- Why GIF?
-
- Graphics Interchange Format was developed so
- graphic images could be viewed and stored on
- different hardware platforms without any further
- conversions. It incorporates compression for
- image storage thus greatly reduces the file size
- while maintaining the original image quality.

- Currently GIF supports only upto 256 colors (8
- bits), but remains a popular choice for image
- display and transfter because its small file
- size and the abundence of utility that supports
- it.

- Viewing GIF Files
-
- There are many shareware and public domain GIF
- viewers for DOS and Windows (ie. cshow, vpic,
- winGIF, etc.) They are available at most BBSs
- or various anonymous ftp sites. Please carefully
- read all documentations come with the programs
- before using them.

- Included is the PICEM public domain image viewing
- program written by John Bridges. To start PICEM,
