  25. 1. INSTALLING WINDOWS 3.1 DRIVERS FOR SOUND BLASTER PRO

  29.    Q1. How can I setup my Windows 3.1 drivers again?
  30.  
  31.    A1. You may setup Windows 3.1 drivers again by running INSTALL from
  32.        your Sound Blaster directory at the DOS prompt.  Select "Setup
  33.        Windows" and follow the instructions on the screen to complete
  34.        the setup.

  37.    1.2 USING DRIVER APPLET IN CONTROL PANEL (OEMSETUP.INF)
  38.  
  39.    Q1. My drivers are not installed when I use the driver applet in
  40.        Control Panel to add the drivers.  What do I do?
  41.  
  42.    A1. Before you choose to add any Sound Blaster Pro drivers, you
  43.        should first remove all the existing Sound Blaster drivers
  44.        shown in the "Installed Drivers List" and then restart Windows.
  45.        Chances are existing versions of Sound Blaster drivers are
  46.        installed when you start-up Windows and cannot be over-written.
  47.        You must also restart Windows after adding all the drivers for
  48.        these new drivers to take effect.  Refer to your Windows User
  49.        Reference Manual for more detail on the Driver applet.

  52.    1.3 GENERAL
  53.  
  54.    Q1. No matter what I try, I can't get sound in Windows.  What
  55.        should I do to fix it?
  56.  
  57.    A1. Here are some points you can check:
  58.  
  59.    a. If you installed Windows 3.1 using the "Express Installation",
  60.       Windows scanned your hard  disk for programs to be installed.
  61.       As a result, older versions of the Sound Blaster applications
  62.       may have been installed if they were on your hard disk at the
  63.       time of installation.  Please remove these icons.  To do this,
  64.       click on the icon once to select it, then press the delete key.
  65.       Windows will ask you for confirmation.  Repeat the above
  66.       procedure for each icon.
  67.  
  68.    b. Open the Driver applet in Control panel.  You should at least
  69.       have the following driver names in the Installed Drivers list:

  71.         Voyetra / Sound Blaster SuperSAPI FM Driver
  72.         Creative Sound Blaster Pro Auxiliary Audio
  73.         Creative Sound Blaster Pro Wave and MIDI
  74.         MIDI Mapper
  75.         Timer
  76.         [MCI] CD Audio    ;this is only for owners of CD-ROM drives
  77.         [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  78.         [MCI] Sound
  79.  
  80.       If one or more of the drivers do not exist, you must install the
  81.       driver(s) using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See your
  82.       Windows manual for more details).

  84.    c. Check your SYSTEM.INI by choosing RUN from the File menu of the
  85.       Program Manager and typing NOTEPAD SYSTEM.INI in the command
  86.       line box.  Examine the [drivers] and [sndblst.drv] sections.
  87.       They should look something like this:

  92.         Aux=sbpaux.drv
  93.         MIDI=sbp2fm.drv

  102.    d. If Windows refuses to install a device driver or if you get the
  103.       error message "Device not found" when playing a Wave or MIDI
  104.       file, or a CD, be sure that you have the following settings in
  105.       the [mci] section of SYSTEM.INI.
  106.

  108.         WaveAudio=mciwave.drv
  109.         Sequencer=mciseq.drv
  110.         CDAudio=mcicda.drv; this is only for owners of CD-ROM drives
  111.  
  112.       If one or more of the drivers do not exist, you must install the
  113.       driver(s) using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See your
  114.       Windows manual for instructions).  Do not type in the entries
  115.       into the SYSTEM.INI because the files have to be expanded and
  116.       installed into your SYSTEM directory by Windows.

  119. 2. DOS DRIVERS

  121.    2.1 BYPASS LOADING OF DOS DRIVERS
  122.  
  123.    Q1. I do not want to load the DOS drivers at system startup.  What
  124.        should I do?
  125.  
  126.    A1. To bypass the loading of the DOS drivers CTMMSYS.SYS and
  127.        CTSBPRO.SYS, press the ALT key during system starts up until
  128.        the driver prompts you for confirmation.

  133.    3.1 ELIMINATING UNWANTED NOISES
  134.  
  135.    Q1. When I record in either Windows or DOS, it hisses a lot.  What
  136.        can I do?
  137.  
  138.    A1. Using the mixer, adjust the recording volume for your input
  139.        source to the optimal level.  Bringing the record level close
  140.        to maximum will help to produce noise-free recordings.  Also,
  141.        set the record level for other input sources to zero.  This
  142.        ensures that the only recording is from sources that you want
  143.        to record.

  145.    3.2 AUDIO SOURCE SETTINGS
  146.  
  147.    Q1. I can't hear anything from the speakers, but when I run the
  148.        diagnostic program, it sounds okay.  What do I do?
  149.  
  150.    A1. Check the mixer settings for the various sources.  Use the
  151.        programs SBPSET.EXE in DOS or CTMIXER.EXE in Windows to adjust
  152.        the settings to a higher level.

  155.    3.3 ELIMINATING JERKY DIGITIZED SOUND PLAYBACK
  156.  
  157.    Q1. The playback sounds jerky.  Is my card defective ?
  158.  
  159.    A1. If you are in Windows, this may be due to your choice of
  160.        Windows swap file.  Temporary swap file tends to be fragmented
  161.        causing jerky playback.  If possible, use a permanent swap file
  162.        to eliminate this problem.  Refer to your Windows manual for
  163.        instructions on creating a permanent swap file.

  165.        Loading a disk cache program such as SMARTDRV will also
  166.        eliminate this problem.  To load SMARTDRV, refer to your DOS or
  167.        Windows manual for instructions.

  170.    3.4 ERROR MESSAGE APPEARS WHEN WINSETUP.EXE RUNS
  171.  
  172.    Q1. When I start Windows and WINSETUP runs, it gives me a dialog
  173.        box saying it can't find the environment.
  174.  
  175.    A1. The BLASTER environment is not set or is incorrectly set.  This
  176.        program requires that your BLASTER environment is set correctly
  177.        and tallies with your Sound Blaster Pro card.  You can type
  178.        "SET" at DOS prompt to check the environment settings.  For
  179.        more details on the BLASTER environment, refer to your Getting
  180.        Started manual.
