-
- UPGRADING FROM PREVIOUS RELEASES OF SMARTEXT
-
- SmarText uses a new file format in this release. All documents
- will be automatically updated to the new format the first time
- they are opened by the SmarText Builder.
-
- The Release 2.0 Reader cannot read existing documents until they
- are updated by the Release 2.0 Builder. For information, refer
- to the For Upgraders help topic.
-
- You should make a backup copy of all existing documents before
- updating them to Release 2.0. In addition, if you need to change
- text in the source files for a document, you should update and
- save the document before editing the source files, even if the
- document was saved under a previous version. Once you have
- updated and saved a document in Release 2.0 format, it cannot be
- opened by previous versions of the Builder or the Reader.
-
- ============================
-
- The way line and paragraph endings of ASCII files are interpreted
- has changed from version 1.x. When documents are updated to
- Release 2.0, SmarText will use one of the three new ASCII options
- explained on page 17 in the User's Guide for Building Electronic
- Documents.
-
- By default, SmarText will use the option for Extra CR/LF Between
- Paragraphs. You may change this option, if you wish, by using
- Windows Notepad to edit the SMARTEXT.INI file in your Windows
- directory. In this file, you will find a line which begins
- "ASCII_conversion=". Use the table below to determine the
- appropriate option to use. The option you select will be used for
- all ASCII files you update, unless you again change the option.
-
- Option Setting Meaning
- CRLF_EXTRA Extra CR/LF Between Paragraphs
- CRLF_ONLY CR/LF Only at End of Paragraph
- TAB_ONLY Paragraphs start with Tab Character
-
- ============================
-
- Release 2.0 includes a new stopword file, MODIFIER.STP. This
- file contains approximately 4500 adjectives and adverbs not
- generally used as index words. SmarText automatically selects
- this file with each new document you create. For existing
- documents, you will need to add this file and have SmarText
- rebuild the document. Including this file in existing documents
- will improve the quality of words selected by SmarText as index
- words and automatic text links.
-
- To add MODIFIER.STP to existing SmarText documents
-
- 1. Open the document, using the Release 2.0 Builder.
-
- 2. Choose File/Include.
-
- 3. In the Files list box, select MODIFIER.STP, or type the file
- name in the Filename text box.
-
- 4. Choose Add.
-
- 5. Choose OK.
-
- 6. Choose File/Build.
-
- 7. Select Update text links and Update word index.
-
- 8. Choose OK
-
- For information, refer to Chapter 4 in The SmarText User's Guide
- for Building Electronic Documents.

-
- USING ADOBE TYPE MANAGER
-
- This release comes with Version 1.15 of Adobe Type Manager.
-
- If you have installed a previous version of ATM, you should
- install Version 1.15 along with SmarText. Any fonts you
- installed previously will be maintained with the new release.
- You can install ATM as part of the SmarText installation, or you
- can install it at a later time.
-
- To install ATM after SmarText is installed
-
- 1. Insert the ATM program disk included
- with SmarText in your disk drive.
-
- 2. From Windows Program Manager, choose File/Run.
-
- 3. Run the program install.exe on the ATM program disk.
-
- The program installs ATM Version 1.15 and all fonts included
- with this release of SmarText.
-
- To install ATM fonts only
-
- If you have installed ATM Version 2.0, you can continue to use
- that version with SmarText Release 2.0; however, you should install
- the ATM fonts included with SmarText.
-
- 1. Insert the ATM program disk included with SmarText in your
- disk drive.
-
- 2. From Windows Program Manager, start the ATM 2.0 Control
- Panel.
-
- 3. Choose Add.
-
- 4. In the Directories list box, select the drive letter that
- contains the ATM program disk and then select the \PSFONTS
- directory.
-
- The destination directory path names default to the locations
- where existing ATM fonts are installed. Do not change the
- destination path names.
-
- 5. Choose Add.
-
- The ATM Control Panel installs the fonts and displays a message
- indicating that the fonts will not be available until Windows is
- restarted.

-
- FEATURES ADDED SINCE PUBLICATION OF THE PRINTED DOCUMENTATION
-
- When you choose Edit/Search to locate text in a SmarText
- document, you can use the characters *, (, ), &, and | as part
- of the search query. You must enclose these characters in angle
- brackets <> when typing them in the text box in the Search
- dialog box.
-
- SmartIcons(TM) are now available for launching other Lotus Windows
- applications, including 1-2-3 for Windows, Ami Pro, Freelance for Windows,
- Lotus Notes, ccMail, and Lotus Write. The default installation
- directory will first be searched for the selected application.
- If the application is not found in this directory a dialog box will
- allow you to browse your disk for the correct path to that application.
-
- While the manual indicates that SmarText will only read Microsoft
- Word for Windows version 1.X files, the program will actually read
- both version 1.x and version 2.0 files.
-
-
- Two new DDE Search Commands have been added to the program since the
- manual was printed. These commands should be added to the list of
- DDE commands listed in Appendix B of the User's Guide.
-
- Search(searchString, JumpToInstance)
-
- searchString is the search string. It cannot contain
- any spaces. Multiple words can be connected via the
- Boolean AND(&), OR(|), or BUT_NOT(&~) operators.
- JumpToInstance is an optional variable having a value
- of TRUE or FALSE. If TRUE, the Search() command will
- automatically jump first hit in the text window.
- Otherwise, if FALSE or missing altogether, Search()
- will display the Search Results windows.
-
- Note that not all the forms of the search query are
- supported using DDE. You cannot search for a phrase
- such as "Civil War" as a single search term; you must
- split it into two terms (Civil&War). In addition,
- grouping of search terms is not supported. Precedence
- of Boolean operators will be from right to left.
-
-
- Next()
- The Next() command uses no arguments. It is used
- AFTER the Search(...) command to jump to the next
- hit. The JumpToInstance variable in the Search(...)
- command must have been set to TRUE.

