- SPSS for Windows
- Release 5.0
- June 26, 1992
-
-
- 1. Drag-n-Drop (Windows 3.1 only)
-
- SPSS/PC+ files and SPSS Portable files cannot be "dropped" onto the
- Print Manager in this version.
-
-
- 2. Support for non-ANSI character sets
-
- DOS files containing non-English-language characters may not translate
- properly into Windows applications such as SPSS.
-
- Windows applications in general use the ANSI character set, which contains
- all English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Swedish characters as
- well as some from other common languages. DOS applications use the
- characters in the current DOS "code page." These character sets contain
- differing characters and differing numerical character values.
-
- SPSS/PC+ system files are automatically translated from DOS to ANSI when
- used in SPSS for Windows.
-
- An undocumented utility program, SPSSTRAN.EXE, is included in this
- release to assist in the conversion of text files from the DOS
- character set to the ANSI character set and back. This utility works
- only on text files--no other file formats can be converted. The icon
- for this utility is added to your SPSS Program Manager group during
- the installation process.
-
-
- 3. Changes to EDATE format
-
- The manual states that EDATE (European Date) format is in DD/MM/YY
- format. The format is actually DD.MM.YY.
-
-
- 4. Oracle
-
- a) SPSS users must have version 1.5 or greater of the file SQLWIN.DLL
- to extract data from Oracle databases into SPSS for Windows. This file
- is provided by Oracle. Please see your Oracle representative if you
- require an upgrade.
-
- b) SPSS users may need to install and run a special Oracle program
- in order to perform more than one database retrieval in a single SPSS
- session. The conditions surrounding this problem are not clearly
- defined. However, affected users can run an Oracle network
- initialization program (NETINIT.EXE) immediately after launching
- Windows to eliminate the problem. Please see your Oracle representative
- if you require this program.
-
-
-
- 5. SQL Server
-
- The tables and columns listed for users logging into SQL Server as "SA"
- will be those accessible to the database owner, rather than all that are
- in the database. Although the SA account is technically outside of the
- SQL Server protection system, it is treated as "database owner" by the
- SPSS capture dialogs.
-
- This product has been tested on SQL Server version 1.1. It has not
- been tested on SQL Server 4.2, which has just recently been released.
-
-
- 6. Reading SAS Export files
-
- a) SAS export data with the print format of "Zw.d" are converted to the
- SPSS "Fw.d" print format.
-
- b) SAS export data with the print format of "WORDFw" are converted to
- the SPSS "Fw.d" print format.
-
- c) SAS export data with the print format of "WORDSw" are converted to
- the SPSS "Fw.d" print format.
-
- d) SAS export data with the print format of "JULDAYw" and a width less
- than 5 are converted to the SPSS "JDATEw" print format and their width
- is set to 5.
-
- e) SAS export data with the print formats of "MMYYXw", "YYQRXw", "YYQXw",
- and "YYMMXw" are treated the same as their corresponding base formats.
- For example, "MMYY" would be treated the same as the "MMYYXw" format.
-
-
- 7. Nonstandard video drivers
-
- The Chart Editor will automatically query your display driver for its
- logical PPI (pels per inch) and resolution when a chart is created.
- If the PPI is the standard VGA value but the resolution is greater than
- 640x480, it will scale the fonts based on the driver-supplied resolution.
- For instance, if the driver is running at 800x640, the PPI value will be
- scaled up by 1.25 (800/640).
-
- Adding the line:
-
- NoAdjustSVGA=1
-
- to the [spsswin] section of your SPSSWIN.INI file will disable this
- feature.
-
-
- 8. Running SPSS for Windows under OS/2 2.0
-
- SPSS for Windows appears to run fine under OS/2 2.0, although the
- performance of the product is somewhat slower.
-
-
- 9. Low-memory considerations
-
- SPSS can become unstable under unusually low memory conditions. This
- can be remedied on most systems by increasing the physical RAM on the
- machine or by enlarging the size of Windows' permanent swap file.
-
-
- 10. Reading SPSS/PC+ System Files
-
- On page 2 of the booklet Help for SPSS/PC+ Users, the line that should
- point to the SPSS radio button is erroneously shown pointing to the
- button for SPSS portable files. The correct button is SPSS.
-
-
- 11. Known problems list
-
- a) Printer driver problems
-
- HP PaintJet - In Windows 3.1, any text which has been changed to
- grey will come out white on the printer.
-
- HP DeskJet500C - Use of non-TrueType display fonts will cause charts
- to print extremely small. This can be corrected by
- using only TrueType or printer fonts.
-
- b) If SPSS runs out of disk space while performing a Save to an
- existing file, the original file will be deleted. You should free some
- disk space and try again.
-
- c) If SPSS runs out of disk space while a procedure is inserting high
- resolution charts into the carousel, it will warn you that it is out of
- disk space and can only produce low resolution charts. However, all
- previously produced high resolution charts will be lost.
-
- d) An extraneous black dotted line may appear in some area charts.
- Try resizing the chart window or changing the border color to be the
- same as the defined area.
-
- e) Under some circumstances, the SPSS Windows menu may not contain an
- entry for each of your document windows. The only known occurrence of
- this problem is when you enter the "Open Data" dialog box (File/Open/Data)
- and then "Paste" the results to a new syntax window.
-
- This leaves you in a state where the Windows menu cannot be used to
- bring a named window to the top of the desktop. Direct window interaction
- is unaffected.
-
- To remedy this condition, create then close a syntax window.
-
- f) If you are using Digital Research DOS and Superstor, and if the free
- storage on your PC is near the minimum required to accommodate SPSS at
- installation time, SPSS may not be able to detect an insufficient disk
- space condition until well into the installation process. Free up
- some disk space and try again.
-
- g) It is possible to crash SPSS by prematurely removing the floppy
- disk containing your data while SPSS still has the file open. In all
- cases, an alert box will be posted asking you to return the disk to
- the drive. If you "Abort" or "Cancel" this alert, SPSS can become
- unstable, especially under Windows 3.0.
-
- h) The install program will allow users NOT to install some statistical
- procedures they don't plan to use. The corresponding menu items in the
- Statistics and/or Graphs menu will then be removed. However, some menu
- items generate commands for multiple statistical procedures. Choosing
- not to install a procedure may cause some unexpected menu items to
- be removed from the system. The "Sort" procedure is used in several
- menu items. It should always be installed. Other exceptions are as
- follows:
-
-
- - The "Pearson Correlations" menu requires both "Correlations" and
- "Partial Correlations" to be installed.
-
- - The "Multidimensional Scaling" menu requires "Alscal" and
- "Proximities" to be installed. This is in the Professional
- Statistics option only.
-
- - The "Hierarchical Cluster" menu requires both "Cluster" and
- "Proximities" to be installed. This is in the Professional
- Statistics option only.
-
- i) Graphics preferences will not be applied to charts that are created
- in production mode, or charts that are saved as the Chart Carousel is
- closed. To ensure that they are applied, charts must first be selected
- from the Carousel (via the Edit button on the icon bar) and then saved.
-
- j) The MONTH and WKDAY output formats have been extended to produce
- month and day names from SPSS date values as well as from the values
- 1-12 and 1-7, respectively.
