TUNEIT.EXE
- ----------
-
- Tuneit.exe is run by typing "tuneit -k encore.exe" or "tune" (again, a batch
- file doing the same thing). You don't have to bother with this
- if you have an 80386 system, but you should run it once before you
- boot the first time if you have an 80286. There after you can forget
- about it.
-
-
- WHATMEM.EXE
- -----------
-
- Whatmem.exe tells you how much available extended memory your system
- has. If the amount returned is less than 560K free (NOT part of
- lower 640K that DOS recognizes) Encore cannot run. You may have to
- shrink the size of a ram disk or remove one before booting Encore.
- More memory also helps.
-
-
-
- TO BOOT ENCORE
- --------------
-
- Type "encore" to launch program.
-
-
-
- NOTES:
- ------
-
- Since encore runs in protected mode, it is incompatible with Windows 3.0
- running in standard mode (protected mode). If you are running Windows 3.0
- or launching Encore from Windows, you must reboot Windows with the
- /r flag (e.g.: "win /r"). This boots Windows in real mode.