-
- SUPPORTED SOURCE FILE FEATURES AND ATTRIBUTES
-
- SmarText supports many text features and attributes contained in
- source text files. The features supported vary by format. For
- existing SmarText documents, the new features will automatically
- be implemented when the documents are updated to Release 2.0.
-
- Following is a definition of each of these attributes and any
- special considerations unique to a particular format.
-
- LOCAL ATTRIBUTES
-
- SmarText recognizes and displays the text attributes Bold, Underline, Italic,
- and Color, unless the attributes were implemented through a paragraph style.
-
- Microsoft Word for Windows
-
- In Microsoft Word for Windows, it is possible to apply a local
- attribute to cancel an attribute applied by the paragraph style.
- For example, if a paragraph style uses bold text, the bold attribute
- can be applied to a section of the paragraph which should not be
- bold. SmarText displays the body of the paragraph as normal
- text and the section with the local attribute as bold text.
-
- LOCAL ALIGNMENT
-
- SmarText recognizes and displays text left-aligned, right-aligned, or
- centered, unless the alignment was implemented through a paragraph style.
-
- CALCULATE PAGE NUMBERS
-
- SmarText displays the page number of the document in the lower
- left corner of the screen. You can choose Edit/Go To to display a
- specific page in the document. Page numbers are based on soft and hard
- page breaks in the source document. You should make certain that page
- breaks are correct before you include the file in a SmarText document. Some
- word processors do not maintain correct page breaks unless the end of the
- document is visited or the document is repaginated.
-
- ASCII Files
- Page breaks are assumed every 54 lines, and hard page breaks
- (CTRL + L) are recognized.
-
- Ami Pro
- Ami Pro calculates page break locations when the file is
- displayed, and does not store this information with the file. There
- are two ways to calculate page breaks for Ami Pro source files.
- The default is to assume a page break after every 54 lines of
- text and to recognize any hard page breaks. If you want exact page
- breaks to be recognized without manually inserting hard page breaks
- at each location, run the Ami Pro macro STXPGBRK.SMM. This macro is
- located in your SmarText working directory, and should be run
- immediately before saving the Ami Pro file and including it in
- the SmarText document. It inserts a Power Field at the location of
- each soft page break in the document, which SmarText recognizes as
- a page break when it reads the file.
-
- READ PARAGRAPH STYLES
-
- SmarText can use paragraph styles in a source file for purposes of creating
- an outline in the electronic document. No other features of paragraph styles
- are recognized by SmarText.
-
- WordPerfect
- Unlike most word processors, WordPerfect supports more than
- one style per paragraph. For SmarText to recognize WordPerfect
- styles to create an outline, you should use only one style per
- paragraph in the WordPerfect source file.
-
- Microsoft Word
- SmarText recognizes only outline styles in Microsoft Word
- source files.
-
- USE TABLE OF CONTENTS
-
- SmarText can use the table of contents in a source file for purposes
- of creating an outline in the SmarText document. It recognizes table
- of contents headings specified in the main body of the text but not any
- modifications made manually to the output table of contents.
-
- READ TABLES
-
- SmarText reads data in source files stored in table format, and displays
- it in the SmarText document as tab-delimited. You can use Edit/Convert
- to Table Text to make tables from source files appear as tables in the
- SmarText document.
-
- Ami Pro
- SmarText will read data from tables in Ami Pro files if it is
- copied to a non-table location.
-
- HARD/SOFT RETURNS
-
- SmarText can use hard and soft line endings in a source file to
- display paragraphs in the SmarText document.
-
- ASCII
- You should specify the appropriate line ending options in the
- Include dialog box when you add an ASCII file to a new or existing
- SmarText document.

-
- CORRECTIONS TO THE DOCUMENTATION
-
- Unless otherwise noted, all page numbers refer to pages in the
- SmarText User's Guide for Building Electronic Documents.
-
- On page 1, under "Understanding the parts of an electronic
- document," the documentation does not indicate that each illustration
- displays in a separate Illustration window.
-
- On page 13, under "Understanding Source Files", the documentation
- states that only Word for Windows files prior to version 2.0 are supported
- by SmarText. In fact, both version 1.X and 2.0 files are supported.
-
- On page 19, the second note incorrectly refers to the default
- keyword list. Instead, it should be the default keyword file.
-
- On page 51, the documentation does not emphasize the
- seriousness of the second sidenote. You should take caution when you remove a heading
- because SmarText automatically removes any subheadings under that heading.
-
- On page 86, under "To remove a link," the paragraph under step
- 2 should read regular text, not normal text.
-
- On page 103, the picture of the File menu is incorrect. The
- Printer Setup menu item should follow the Print menu item.
-
-
- Appendix B: Displaying Illustrations via DDE
-
- If DDE is used on a Builder to display Computer Graphics
- Metafile or HPGL images (e.g., SHOW(ILLUSTRATION,GRAPHIC.CGM) or
- SHOW(ILLUSTRATION,GRAPHIC.PLT)), a CGM/HPGL-specific dialog box will
- be displayed prior to displaying the CGM/HPGL graphic. This dialog
- box is not displayed by Readers. In some cases, a DDE time-out
- condition may be triggered due to the long time required to respond to
- the dialog box and to render the CGM file.
-
- Appendix B: Creating Views via DDE
-
- The commands NewView, ResetView, and InsertLineIntoView are
- valid only for custom views - they do not affect a document's default
- view.
